Zirconium hydride formation in Hanford production reactor process tubes
Examination of Zircaloy-2 process tubes from Hanford Production Reactors has revealed extensive zirconium hydride formation. In general, attack is limited to the downstream portions of tubes where aluminum spacers are located. Most of the hydride platelets are contained in a case or layer on the inner surface of the tube. It is not unusual to find cases 0.004 to 0.005 in. thick. Analyses of the 0.037 in. wall tubes with such cases intact often reveal hydrogen concentrations greater than 1000 ppM. Investigation indicates that the hydriding is the result of galvanic contact between aluminum and Zircaloy-2. The galvanic couple (contact between dissimilar metals in the presence of reactor cooling water which serves as the electrolyte) results in the cathodic charging of hydrogen into the Zircaloy.

Reaction matrix in nuclear shell theory
Lectures are given in which the nuclear shell model is discussed as a link between the properties of complex nuclei and the free-nucleon interaction. A version of the shell model is derived from nuclear many-body theory, and also this version is compared and contrasted with phenomenological shell theory. Attention is focused on oxygen-18 and fluorine-18. 76 references. (JFP)

Neurospora experiment P-1037. Quarterly progress report to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, October 1--December 15, 1966
The main values of the 302 gantry exercise were to check the preparation of the Neurospora experiment and the spacecraft loading procedure under timed conditions and to provide final assurance that necessary operations can be completed with appropriate inspection in the allotted time. Because of the brief time interval between the 302 Gantry Exercise and the scheduled Biosatellite A flight, no attempt was made to assay for forward-mutation frequecies; however, biocompatibility tests were performed on the 302 hardware by plating conidia from a number of the modules in the usual fashion to assay survival. The average heteokaryotic conidial survival was 82.6%, which is sufficiently high for use of the conidia in a forward-mutation experiment. Calibration of thermoluminescent dosimeters was carried out using a /sup 85/Sr ..gamma.. source.

Thermal stability of zirconia-s and thoria-base fuels (LWBR Development Program)
Vapor densities and/or dissociation pressures of UO/sub 2/, ThO/sub 2/, ZrO/sub 2/, ThO/sub 2/-8 and -20 wt % UO/sub 2/, and ZrO/sub 2/-20 and -50 wt % UO/sub 2/ were obtained in the range from 2000 to 3000/sup 0/K by the transpiration technique. The UO/sub 2/-ZrO/sub 2/ system exhibited marked positive deviation from ideality, indicative of a strong tendency toward immiscibility. The UO/sub 2/-ThO/sub 2/ system was found to behave almost ideally. On the basis of the vapor pressures of UO/sub 2/ and of ThO/sub 2/ and the activity values it would be expected that compositions containing 1 mole % or more of UO/sub 2/ would volatilize by preferentially losing UO/sub 2/. A composition containing slightly less than 1 mole % UO/sub 2/ should prove to be the congruently subliming composition. O/sub 2/-dissociation pressures were determined for stoichiometric UO/sub 2/ and for a composition on either side of the stoichiometric one. At 2360/sup 0/K, UO/sub 2.03 +- 0.01/, UO/sub 2.00 +- 0.01/, and UO/sub 1.97 +- 0.01/ exhibited O/sub 2/-dissociation pressures of 1 x 10/sup -7/, 4.3 x 10/sup -10/, and 3 x 10/sup -12/ atm, respectively. From determinations of vapor density and measurements of O/sub 2/ pressure, pressure-temperature-composition relations …

Waste Management Technical Manual
This Manual has been prepared to provide a documented compendium of the technical bases and general physical features of Isochem Incorporated`s Waste Management Program. The manual is intended to be used as a means of training and as a reference handbook for use by personnel responsible for executing the Waste Management Program. The material in this manual was assembled by members of Isochem`s Chemical Processing Division, Battelle Northwest Laboratory, and Hanford Engineering Services between September 1965 and March 1967. The manual is divided into the following parts: Introduction, contains a summary of the overall Waste Management Program. It is written to provide the reader with a synoptic view and as an aid in understanding the subsequent parts; Feed Material, contains detailed discussion of the type and sources of feed material used in the Waste Management Program, including a chapter on nuclear reactions and the formation of fission products; Waste Fractionization Plant Processing, contains detailed discussions of the processes used in the Waste Fractionization Plant with supporting data and documentation of the technology employed; Waste Fractionization Plant Product and Waste Effluent Handling, contains detailed discussions of the methods of handling the product and waste material generated by the Waste Fractionization Plant; …
