The electrolytic solvent characteristics of liquid nitrosyl chloride and general consideration of the factors affecting suitability of a system for isotope separation suggest that exchange reactions of NOCl might provide an interesting and useful means for the separation of the stable isotopes of nitrogen or of chlorine, or of both in a simultaneous process. Vibrational frequencies of isotope substituted NOCl molecules are calculated and used to estimate equilibrium constants for exchange of nitrosyl chloride with nitric oxide and with chlorine. Provisional experimental values of the equilibrium constants are given. (auth)

The results of two-dimensional (r,z) multigroup calculations of an experimental low-power reactor (PPA19) are described. Comparison is made between calculated results and experimental measurements of reactivity, power distribution, and sodium activation. Generally good agreement is observed between calculation and experiment. This calculation was performed in 1954 and represents the first application of Roe's twodimensional multigroup formulation to the analysis of an operating critical assembly. The over-all objective of such calculations is to ascertain the accuracy of two-dimensional multigroup methods in order to facilitate their application to future problems in reactor design. (auth)

The fission cross section of Pu/sup 240/ was determimed from Pu/sup 240/U/sup 235/ ratio for neutron energies between threshold and 8.1 Mev. U/sup 235/ cross section values were essentially those given in a recent compilation in ''Progress in Nuclear Energy.'' The technique used was to mount the two foils back-to-back in a double ionization chamber and to irradiate them in a neutron flux of variable energy. (A.C.)

Work on the present relativistic electron bunching accelerator (S-band rebatron) is concerned with improving the electron bunching, current and beam focusing, and the design of a portable prototype system. Most of the parts for this new machine were fabricated and tested and the construction initiated. A photograph showing the present stage of construction is given. Since an S-band rebatron cannot be scaled directly to X-band, a lower voltage Xband rebatron, followed by a short section of a linear accelerator could solve the problera. An Electronics Associates analog computer was received and is being programmed to explore the design problems. The numerical work of evaluating the TM and TE modes of teflon dielectric cavities is largely completed. New ideas and further modifications are being tried in Si crystal harmonic multipliers for use as sources for testing components. The new klystrons now being used permit driving the crystals harder, and hence improve the harmonic power. (For preceding period see AECU-3535.) (M.H.R.)

The feasibility of a 150 Mwe aqueous homogeneous nuclear power plant was investigated by a joint study team of the Nuclear Power Group and The Babcock & Wilcox Company. In this concept, the reactor is a single-fluid two-region design in which the fuel solution circulates through the thoria pellet blanket as the coolant. Componeats and plant arrangement were designed to provide maximum overhead accessibility for maintenance. All components in contact with reactor fuel at high pressure are themselves enclosed in close-fitting high-pressure containment envelopes. (auth)
