Evaluation of ex-reactor loading event on high-fluence EBR-II control-rod thimble 5E3
A Type 304 stainless steel EBR-II control-rod thimble (CRT 5E3) with high fluence was damaged while undergoing dimensional evaluation. The damage, which occurred when the thimble was inadvertently loaded in a bending mode, consisted of rather localized but extensive fracture. An elastic stress analysis of the bending mode was done on the thimble, using semimembrane shell theory. The analysis disclosed several important aspects that the simpler and more commonly employed techniques do not disclose. The hoop stress was found to be the most probable to initiate failure in that crack initiation would most likely result from localized yielding from the hoop stress. Structural assessment of the failure with the aid of scanning electron, transmission electron, and optical microscopy qualitatively supported the stress analysis in that the failure was associated with localized yielding and was accompanied by some, but limited, ductility. There was no evidence that a premature failure occurred (e.g., a failure at stresses below the yield stress of the material and which might be associated with grain-boundary embrittlement). (auth)

Study of Signal Shaping and Energy Repsonse of Large NaI(Tl) Spectrometers for Application at NAL
Signal shaping properties are demonstrated with a large NaI(Tl) crystal assembly, 20 in. thick and 30 in. in diameter. Correlated energy resolution responses are shown for total energy absorption in the crystal from 580 MeV electrons. Light collection optics by diffuse reflection most likely determined the 10% to 90% rise-time of signals of 80 nsec, connected with the transit time of trapped light, before it reaches a photocathode surface. Using a signal clipping technique, the trailing edge of pulses are shaped to have base-lines entirely restored to zero. Providing good energy resolution, signals are obtained which are shaped to have 200 nsec full-width at base. The energy resolution responses from signal pulse-height measurement are demonstrated. Further improvements to obtain shorter pulse-widths are discussed and the capability of these crystals to handle several types of background is shown.

During the quarter covered (October 15, 1972 to February 15, 1973), additional models of the nuclear engine were implanted in calves to evaluate the chronic effects of weight and size. Further characterization of the bench test heart pump was performed, The effect of pump rate on cardiac output was evaluated. The effect of outflow (anterial) pressure on cardiac output was evaluated. Bjork- Shiley valves with stainless steel disks and pyrolitic carbon disks were tested and the effect of cardiac output evaluated. A design of a quick connect system to enable rapid connection of the atrial cuffs and anterial graphs to the blood pump was undertaken. Molds of the implantable version of the ventricles were completed, and construction techniques and evaluation of the ventricles is now in progress. A protocol for the implantation of the pump mechanism into calves for testing is under consideration. (auth)
