Discussing her enjoyment when visiting Engels' classroom and how the children were so receptive and interested in the art lesson. Enclosed in the letter, Broadus has provided an interesting art reproduction by artist Melissa Miller and her work "Clowns," hoping that Engels can be able to use while teaching her class the letter "M." Broadus will contact Engels at a later date to discuss details about another visitation.

Photocopy of a letter from Nancy Reynolds, Project Coordinator of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts to Museum Educations, in regards to the NTIEVA Newsletter. Reynolds requests of the museums educators, contributions for the newsletters: regular columns, details about an exhibit, education programs or guests speakers. Reynolds writes that they're trying to publish four newsletters a year so she would like their contributions or articles as soon as possible. Reynolds has also included a call for "The Docent Educator" and has included with her letter their guidelines for submissions.

Photocopy of a letter from Bill Cormack, Director of Fine Arts for Dallas Public Schools to Bill McCarter, co-director of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts. In regards to McCarter's letter of January 16. Cormack writes that they appreciates McCarter's offer to match funds for training the teachers at the DMA, however the money from the district has not been budgeted for that purpose so Cormack declines the invitation.

Discussing the current and future budgeting of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts with the Getty Center and the use of the left over funding from the FY96 year to be used in the FY97 year. Attached to the letter is a revised budget including the request to carryover the remaining funding.

The recommendation letter is in regards to the news of the Met's consideration of having one of UNT's graduate students, Rebecca Arkenberg, hold an internship in Howes's department. McCarter goes on to write about how wonderful of a student Arkenberg is and that he'll be sad to see her go but her skills are superb beyond others and her work with North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts is exemplary.

Photocopy of a press release, from the Getty Center in regards to the 1995 Doctoral fellowships, that has been awarded to two students. Melinda Mayer, of Pennsylvania State University and Melody Milbrandt, of Florida State University have been awarded the fellowships in the field of visual arts education by the Getty Center, the awards will provide the scholars $12,500 in grant money to support their research. The press release goes into further details about what each student will be researching.

Photocopy of a letter from Robert H. Smith, Senator, Mississippi State Senate, to Jack Davis, co-director of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts. To thank Davis for his success in promoting music and art in the curriculum as an instructional tool. Smith writes that he was successful on August 10, 1992 in having the Southern Legislative Conference adopt the resolution stating the need for music and arts education in public school curriculum and the success of the movement will depend on securing financing. Smith ends the letter asking for Davis's assistance in that matter.

Photocopy of a letter from Vicki Rosenberg, program officer of the Getty Center, to the Regional and Californian Institute Exhibition Staff. In regards to "Achieving National Education Reform: Art Education as Catalyst" conference being held at San Francisco Hilton and Towers, February 3, 1993. The letter holds information about travel arrangements needed to be made before January 20th, hotel reservations and notification that the Getty center will cover the cost of lodging, incidental expenses that the center will reimburse related to the attendance at the conference, including meals and transportation from airport, exhibition staff duties being members of the regional institute, and conference registration. Enclosed with the invitation, are a schedule of the conference for the exhibit staff and an agenda list.

Photocopy of a letter from Bill McCarter, co-director of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Howard Dunn and Janice Wiggins, Dallas ISD. Inviting Dallas Independent School District into a five year plan with NTIEVA, since their last minute implementation process prevented Dallas from becoming part of the Institute previously. Details about what is required from the district is written at the end of the letter and that McCarter will be happy to discuss further details of financial obligations.

Photocopy of a letter from Vicki Rosenberg, the Getty Center, to Jack Davis and Bill McCarter, co-directors of NTIEVA, in regards to their fiscal year of 1995, FY95, funding for North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts. Rosenberg states that the funding has been sent to Harold Williams, president of the J. Paul Getty Trust, for review yet being unaware of his schedule she cannot give them a specific notification date of the funding approvals or deny. Rosenberg thanks Davis and McCarter for the informative progress report and has made a series of comments and questions that she would like answered and returned no later than September 1, 1994.

Photocopy of a letter from Leilani Lattin Duke, director of the Getty Center to Jack Davis, co-director of NTIEVA, in regards to the articles from the Dallas Morning News, Davis had sent prior. Duke writes that she is pleased to see that the Dallas schools are adding seventeen more art and music teachers to their elementary schools and wonders if Dallas ISD is open to the DBAE program, discipline-based art education.

The Getty Education Institute has provided the participants with a summary of the DBAE Leadership forum that was held January 11, 1997. The summary describes all that had transpired at the DBAE Leadership conference, beginning with a speech from the Director of Getty Education Institute for the Arts, Leilani Lattin Duke. The context of the summary is positive, the recommendations from the conferences' discussion are being used by the Education Institute to inform long-range plans for educational reform, taking arts education into the next century.

Exclaiming how excited Broadus was when she left Kolter's classroom. Broadus writes that the Summer Institute program seems to be going very successful and that she is pleased with the implementation of the discipline-based art education and with how the members of T.D. Marshall's are involved. Broadus writes that she plans to revisit the classroom at the end of the month for another session and that she'll call to confirm the time and to discuss with Mr. Graham what time she could visit his classroom for the writing art lesson.

In regards to Plano's commitment as a full partner in the North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts and their implementation of full two-week summer institute in the summer of 1995. Attached to the letter are stipend worksheets for the current income of the faculty to be involved with the program.

Photocopy of a letter from Julie Abel, the Getty Center, to the Regional Institute Directors, in regards to the upcoming arts assessment. The Arts Education Assessment Consortium, AEAC, is administered by the Council of Chief State School Officers to all the RIG states. The Center is providing support to the AEAC to develop assessment prototypes in the visual and performing arts and believes that if the DBAE, discipline-based art education, is embedded in the assessment prototypes it will strengthen the impact within the state and nationally. A list of state contacts is attached to the letter.

Tocco writes to confirm Fort Worth ISD's commitment as a full partner in the North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts. FWISD will plan and implement full two-week summer institute and a minimum of three extended institute / renewals during the 1995 - 1996 school year. Tocco writes that they will cover any costs that exceed the $5,000 contributed by NTIEVA. Enclosed in the letter are stipend worksheets for the faculty.

In regards to HEB's commitments to North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts and that their Associate Director Jan Schronk will contribute at least 20% of her time during the 1993 - 1994 calendar year to activities related to staff development and implementation of the discipline-based art education program. The letter is in regards to Rosenberg's and Val Marmillion's visit to Denton on the morning of January 18th and they will be leaving the afternoon of January 20th. The evening of the 18th Rosenberg and Marmillion are meeting with Melba Whatley of the Marcus Foundation to discuss the importance of funding arts education. The rest of their time will be spent with Davis and NTIEVA.

In regards to an invitation Bancroft had received from Harold M. Williams, President of the J. Paul Getty Trust, to attend a dinner on January 12, 1995 in connection with the Getty Center's national conference. Duke is writing to give more information on the conference, which is being held from January 11th - 14th at the Washington Hilton and Towers in Washington, D.C. The three day conference will feature speakers from business, education, government and the arts.

Inviting Peck to attend the "Learning through Art: The Integration of Art Across the Curriculum" at El Paso ISD Professional Development Center, on March 31, 1994. The seminar is being presented by North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, and will address the correlation between art and Texas Assessment of Academic Skills, TAAS. The presentation will also focus on the discipline-based art education, DBAE. Davis, McCarter and Reynolds hope Peck can attend.

Photocopy of a letter from Nancy Reynolds, project coordinator of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Nancy Ruff, Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD. In regards to a letter that Bill McCarter and Jack Davis wrote to Russ Chapman, Principal of Lakewood Elementary School, to congratulate Chapman on being selected by the Getty Institute to attend a National Administrators Focus Group Conference. Reynolds informs Ruff that Chapman will give presentations on two different days about the importance of arts in education, June 8th and June 14th.

Photocopy of a letter from Jack Davis, Dean of the School of Visual Arts, to David Kesterson, Vice Provost for the University of North Texas. To request more space for North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts by wanting access to Rooms 305 & 303 B in Marquis Hall, UNT. Davis understands that the need for space is great, but NTIEVA has proven themselves to be a viable operation with consistent external funding for its program, along with a major outreach for UNT. Davis writes that in the last five years the Institute has generated more than 1,400,000 in grant funds and has only grown more steadily with each passing year. Thus with the expansion of the program, Davis requests more space to continue their operations as their previous space has become overly crowded.
