The XH-40 is a six-place, turboshaft-powered light helicopter, designed with the primary mission of battlefield medical evacuation. Operated by one or two pilots, it could carry four passengers. Bell Aircraft Corporation Chief Pilot Floyd W. Carlson and Chief Experimental Test Pilot Elton J. Smith made the first flight of the Bell Model 204 (designated XH-40-BF serial number 55-4459 by the United States Army) at Bell’s helicopter factory in Hurst, Texas.

Commercial film produced by McDonnell Aircraft Corporation to promote the experimental XV-1 convertiplane, a gyroplane submitted to the Army-Air Force joint research program in 1951.
