Revision of horizontal control rods to permit utilization of neutrons for by-product production, 105-C, 105-KE, 105-KW

The purpose of this budget study is to analyze the problems involved at 105-C, 105-KE, and 105-KW Buildings to revise the existing horizontal control rods to permit utilization of neutrons for by-product production, compare alternate solutions, and provide necessary budget data on the proposed solution. The sponsor of this budget study is Reactor Operations.

TWO-DIMENSIONAL (r,z) MULTIGROUP CALCULATION FOR AN INTERMEDIATE SPECTRUM CRITICAL ASSEMBLY (open access)

TWO-DIMENSIONAL (r,z) MULTIGROUP CALCULATION FOR AN INTERMEDIATE SPECTRUM CRITICAL ASSEMBLY

The results of two-dimensional (r,z) multigroup calculations of an experimental low-power reactor (PPA19) are described. Comparison is made between calculated results and experimental measurements of reactivity, power distribution, and sodium activation. Generally good agreement is observed between calculation and experiment. This calculation was performed in 1954 and represents the first application of Roe's twodimensional multigroup formulation to the analysis of an operating critical assembly. The over-all objective of such calculations is to ascertain the accuracy of two-dimensional multigroup methods in order to facilitate their application to future problems in reactor design. (auth)

A SIMULATION STUDY OF A REFLECTOR CONTROL SYSTEM FOR A HETEROGENEOUS BOILING REACTOR (open access)

A SIMULATION STUDY OF A REFLECTOR CONTROL SYSTEM FOR A HETEROGENEOUS BOILING REACTOR

The feasibility of using a reflector control system for a heterogeneous boiling reactor through use of analog simulatlon tecbeiques was examined. The reactor kinetics, reactivity, and steam generation were simulated electronically while the hydraulic portion of the reflector system was represented by a full- scale physical mock-up. The two portions of the system were coupled together, and an attempt was made to achieve a stable, nonoscillating system. Various configurations of hydraulic coupling between the reflector tank and surge tank were used to produce the desired representation of the frictional forces in the system. A system of baffle plates in the coupling produced the desired damping. With the stable system, the effect of steam-load-demand changes for various values of incremental moderator worth was examined. These studies showed that a reflector control system for this type of reactor is feasible. (auth)

Description of a Thermonuclear Reactor Based on the Use of a Layer of Relativistic Electrons to Confine and Heat the Plasma (open access)

Description of a Thermonuclear Reactor Based on the Use of a Layer of Relativistic Electrons to Confine and Heat the Plasma

A long layer of rotating relativistic electrons was employed in a proposed scheme of a thermonuclear reactor to provide a closed pattern of magnetic field liens and to heat the plasma to fusion temperature. Parameters of a production machine and experimental model are presented. The general requirements for the plasma confinement at adequate density and temperature are summarized. Establishment of the electron layer is described. The equilibrium of the plasma under these conditions was investigated and the stability of this equilibrium distribution determined. (M.C.G.)

Results of experimental tests simulating slow plugging of a BDF process tube (open access)

Results of experimental tests simulating slow plugging of a BDF process tube

The purpose of this report is to present the results of an experimental program investigating the transient response of a BDF process tube to sudden plugging of the coolant stream. The program was directed toward determining the degree of protection offered by the Panellit pressure gage system to the hazards arising from flow reductions following such plugs.

Spectrophotometric Determination of Cerium With Tiron (open access)

Spectrophotometric Determination of Cerium With Tiron

A spectrophotometric method for the determination of cerium and Tiron (disodium-1,2-dihydroxybenzene-3,5disulfonate) was applied to the determination of cerium in samples which contain uranium and zirconium. The ceriumTiron complex in solutions of pH 8 or greater exhibits an absorption maximum of 500 m mu . This reagent does not react with any other lanthanive element. The interference of iron, uranium, and zirconium was eliminated by extracting these interfering elements with a solution of trioctylphosphine oxide in cyclohexane. (auth)
