The evolution of iodine during metal dissolution
During the dissolution in nitric acid of uranium metal which has been irradiated in a pile, radio-iodine (8.0 day) and radio-xenon (5.3 day) are liberated along with the oxides of nitrogen. Since in the plant these gases are discharged into the atmosphere, the presence of the activities (particularly radio-iodine because of its greater chemical reactivity) presents a physiological hazard. As a consequence, the cooling period (that is, the time between the discharge of the metal from the pile and the dissolution of the metal in nitric acid for the extraction of the product) should be sufficiently long so that the activities will have decreased through decay to the point where their concentrations in the atmosphere will not exceed 2.5 {times} 10{sup {minus}13} curies/cc* and 5 {times} 10{sup {minus}11} curies/cc* for radio-iodine and radio-xenon, respectively. A study was made of the existing information concerning the liberation of iodine and xenon during the dissolution of the metal and the information was summarized in a memorandum. At that time it was apparent that radio-iodine would present the greater hazard, and that very little was known about the factors governing the liberation of iodine during the metal dissolution. For this reason, an investigation of …

Interim report No. 2 on Production Test No. 105-17-P, Laboratory evaluation of proposed lubricants
The lubricant (Calel A-60) used to reduce pushing forces when discharging slugs from pile tubes forms a cloudy emulsion with water. During the initial period of operation at 100 B and D areas, spillage of lubricant during discharge produced so much cloudiness in the basin water that it interfered with sorting operations. An investigation was started to see if a lubricant could be found that would effectively lubricate tubes during discharge and which would form optically clear systems when mixed with water. This report presents the data on a number of lubricants which were suggested for test.

Xenon and iodine concentrations in the environs of the T and B Plant
A report of seven stack emissions of I-131 at the T and B plants, detailing the relationship between cooling times and dilution factors for the safe emission of the isotope. From the stack sampling, personal exposure limits for an eight and nine hour day are calculated. The effect of atmospheric conditions appears to be negligible, although periods of atmospheric stagnation may have an effect on the I-131 concentration. Environmental effects are minimized by increasing the cooling times of the isotope charge. Downdrafts near the stack emissions during low dilution increase the radiation level, but do not pose any inhalation hazard.

100-F area unit purge, May 3, 1945
This report discusses the pressure drop on the 100-F unit, as measured on the eight pressure drop tubes, which had increased to 24 lbs./in.{sup 2} above base by May 2. The unit was shut down on May 3 to purge with 50 ppm solids for 1.1 hr. and to take care of necessary maintenance work.

Beta M2 Slit Support
A new G slit support utilizing the standard G carbon now in use in all Beta production buildings was tested over approximately four months in the Pilot Plant with very successful results. A considerable saving has been made both in servicing time and in costs. The equipment has proved to be the best of any tried from the standpoint of run terminations due to alignment difficulties.
