Characterization of an Energy Source for Modeling Hypothetical Core Disruptive Accidents in Nuclear Reactors. First Interim Report. [LMFBR]

The expansion characteristics of the detonation products of a high-explosive energy source used to simulate the pressure-volume change relationships for sodium-vapor expansions during hypothetical core disruptive accidents in a Fast Test Reactor were determined experimentally. Rigid cylinder-piston experiments performed at two scales (ratio 1:3) were undertaken to determine a pressure-volume relationship as a function of source mass and expansion environment. Some of these measurements were compared with code calculations for the source.

Capsule calorimeter development report (open access)

Capsule calorimeter development report

A capsule calorimeter has been designed, fabricated, and tested that is capable of measuring the rate of thermal energy generation of a capsule source with an accuracy of plus or minus five percent over a range of 300 watts to 1,000 watts of power. Three operating modes were investigated. The rate of temperature rise mode of operation was found to be the superior operating mode based on accuracy, time cycle, and simplicity of operation. This mode of operation is recommended for use in the encapsulation plant for performing calorimetric determinations on the strontium and cesium capsules that will be produced in the plant. The heat generation data collected by calorimetry will be used for isotopic assay of the capsule sources. The capsule calorimeter is specifically designed for installation into a remotely operated hot cell.

Process for Removing Radioactive Wastes from Liquid Streams (open access)

Process for Removing Radioactive Wastes from Liquid Streams

The process is under development at Mound Laboratory to remove radioactive waste (principally plutonium-238) from process water prior to discharge of the water to the Miami river. The contaminated water, as normally received, is at a pH between 6 and 90. Under these conditions, plutonium in all its oxidation states is hydrolyzed; however, the level of the radioactive solids varies from about 50ppm down to about 50 ppb and the plutonium remains in a colloidal or subcolloidal condition. The permissible concentration for discharge to the river is about 50 parts per trillion. Pilot plant test show that 95-99% of the radioactive material is removed by adsorption on diatomaceous earth. The remainder is removed by passage through a bed of either dibasic or tribasic calcium phosphate. Ground phosphate rock is equally effective in removing the radioactive material if the flow rate is controlled to permit sufficient contact time. Parameters for optimizing the process are now under study. Future plans include application of the process to wastes from reactor fuels reprocessing.

NAL Proposal for Study of Photons and Leptons Produced in Meson-Nucleon Collisions in the Deep Scattering Region; Search for Intermediate Bosons, Heavy Leptons, Anomalous Hadronic Processes and Study of Multi-Gamma-Ray Final States (open access)

NAL Proposal for Study of Photons and Leptons Produced in Meson-Nucleon Collisions in the Deep Scattering Region; Search for Intermediate Bosons, Heavy Leptons, Anomalous Hadronic Processes and Study of Multi-Gamma-Ray Final States

We propose to observe gamma rays and leptons carrying high transverse momentum, in pairs or singles, emerging from meson-nucleon collisions at high energies. These meson-nucleon collisions probe the constituent structure of nucleons and reveal anomalous hadronic interaction processes at small distances. We will search for structure in the effective mass continuum of various (wide angle) pair combinations and in the transverse momentum spectra of singles and pairs. An experimental sensitivity corresponding to a cross section times branching ratio of {approx} 10{sup -37}-10{sup -38} cm{sup 2} is provided for the production of intermediate bosons, Lee-Wick heavy photons and sequential heavy leptons from meson-nucleon collisions. With a 300 GeV/ c meson beam the mass range up to {approx}22 GeV will be explored with good resolution. The forward (small angle) production of multi-gamma-ray final states will be studied systematically with a mass resolution of < 2%, to search for massive bosons and to reveal dynamical properties of multi-gamma-ray states.

Proposal to Study Multibody Final States in pp Collisions at 200 GeV/c Using the NAL 15-Foot Bubble Chamber

We propose to expose the NAL 15-foot hydrogen bubble chamber to 200 GeV protons. We intend to take 20,000 pictures. Multiparticle final states will be studied by measuring the momenta of all charged final state particles with the exception of a few very fast tracks where at least the charge and the emission angle of the particle will be determined. Comparison with various models for high energy multiparticle production will be made. Additionally, K{sup o} and {Lambda} production will be studied as well as {pi}{sup o} production and the correlation between {pi}{sup o} and charged particles.

A Proposal to Measure Cross Sections for pp --> pX, nX as a Function of s and M^2X Using the Internal Target Facility at NAL (open access)

A Proposal to Measure Cross Sections for pp --> pX, nX as a Function of s and M^2X Using the Internal Target Facility at NAL

A simple counter experiment is proposed to investigate the s and s/M{sup 2} dependence of the invariant cross section for the single particle inclusive reactions pp {yields} pX and pp {yields} nX in a limited region of phase space. 4 < s/M{sup 2} < 20, 40 < s < s{sub max}, 0.1 < |t| < 0.6 near the kinematic limit. The neutron reaction will be studied directly, using a hydrogen jet, and also by measuring the difference between pp {yields} pX and pD {yields} pX using a deuterium jet. The latter will provide information on the line reversed reaction pn {yields} pX. The proposed experiment will use the internal target and aims to provide information on specific theoretical issues in a very short time interval. These issues are: (1) relatively importance of PPP and PPR couplings in the triple Regge framework; and (2) diffractive versus triple Regge approaches to the understanding of single particle inclusive reactions.
