HIGH PERFORMANCE PLASMAS ON THE NATIONAL SPHERICAL TORUS EXPERIMENT (open access)

HIGH PERFORMANCE PLASMAS ON THE NATIONAL SPHERICAL TORUS EXPERIMENT

The National Spherical Torus Experiment has produced toroidal plasmas at low aspect ratio (A = R/a = 0.86d0.68m - 1.3, where R is the major radius and a is the minor radius of the torus) with plasma currents of 1.4MA. The rapid development of the machine has led to very exciting physics results during the first full year of physics operation. Pulse lengths in excess of 0.5s have been obtained with inductive current drive. Up to 4MW of High Harmonic Fast Wave (HHFW) heating power has been applied with 6MW planned. Using only 2MW of HHFW heating power clear evidence of electron heating is sden with HHFW, as observed by the multi point Thomson scattering diagnostic. A non-inductive current drive concept known as Coaxial Helicity Injection (CHI) has driven 260kA of toroidal current. Neutral beam heating power of 5MW has been injected. Plasmas with PI ( =2p0<p>/B2 = a measure of magnetic confinement efficiency) of 22% have been achieved, as calculated using the EFIT equilibrium reconstruction code. P limiting phenomena have been observed, and the maximum p, scales with I&z& High frequency (>MHz) magnetic fluctuations have been observed. H-mode plasmas are observed with confinement times of > 100ms. Beam heated …

On the Path to Zero Energy Homes (open access)

On the Path to Zero Energy Homes

Just imagine living in Florida and your fantasies might turn to swaying palms, fresh orange juice and lots of air-conditioning. For most people, a summer spent in Florida's heat and humidity would be unbearable without it. So air-conditioning is a necessity. But it's also a big energy drain, accounting for about 35% of all electricity used in a typical Florida house. As the largest single source of energy consumption in Florida, a home's air-conditioning load represents the biggest energy challenge. The Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) designed a project to answer this challenge. Two homes were built with the same floor plan on near-by lots. The difference was that one (the ''control home'') conformed to local residential building practices, and the other (the ''Zero Energy home'') was designed with energy efficiency in mind and solar technology systems on the roof. The homes were then monitored carefully for energy use. The project's designers were looking to answer two important questions: Could a home in a climate such as central Florida's be engineered and built so efficiently that a relatively small PV system would serve the majority of its cooling needs--and even some of its daytime electrical needs? And, would that home …

RESPONSE FUNCTION OF THE BGO AND NAI(T1) DETECTORS USING MONTE CARLO SIMULATIONS. (open access)

RESPONSE FUNCTION OF THE BGO AND NAI(T1) DETECTORS USING MONTE CARLO SIMULATIONS.

The high efficiency of the BGO detectors makes them very attractive candidates to replace NaI(T1) detectors, which are widely used in studies of body composition. In this work, the response functions of the BGO and NaI(T1) detectors were determined at 0.662,4.4, and 10.0 MeV using three different Monte Carlo codes: EGS4, MCNP, and PHOTON. These codes differ in their input files and transport calculations, and were used to verify the internal consistency of the setup and of the input data. The energy range of 0.662 to 10 MeV was chosen to cover energies of interest in body composition-studies. The superior efficiency of the BGO-detectors has to be weighed-against their inferior resolution, and their higher price than that of the NaI detectors. Because the price of the BGO detectors strongly depends on the size of the crystal, its optimization is an important component in the design of the entire system.
