This document details activities of the irradiation processing department during the month of September 1956. A general summary is included at the start of the report, after which the report is divided into the following sections: research and engineering operations; production and reactor operations; facilities engineering operation; employee relations operations; and financial operation.

This report describes travel to Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory September 17, and 19, ALOO and ACF Industries, Inc. At Los Alamos the principal subjects discussed were reservoir design, and reservoir shipping specifications. In Albuquerque a meeting was held with Albuquerque Operations Office personnel to discuss design and procurement of shipping containers, followed by discussions with ACF of reservoir fabrication and testing.

Included is a summary of the material presented at the Sheath meeting at Chalk River on Sept. 25--26, 1956. Information is included on cladding plates, end plugs for plates, electroplating techniques, equipment to extrusion clad full length plates at SRL, progress on extrusion cladding the inside of tubes, and a program for future work on extrusion cladding.

This historic report is on letter which details the research into atmospheric dispersion of fissioviable materials in the event of a reactor accident at Savannah River Plant. Graphs are included.

The September, 1956 monthly report for the Chemical Processing Department of Hanford Atomic Products Operation includes information regarding research and engineering efforts with respect to the Purex and Redox process technology. The purpose of this report is to present observations, developed jointly with Purex Technology Operation, which support the ``foam`` theory for high dissolver tower differential pressure, and to recommend the installation of test jets in a dissolver jumper which should destroy dissolver foam and thereby improve overall dissolver performance.

An investigation of the interactions between 300-Mev neutrons and xenon was made by means of a cloud chamber in a pulsed magnetic field of 21,700 gauss placed in the neutron beam of the 184-inch Berkeley cyclotron. Eighty-seven negative pion events and 257 other stars were analyzed. In addition an experimental check was made on the energy of the incoming neutrons. Classification, identification, and angular and energy distributions of prongs associated with all events are presented. Interpretations of results are given.

Progress is reported in these areas: fabrication of Ni-Mo base alloys; tensile tests; oxidation studies; dynamic corrosion studies; production of commercial size heats of Ni-Mo base alloys; brazing of alloys; and fabrication of thermal convection loops.

The effect of solvents and temperature on the optical absorption spectrum of a number of substituted aromatic disulfides is reported. The problems offered by the disulfide link and the exchange reactions between disulfides, and between disulfides and thiols, are receiving increasing attention. Recently the base-catalyzed exchange between various alkyl disulfides and the corresponding thiols was studied by means of a radioactive-tracer technique. Our initial purpose was to extend these investigations to a large number of compounds in a variety of experimental conditions using a spectrophotometric technique that, if applicable, would have been incomparably faster.

A tester was developed to detect nonbonded areas between the cladding and the core of hollow slugs. These slugs are one inch in diameter and eight inches long, and have a 3/8 inch axial hole. The tester employs an ultrasonic detector previously developed at the Savannah River Laboratory. A transducer 5/ 16 inch in diameter was developed to pass down the inside of the slug and a mechanical feeder was constructed to provide an automatic inspection cycle. (auth)
