Non-relativistic current algebra in the N/V limit (open access)

Non-relativistic current algebra in the N/V limit

The case of a noninteracting infinite Bose gas at zero temperature is studied in the formalism of local current algebras, using the representation theory of nuclear Lie groups. The class of representations describing such a system is obtained by taking an N/V limit'' of the finite case. These representations can also be determined uniquely from the solutions of a functional differential equation, which follows in turn from a condition on the ground state vector. Finally a system of functional differential equations is formulated for a theory with interactions, using a proposed definition of indefinite functional integration. (auth)

Acoustic emission energy to pulse height converter (open access)

Acoustic emission energy to pulse height converter

An enengy-to-pulse-height converter was developed for use in acoustic emission testing. This instrument accepts an amplified signal from a piezoelectric crystal and generates a pulse whose amplitude is propontional to either the energy or width of the input signal. Either linear or logarithmic responses can be selected. Theory, circuit design, and performance specifications have been determined, based on calculations and measurements. (auth)

Ezquery (open access)

Ezquery

EZQUERY is a generalized information retrieval and reporting system developed by the Data Processing Services Department to provide a method of accessing and displaying information from common types of data-base files. By eliminating the costs and delays associated with coding and debugging special purpose programs, it produces simple reports. It was designed with the user in mind, and may be used by programmers and nonprogrammers to access data base files and obtain reports in a reasonably brief period of time. (auth)

Brickwall effect (open access)

Brickwall effect

A quantitative account of the brickwall effect is given. By combining the theory of the resistive wall instability- with the theory of a nonuniform incoherent tune shift, it is shown how the brickwall effect manifests itself as a limit on the current tune density (current/tune spread) at some critical stack width. A description of the effect in the CERN ISR is given. It is also shown, by an example, how the limiting current condition can be used in a certain class of storage ring design. (auth)

Annual progress report (open access)

Annual progress report

The nonlinear analysis of plasma instabilities in the threshold regime is discussed. The emphasis remains on carrying out calculations in realistic geometry and making comparison with experiment. Attention has shifted entirely to fully ionized plasma. An analysis was made of the collisional drift-wave instability. Considerable progress was made in explaining the explosive nature of the mirror-flute instability and in understanding the flute instability in the presence of both density and temperature gradients. The application of the threshold method to parametric instabilities in nonuniform plasma is discussed. Details of the results and comparison with experiment are given. (auth)

Mathematical centering on the rigid arm sweep gage (open access)

Mathematical centering on the rigid arm sweep gage

Mathematical Centering, a technique which corrects measurement errors due to part misalignment on the Rigid Arm Sweep Gage, has been in general use at Rocky Flats plant since October 1972. History of the need and development is included. Described also is a theory to explain why some parts appear to be less accurately made when mathematical centering is used than when not used. Capabilities and operator options are discussed and a flow chart given of the basic logic which the computer control program applies. Derivations of formulas have been included in an appendix. (auth)

Current quarks, constituent quarks, and symmetries of resonance decays (open access)

Current quarks, constituent quarks, and symmetries of resonance decays

The transformation between ''current'' quarks and ''constituent'' quarks recently suggested by Melosh is examined with respect to its predictions for pionic decays of resonances. It implies the use of SU(6)/sub W/ for classifying particle states but not for describing decay processes. lnstead, pion emission proceeds via DELTA L/sub z/ = 0, plus or minus 1, where L is the internal (''quark'') orbital angular momentum. This decay symmetry is called SU(6)/sub W/ (DELTA L/sub z/ = 0, plus or minus 1). It is proven equivalent for any decay A yields B + pi (where A, B are arbitrary qq-bar or qqq hadrons) to the /sup 3/P/sub 0/ quark-pair creation model for such decays, as formulated by Micu, Colglazier, Petersen and Rosner. The roles of final orbital angular momenta l and of SU(3) x SU(3) subgroups of SU(6)w are also discussed, and some new predictions are made for decays of meson resonances below 1700 MeV. (auth)
