Proposal to process RTNS-II accelerator targets for LLL (open access)

Proposal to process RTNS-II accelerator targets for LLL

This proposal is submitted in response to a programmatic need at LLL for a supplier of 50-cm targets (tritided) for the new RTNS-II facility. Previous letters of inquiry to Mound also delineate a need for recovery of tritium from expended RTNS-II targets. As explained in this proposal, the tritided target manufacturing and tritium recovery can be accomplished in an efficient and timely manner at Mound Facility. Mound has been a major tritium handling facility for over 20 yr. Multigram quantities of tritium are routinely handled in various production, recovery, research, and development processes. Mound is widely recognized as a leader in the design, installation, and operation of high-purity glovebox atmosphere systems, and tritium containment, effluent control, and waste packaging systems. Demonstrated performance and experience in these strategic technology areas makes this facility ideally suited for meeting LLL`s tritided accelerator target needs. After consolidation and evaluation of various inputs of information, the authors feel confident that Mound can fabricate and recover RTNS-II targets to meet LLL requirements. This proposal, therefore, outlines their plan for performing this work and requests that Mound Facility be designated by LLL as the fabrication and recovery site for large-diameter fully tritided accelerator targets.

Project planning and project management of Baseball II-T (open access)

Project planning and project management of Baseball II-T

The details of the project planning and project management work done on the Baseball II-T experiment are reviewed. The LLL Baseball program is a plasma confinement experiment accomplished with a superconducting magnet in the shape of a baseball seam. Both project planning and project management made use of the Critical Path Management (CPM) computer code. The computer code, input, and results from the project planning and project management runs, and the cost and effectiveness of this method of systems planning are discussed. (auth)

Color and experimental physics

After a brief review of the color hypothesis and the motivations for its introduction, the experimental tests arare discussed. It is assumed that colored states have not been produced at present energies and only experimental tests which apply below the color threshold, when color is a ''hidden symmetry,'' are discussed. Some of these tests offer the possibility of distinguishing between quark models with fractional and integral quark charges. (auth)

Internal friction in uranium (open access)

Internal friction in uranium

Results are presented of studies conducted to relate internal friction measurements in U to allotropic transformations. It was found that several internal friction peaks occur in $alpha$-uranium whose magnitude changed drastically after annealing in the $beta$ phase. All of the allotropic transformations in uranium are diffusional in nature under slow heating and cooling conditions. Creep at regions of high stress concentration appears to be responsible for high temperature internal friction in $alpha$-uranium. The activation energy for grain boundary relaxation in $alpha$-uranium was found to be 65.1 +- 4 kcal/mole. Impurity atoms interfere with the basic mechanism for grain boundary relaxation resulting in a distribution in activation energies. A considerable distribution in ln tau$sub 0$ was also found which is a measure of the distribution in local order and in the Debye frequency around a grain boundary. (auth)

A Physicochemical Evaluation of the HQ-1 Core from the Pricetown I, Underground Coal Gasification Test Site (open access)

A Physicochemical Evaluation of the HQ-1 Core from the Pricetown I, Underground Coal Gasification Test Site

Core samples of coal and rock were obtained from the HQ-1 environmental test well at the Pricetown I, Underground Coal Gasification Test Site. A comprehensive analytical program was performed to characterize the coal samples. The rocks associated with the coals are composed of clay size material containing low amounts of organic matter and hydrocarbon gas relative to the coal seams. The fine grained sediment above and below the coal seams appear to be an effective gas seal. The coals were encountered in two intervals of 1 foot and 6 feet thickness separated by 2 feet of shale. The coals are classified as high volatile A or B bituminous based on vitrinite reflectance, fixed carbon, and calorific value. Coal maceral analysis shows that the coal is heterogeneous in petrographic properties. The vitrinite group is the predominant maceral constituent. Fusinite, semi-fusinite, massive micrinite, and sporinite are present in varying amounts. The distribution of porous fusinite layers within the coal seams may be important in the reverse linkage stage of the gasification process. The coal in the bottom seam contains an average of 45.6 standard cubic feet of free methane per ton of coal. This methane may assist in initiating the gasification process. …

The Direct Production of Electron Pairs in Nuclear Emulsion by 100 and 200 GeV Protons (open access)

The Direct Production of Electron Pairs in Nuclear Emulsion by 100 and 200 GeV Protons

It is proposed to study the direct production of electron pairs produced when a high energy proton interacts with the Coulomb field of a nucleus. This process occurs at fourth order in quantum electrodynamics. This phenomena, called trident production when the incident particle is an electron, is characterized by a single incident primary track and three emerging tracks. Accelerator experiments on direct pair production by protons have not been previously reported, due to the small cross-sections at energies less than 100 GeV. However, at an energy of 100 GeV the cross-section for the direct creation of electron pairs by protons in emulsion is about 10{sup -25}cm{sup 2}.

A Proposal to Continue Measurements of Direct Muon Production in the Forward Direction (open access)

A Proposal to Continue Measurements of Direct Muon Production in the Forward Direction

The authors recently have measured the direct muon production in the forward direction at small p{perpendicular} and find a large direct muon to pion ratio. At x = 0.3 the ratio is {mu}{sup -}/{pi}{sup -} = 1.83 {+-} 0.43 x 10{sup -4} for negatives and {mu}{sup +}/{pi}{sup +} = 6.4 {+-} 1.3 x 10{sup -5} for positives. The direct production of {mu}{sup +} and {mu}{sup -} are equal although the {pi}{sup +}/{pi}{sup -} ratios is large. They propose to continue these measurements and extend them to higher x. These new measurements would also include the A dependence of the {mu}/{pi} ratio. Based on their experience with this apparatus, they believe it is possible to extend these measurements of single lepton production to production by incident pions and kaons.

Effect of a large Oth harmonic octupole on stable betatron oscillations (open access)

Effect of a large Oth harmonic octupole on stable betatron oscillations

S>The effect of a 0th harmonic octupole (that is, constant in dependence on azimuth) on stable betatron oscillations is treated in smooth approximation. In this approximation, an exact invariant is obtained. Bounded motion results, except when the octupole component is very large. A condition for stability- is obtained and, in the case of bounded motion, an expression for the amplitude variation is given. Some comments are made regarding the method of phase averaging. (auth)
