1964 computer run on a laser-imploded capsule

WAZER Alchemy 7b (WA-7b) is a WAZER calculation of a laser-driven micro-implosion of a spherical capsule consisting of a thin gold pusher surrounded by a thick (frozen) deuterium ablator. The properties of the target capsule and the shape of the laser pulse used to irradiate it are described.

Calculation of resonance self shielding in $sup 235$U (open access)

Calculation of resonance self shielding in $sup 235$U

Analytic and Monte Carlo calculations of the Bramblett- Czirr /sup 235/U transmission experiment STANuc!. Sci. Eng. 35, 350-357 (1969)! were performed. The numbcr of fissions from the uncollided flux could be calculated as a function of depth. The results of experiment and Monte Carlo calculations are tabulated and plotted; fission and total cross sections for /sup 235/U are shown. In view of the agreement between the analytic and Monte Carlo calculations, it appeared that the ENDF/B-III cross sections were inadequate to calculate the Czirr-- Bramblett experiment. Encapsulation of high-purity germanium detectors (open access)

Encapsulation of high-purity germanium detectors

The encapsulation of high-purity germnium detectors is very desirable in order to increase their versatility and reliability. However, rapid and extensive degradation is seen for all detectors made from detector grade crystals which are encapsulated in a simple vacuum. Extensive studies have shown that the cause of this degradation is hydrogen adsorption on the detector surface. There it causes the formation of a strong p/sup +/ inversion layer which in turn shunts the detector junction. Reliable encapsulation is shown to be achievable by the use of hydrogen-free germanium crystals. (auth)

Operational experience with the multipass 16-disc long path laser system

A brief summary is given of the operational and maintenance requirements for the Livermore long path'' laser system--the first short pulse neodymium ( lambda = 1.06 mu m) glass disc laser system. It is being issued at this time because the system is presently scheduled to be shut down at the end of the calendar year 1973. If the hardware is then put on the surplus equipment list, it would be useful for the future owner to have such information. (auth)

Free-energy approach to computing dynamic phase change in materials (open access)

Free-energy approach to computing dynamic phase change in materials

The free energy approach to calculating dynamic phase change is described. It is assumed that the driving force for the transition is the difference in the Gibbs free energy for the phases present in the material. To demonstrate the validity of the theory, the model is applied to delta -phase plutonium. (auth)

Mechanical Properties of Nugget Sandstone (open access)

Mechanical Properties of Nugget Sandstone

The mechanical properties of Nugget sandstone have been determined from a number of independent measurements at pressures up to 30 kbar. Pressure- volume, strength, uniaxial stress, and uniaxial strain tests yield the failure surface and effective moduli as a function of stress state, i.e., mean pressure and shear stress. Acoustic velocity determinations provide the effective moduli for low-amplitude dynamic waves. At atmospheric pressure the initial effective bulk modulus in tests with applied differential stresses (~40 kbar) differs from that determined hydrostatically (23 kbar). This and a large pressure derivative of the shear modulus at low pressure are believed to be due to an abundance of cracks with low aspect ratios. The initial effective shear modulus of about 55 kbar increases rapidly with the closing of cracks. At 1 kbar confining pressure, a shear modulus of about l20 kbar is determined in both uniaxial stress and uniaxial strain experiments. The rock has an ultimate strength comparable to granite (1.2 kbar unconfined) and exhibits brittle behavior at failure to the highest mean pressure studied (14 kbar). Failure is preceded by dilatant behavior. (auth)

Temporal observations of the lambda5303 emission line profile during the 74 minute totality from the Concorde SST at the 30 June 1973 total solar eclipse: preliminary intensity variations above an active region (open access)

Temporal observations of the lambda5303 emission line profile during the 74 minute totality from the Concorde SST at the 30 June 1973 total solar eclipse: preliminary intensity variations above an active region

From international astronomical union symposium on coronal disturbances; Surfers Paradise, Australia (3 Sep 1973). Apparatus was designed for installation on the Concorde SST to provide high resolution emission line profiles at the June 30, 1973 total solar eclipse. A prime objective was to obtain profiles that could be used to detect the coronal response to the 5 min periodicities observed in the solar photosphere. Stability of the sky scattered light, drastic reduction of seeing effects enhanced the value of the exceptional opportunity. Preliminary results are discussed for a single region on the limb, above an active sunspot group. (auth)

Recovery of nitric acid from raffinate and condensate solutions by steam distillation/pyrohydrolysis and fractional distillation in a glass column (open access)

Recovery of nitric acid from raffinate and condensate solutions by steam distillation/pyrohydrolysis and fractional distillation in a glass column

Potential processes for the pilot-plant-scale purification and concentration of nitric acid condensate and raffinate solutions were studied. As a result, a process was developed where condensates were continuously purified by an aluminum nitratecalcium nitrate trap to reduce 200 to 300-ppM fluoride concentrations to <1 ppM. Next, the condensates were fed to an all-glass rectification column to concentrate nitric acid to 14 molar and to reduce 200 10 400-ppM chloride concentrations to <1 ppM. Finally, raffinates were steam distilled and pyrohydrolyzed to recover >90% of the nitrates as nitric acid. (auth)

Computer simulation studies of parabolic interpolation circuitry (open access)

Computer simulation studies of parabolic interpolation circuitry

A computer-simulation study of parabolic interpolation circuitry for machine tool controllers was completed. Results showed that a tool center can be moved along any parabolic arc to within any realistic tolerance. Circuit design requirements were determined and input data required by the parabolic interpolators were defined. Simulation results showed that tool motion along a pronounced parabolic path would stay within a 1/2-microinch tolerance. An application of the parabolic interpolation toward reducing the large input data volumes required by conventional numerical controllers was achieved. (auth)

Review of Soviet data on the peaceful uses of nuclear explosions (open access)

Review of Soviet data on the peaceful uses of nuclear explosions

Over the last several years through a series of international meetings sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and a number of publications, the Soviet union has disclosed that they have a very active program for developing peaceful uses of nuclear explosions (PNE) in their rational economy. They have described the results of 14 experimental and industrial explosions designed to develop nine different applications in the petroleum, gas, and minerals industries as well as for water resources development. However, when one considers large number of large unidentified seismic events that have been reported over the last seven years in areas of the Soviet Union outside the normal nuclear-weapon test areas, it is obvious that they have an even more active program than they have publicly described, one that must be approaching a routine industrial technology in some areas. The PNE program that the Soviets have publicly discussed in various reports and at various meetings is summarized and, when appropriate, compared to data from the US Plowshare Program. (auth)
