Conceptual Design of a Nuclear Ram Jet-Rocket Missile

The conceptual design of a nuclear ram jet-rocket missile is preserved. This missile is a modified, scaled-up AC-210 nuclear ram jet carrying ammonia in the space enclosed by the spike and inlet diffuser. The payload may be a 10,000 pound thermonuclear weapon or equivalent weight of reconnaissance equipment plus local shielding as in the AC-210 missile. The payload for a missile of body size equivalent to the AC-210 will be reduced by the weight of ammonia.

Nuclear power plant 5,000 to 10,000 kilowatts

The purpose of this proposal is to present a suggested program for the development of an Aqueous Homogeneous Reactor Power Plant for the production of power in the 5000 to 10,000 kilowatt range under the terms of the Atomic Energy Commission's invitation of September 21, 1955. It envisions a research and development program prior to finalizing fabricating commitments of full scale components for the purpose of proving mechanical and hydraulic operating and chemical processing feasibility with the expectation that such preliminary effort will assure the contruction of the reactor at the lowest cost and successful operation at the earliest date. It proposes the construction of a reactor for an eventual net electrical output of ten megawatts but initially in conjunction with a five megawatt turbo-generating unit. This unit would be constructed at the site of the existing Hersey diesel generating plant of the Wolverine Electric Cooperative approximately ten miles north of Big Rapids, Michigan.

At about 6:30 a.m. one of the two Process Operators regularly stationed at 233-S was performing routine work in the Control Room, heard a nearby Poppy alpha detector breaking down.'' He checked and found the instrument appeared to be in operating condition as it would respond to a high level source. Further checking indicated that he was contaminated and that nearby horizontal surfaces were contaminated. This information was phoned to the Shift Supervisor who told the Operator that he would be right out and to throw a pair of shoe covers out the door. On arriving, the Supervisor donned the shoe covers and then quickly checked the Poppy response and confirmed the report of the Operator. Both men then left the building. Just outside they met the other Process Operator assigned to 233-S, returning from the lunchroom. The second Operator was handed a smear, previously taken and checked by the Supervisor, and told to check it on a Poppy in the load-out-room, a room adjacent to where the contamination was originally found. When the Supervisor heard the load-out-room Poppy break down as the smear was checked he instructed both Operators to stand by just outside the building while he went …

Radiation control standards and procedures

This manual contains the Radiation Control Standards'' and Radiation Control Procedures'' at Hanford Operations which have been established to provide the necessary control radiation exposures within Irradiation Processing Department. Provision is also made for including, in the form of Bulletins'', other radiological information of general interest to IPD personnel. The purpose of the standards is to establish firm radiological limits within which the Irradiation Processing Department will operate, and to outline our radiation control program in sufficient detail to insure uniform and consistent application throughout all IPD facilities. Radiation Control Procedures are intended to prescribe the best method of accomplishing an objective within the limitations of the Radiation Control Standards. A procedure may be changed at any time provided the suggested changes is generally agreeable to management involved, and is consistent with department policies and the Radiation Control Standards.

200 Area waste storage study

As a part of the five year budget study requested by HOO-AEC, a study of separations waste storage requirements for this period was made. This study took into consideration the variant estimates of amount of irradiated uranium to be processed, and the goals in the waste reduction research and development program. The conclusions of this study were at variance, to some extent, with prior studies. Interest has been expressed in publication of this study to permit independent assessment of its bases and assumptions.

Radioactive contamination in liquid wastes discharged to ground at separations facilities through June 1956

This document summarizes the amounts of radioactive contamination discharged to the ground from separation facilities through June 1956. Detailed data for individual disposal sites is presented on a month to month basis for the period July 1955 through June 1956. The major disposal sites in separation facilities, total volume of waste discharged at each location, and the gross amounts of plutonium and fission products discharged to the ground since startup are listed. This same data are presented on a month to month basis and also include information on the source of the waste stream and the settling facility used. Isotopic data are included for all disposal sites from which the waste was analyzed for specific contaminants. Estimates of contamination and volumes discharged to the swamps are also included.

Interim report, cocked-slug, flush-charging relations for C-Pile conditions

Pile Engineering Sub-Section has been investigating the causes and effects of cocked slugs in process tubes for the past year because they are suspected to be the cause for some slug ruptures. In Project CG-642 - Continuous Charge-Discharge Equipment - C Reactor it is proposed that slugs be flush charged into the process tubes. This document reports the effect of flush charging slugs on their tendency to cock as discovered in laboratory tests.

The storage and handling of J-slugs (open access)

The storage and handling of J-slugs

The nuclear safety specifications (1) for handling J-slugs have previously been reviewed. These specifications provided information for the storage of loaded 100-hole shipping containers and loaded 66-hole wood cart pallets in certain arrays. Storage of J-slugs in J-Material Crates conforming to Drawing No. H-3-6217 had not been reviewed for the previous specifications. It has become desirable to provide specifications for J-slug storage in these crates as well as make additions to the present specifications on the storage of these enriched slugs in shipping containers and pallets. The results of this study pertaining to arrays of J-slugs in shipping containers and pallets will be incorporated as an addition to the present specifications for handling J-slugs.

Reactor gas loss analysis

Reactor gas costs have increased substantially each year since 1952 when the total cost was $108,000. In 1953, 1954, and 1955 the gross annual cost of reactor gas was $126,000, $348,000 and $606,000 respectively and are reported in Figure 1. These continued increases in reactor gas costs indicate the need for an analysis of gas usage and formulation of a program to reduce gas consumption. To provide basic information for such a program, a critical review has been made of the reaction gas system and gas consumption figures for the past four years.

Final report -- PT-105-548-A, The effect of masonite burnout on shield attenuation properties

In a previous study it was determined experimentally that heat deterioration, or burnout, of the shield masonite is more severe than radiation damage under existing and proposed operating conditions. Higher shield temperatures, which are expected to result from increased power levels, fringe enrichment, and higher graphite temperatures, will markedly increase the rate at which the masonite burns out. The laminated iron-masonite biological shield will lose, as a result of burnout, the hydrogen and oxygen necessary to attenuate and moderate neutrons. The purpose of this production test has been to obtain experimental data from which future shield leakage rates could be estimated. The attenuation data reported here were obtained in the DR pile bulk shield facility from experiments using various void spacings to simulate burnout conditions. From these data it was hoped to determine (1) the resultant attenuation properties of the shields, and (2) the exposure rates due to radiation penetrating the shield.

It is the purpose of the Fuel Element Technical Manual to Provide a single document describing the fabrication processes used in the manufacture of the fuel element as well as the technical bases for these processes. The manual will be instrumental in the indoctrination of personnel new to the field and will provide a single data reference for all personnel involved in the design or manufacture of the fuel element. The material contained in this manual was assembled by members of the Engineering Department and the Manufacturing Department at the Hanford Atomic Products Operation between the dates October, 1955 and June, 1956. Production test number 105-634-A in-pile cocked slug tests

Slug ruptures characterized by intergranular corrosion failure of the aluminum can (Hot Spot Ruptures) have been a major cause for loss of reactor production, particularly during the past year. Although the cause for these failures is not definitely known, it is suspected that fuel elements when cocked in the process tube will sufficiently distort the neutron flux and the heat transfer characteristics in a localized area that very high local temperatures will exist and the corrosion rate of the aluminum can in these areas will be accelerated. It is the purpose of this test to introduce slugs that are known to be cocked and compare their resistance to rupture with slugs that are known to be uncocked when initially charged.

In-pile defilming of process tubes

To reduce manpower burn-out rates resulting from contamination on tools and equipment which are used to remove process tubes, a method for decontaminating, evaluated. The referenced document reported the results of a small scale test designed to remove film from inside the process tube prior to removal of the tube from the reactor. A more conclusive test was also outlined. The purpose of this document is to report the results of the larger scale test.
