Monsanto Chemical Company, Unit 3 abstracts of progress reports, August 16--31, 1945: Summary of work to date on volatile neutron source

It was proposed to prepare a volatile polonium compound which could be used alone or with another gaseous compound as a neutron source. The objective was to obtain a neutron source which would give off few neutrons in the expanded state, but when condensed would act substantially as a thick target and emit perhaps ten times as many neutrons. Originally, polonium hexafluoride was suggested; with such compound the fluorine atoms would constitute the target. the predicted boiling point of polonium hexafluoride is about -40 {degrees}C. There was reason to believe, however, that lower relatively non-volatile fluorides would be formed rather than the hexafluoride. Polonium alkyls were therefore proposed as alternatives. The predicted boiling point of Po(CH{sub 3}){sub 2} is about 110 {degrees}C. This compound in itself would probably not be suitable as a target material but it could be mixed with other gases such as carbon tetrafluoride, boron trifluoride, etc., as targets. As a longer range possibility, Po(CF{sub 3}){sub 2} was also suggested. This compound would act as its own target and would moreover have the same F/Po ratio as PoF{sub 6}; its boiling point could be expected to be 30{degrees} - 60 {degrees} lower than that of polonium dimethyl. …

Monthly, 100 Area technical activities report, Physics, 10-25-45--May 1947

Two events of broad significance occurred in the 100B Area during this report period. These are the discovery of pimpled slugs in high concentration tubes discharged on 10-30-45 and the discovery of leaking VSR thimbles on 11-15-45. Although more extensive reports of these occurrences will be made elsewhere, these events have aspects of significance to physics and basic data will be given in this report for record purposes.

PERFORMANCE OF CHIPPED MAGNESIUM VERSUS HAMMERMILLED MAGNESIUM IN THE BOMB REDUCTION OF TETRAFLUORIDE. PART I

The O. Hommel Company, of Carnegie, Penna., supplied Mallinckrodt Chemical Works with three types of Mg chips or powder (Type 84, 85B, and 87B) formed by machining Mg ingots. This material was tested and compared with standard New England Lime Mg in a series of reduction runs. A new type of powder (Type 93) developed by the O. Hommel Company during the course of the first experiment was also sert to Mallinckrodt Chemical Works foi preliminary testing. As this was superior to the other tynes tested, a large batch was made up and sent to both Electro Metallurgical Company and Mallinckrodt Chemical Works in order to confirm the preliminary results obtained by Mallinckrodt Chemical Works alone. Pile power level

A memorandum prepared by the Technical Department discussing the technical considerations involved in raising Pile power above the present level of 280 M.W. was discussed. A meeting attended by W. O. Simon, B. H. Mackey, L. Squires, H. Worthington, C. N. Gross, W. E. Jordan and M. H. Smith. The details of this memorandum were reviewed and the plan proposed for operation of the piles subsequent to August 1, 1945 is discussed in this report.

Procedure for improving temperature distribution via rods and columns -- B Pile (open access)

Procedure for improving temperature distribution via rods and columns -- B Pile

Since the development of relationships between rod changes and temperature shifts, the temperature distribution of the B Pile has been improved as much as possible by shifting the rods. Certain unbalances have been found which can only be removed by improvement of the poison pattern. At present the maximum imperfection in the B Pile is 5% diagonal quadrupole unbalance. An estimate of the poison pattern needed to correct these imperfections is given herein. This poison pattern has been calculated as an example of application of the principles and is not intended as a recommendation.
