Alpha Ferric Oxide: Low Temperature Heat Capacity and Thermodynamic Functions
ABS>The heat capacity of synthetic alpha ferric oxide was determined at 5 to 350 K. The experimental technique is described, and the heat capacity and molal thermodyamic functions are tabulated. The heat capacity vs. temperature is shown graphically. (J.R.D.)

ANALYSIS OF PROMPT EXCURSIONS IN SIMPLE SYSTEMS
A calculation, coded for a fast computer, is discussed that can fairly accurately match the experimental resuIts obtained from the LASL Lady Godiva prompt burst program. In particular, the code can predict the reactivity where the burst yield deviates from a linear dependence on reactivity and commences to rise much more rapidly. The burst width and maximum rates can be predictcd with reasonable accuracy. The calculation is applied to other simple systems, with the result that there appear to be general rules that one can use to relate the bursts of thcse systems. The calculation can predict what fraction of the energy of the system is converted into kinetic energy. It appears that step-function increases of reactivity of about 1O cents or less in homogeneous metal systems develop only a trivial explosive energy. The method was extended to hypothetical accidents in very idealized reactors. Two general models of reactor cores were considered. These are (1) a core of low density in which the characteristic o a threshold is important, and (2) a model in which the spherical shells are alternately normal density and void. The numbers quoted should be regarded only as establishing upper and lower limits. (auth)

Chemical Effects of Nuclear Transformations and Their Use in Making Labeled Compounds
The chemical effects of nuclear transformations can be utilized to introduce the radioactive atoms produced into chemical species useful for tracer studies. Gas chromatography offers a means of separating the tagged compounds with high specific activity. A chromatographic apparatus for separating and identifying labeled compounds is described. Comparisons are made of this with other labeling techniques. (auth)

Corrosion of Materials in the Presence of Fluorine at Elevated Temperatures
A study of the corrosion of various metallic and ceramic materials by gaseous fluorine at elevated temperatures (400-750°C) has been made. This work was initiated to aid in the selection of matierals of construction for the Fluoride Volatility Process applied to irradiated plutonium-uranium alloys. The data obtained in this investigation indiciated nickel and Monel were suitable materials for use in a fluorine atmosphere at temperatures up to 550°C.

Debye-Huckel, Thomas-Fermi Theory of Plasmas and Liquid Metals: Numerical Solution
A Debye-Huckel-type theory is described for an assembly of completely ionized atoms, the nuclei being treated classically and the electrons by the Thomas-Fermi method. The thermodynamic functions are derived by considering the Debye chnrging process, and the virial theorem is shown to hold. Numerical results are given for hydrogen and iron near normal solid densities, and are probably accurate only at high temperatures (kT > 5 ev for hydrogen and kT> 100 ev for iron). (auth)

GRAPHITE-MODERATED, GRAPHITE-REFLECTED CRITICAL ASSEMBLIES
Graphite-moderated, graphite reflected critical assemblies have been set up in the LASL Honeycomb remotely controlled machine. lnformation has been obtained on the critical masses of systems having C/Oy ratios of 6650 and 4093. A third system at a smaller ratio is planned. The reactivity contribution of channels through the core and reflector was determined. (auth)

THE HRT REFRIGERATING SYSTEM
The HRT refrigeration system was designed to use Freon-11 (CCI3F) as the refrigerant material in the secondary loop. A Van de Graaff irradiation of this material indicated that serious corrosion problems were probable if Freon were used in the proposed metal system. A survey was made of candidate refrigerants, and Amsco 125-82 and triethyl phosphate were selected for irradiation and physical-property determinations. (W.L.H.)

Impact Effect of Fragments Striking Structural Elements
Equations were developed which permit a designer to evaluate the impact effect of a missile striking a structural element at high velocity. Examples of the use of the equations in calculations and comparisons of the relative effect of penetration on the equivalent static design load are included. Application to calculations of structural containnent for nuclear power plants is discussed briefly. (C. H.)

Influence of Radiation Upon Corrosion and Surface Reactions of Metals and Alloys
A discussion of various factors in corrosion of irradiated metallic surfaces is presented. The usual mechanisms of metallic corrosion, such as direct chemi-cal reactions, direct solution (mass transfer), and electrochemical mechanisms, are considered in relation to the effects of light and x rays. In addition, corrosion of reactor materials in aqueous materials is considered. The effect of irradiation on gas -solid reactions is discussed as well as proton irradiation effects on surface reactions. Several tables and graphs are included. (J.R.D.)
