The email is to the "Houston Group" from Jack and Jeff, reminding the group about the press announcement of Transforming Education Through the Arts in Los Angeles, set by Harold Williams and Vartan Gregorian for October 11, 1995. Davis asks of the group who can go to LA and to let Vicki Rosenberg know by September 25th and to let her know how many directors and funders are able to make the trip as well.

The letter was forwarded from Kathy Talley-Jones to Nancy Walkup Reynolds, Project Coordinator of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts. Jones hopes that Reynolds can clear up the misunderstanding Andrews is addressing in her e-mail. Andrews suggests that the key note speaker of the TAEA conference, Texas Arts Education Association, wants to dismantle the arts education in the Austin Independent School District and would like the Getty Center to clarify these intentions.

In regards to the upcoming Young Audiences conference being held from April 24th to the 28th in Dallas. Jericho has mentioned that he asked Jeffrey Patchen to be a speaker on Saturday, the 27th and that Patchen has sent a confirmation of his appearance, however, Jericho writes that his budget is limited and was wondering of Davis is interested in having him come talk to his students and staff. Jericho has also written to Bill McCarter to ask if they are interested in Patchen for the institute.

In regards of scheduling a two-week summer institute at the Dallas Museum of Art teachers in the Dallas Independent School District. McCarter is hoping that the DMA could provide a laboratory for the fellows to have a "capstone" experience that would benefit the DMA, NTIEVA, DISD and the Marcus Foundation from such a collaboration. An issue McCarter addresses is finding the money to pay the teachers for attending, possibly a shared cost between the district and NTIEVA, he ends the letter saying many details have to be worked out. In regards to the send-off party for Allison Perkins, Education Director of the Amon Carter. The event is to be held, September 11, 1995 at the Amon Carter Museum Library from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm.

Photocopy of a press release, from the Getty Center in regards to the 1995 Doctoral fellowships, that has been awarded to two students. Melinda Mayer, of Pennsylvania State University and Melody Milbrandt, of Florida State University have been awarded the fellowships in the field of visual arts education by the Getty Center, the awards will provide the scholars $12,500 in grant money to support their research. The press release goes into further details about what each student will be researching.

Photocopy of a letter from Jack Davis, co-director of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Janice Wiggins, Dallas ISD. Discussing the use of grant money. Wiggins requested that the grant money, intended to be used for support of Dallas I.S.D's participation in the Secondary Institute be used to stipends for participants of the Elementary Institute instead. Davis writes back that this is not possible for several reason which he encloses in the letter, the first being that he does not want to jeopardize the relationship with his funders by using the grants for something that was not made clear in the condition when the money was given. Davis explains that if the money is not used for its original intended purpose for which they were in agreement, then they are obligated to return the money back. To confirm Denton Independent School Districts's commitment as full partner in North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts. Denton ISD will participate in full two-week summer institute, the summer of 1995 and will organize with Pilot Point ISD a minimum of four extended institute / renewals during the 1995 - 1996 school year. Thomas is attaching a worksheet at the end of the letter to show details about the stipends based on salaries of the faculty.

Requesting further revised materials from NTIEVA as they've submitted a proposal for the FY96/FY97 year using their proposal from FY95. Rosenberg notes that there have been new developments with the NTIEVA program and is hesitant using a proposal from the FY95 year, and so to proceed with the review process they need to submit a proposal that is up to date. In regards to an invitation to a multi-year project sponsored by the Getty Center and the College Board, "The Role of the Arts in Unifying the High School Curriculum." The goal of the project is to expand the scope of school reform by demonstrating how the arts can strengthen the high school curriculum. Duke has provided a Request for Proposal, RFP, and encourages them to share the RFP with the schools who will have an interest with the program and to send their interest letter by March 20, 1995 and their submission by May 31, 1995.

Abel writes that she is sending them this inventory in order to get their thoughts on if or how they could be used in the summer institutes or the national specialty programs. If the CD's were used, the Getty would need a report back from the directors on how they were used and by who.

The brief descriptions will be used to create an easy-to-understand description for the information sent to general classroom teachers.

In reference to a letter Dorothy had sent to Kathy Talley-Jones of the Getty Center, about some concerns Andrews had after attending a Texas Arts Education Association conference. In particular, some concerns about what Dr. Fox has said during the conference which Reynolds finds disturbing, as many other faculty had not reported it from that perspective. The rest of the letter goes into details about North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, and the good they have been doing for Texas institutes and higher arts education.

In regards to the spring of 1995 progress report Davis and McCarter had sent Rosenberg about their activities and achievements for NTIEVA. Rosenberg is interested to hear that Bill McCarter plans to retires from NTIEVA after the summer of 1997 and commends both of them for their leadership they have brought to NTIEVA. Rosenberg requests that they address certain issues in their next report due October 1, 1995 or to send them separately so that she may review them.

Photocopy of a letter from Suzi Alost-Reid to Bill McCarter, writing about how much Reid loved McCarter's presentation, leading them to a higher level thinking and that the "Chimney and Water Tower" is more meaningful now that McCarter lead them through the analysis of its elements. On October 17, Reid will lead an art discussion with Art Sinks to motivation teachers and students to use art to write to the TAAS objectives. Reid writes that she will use "Chimney" to open her discussions here forward because how McCarter inspired her, she thanks him and the involvement NTIEVA has made on her.

Regarding a meeting that fell on June 22, 1995, notably, the participation of Dallas ISD in future activities with the Institute. McCarter starts the letter with the proposal of a new time frame for the Institute activities, and mentions how the meeting brought up the ideas of having all-day Saturday sessions. However, McCarter expresses his concern that some teachers from the Dallas ISD might be unable to attend all-day Saturday sessions, and how important it is that they will attend all the meetings because of how complex the Institute is. Included in the letter is an observation from Chad Woolery, stating that due to budget and time that Dallas would be unable to continue participation with NTIEVA as a consortium member. McCarter addresses that they have had issues with Dallas since they began to participate.
