The painting celebrates prominent Scottish-born Naval commander John Paul Jones who served during the American Revolution and his crew aboard the Bonhomme Richard. On September 23, 1779, the crew engaged with the British Serapis and won with Jones giving the famous line "I have not yet begun to fight".
