Simmons.

Sandefer expresses his appreciation for the note from Carswell and the wires and phone calls from his friends in Abilene but advises that he has never given any serious thought to getting into politics and has "no intention whatever of making the race".

A letter written to Commander Carswell, from Sid Bowers, Post Comm., The American Legion, Bernice Coles Post No. 191, Breckenridge, Texas. Bowers issues an invitation to Carswell to attend their annual Post and Auxilliary Banquet in Breckenridge advising that Dr. Sadler of TCU will speak. Carswell penciled a notation regarding having answered this letter on 2/16/43.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell ("Tommy"), Abilene, Texas, from J. D. Sandefer, Jr. ("Jake"), Breckenridge, Texas dated June 1, 1943. Sandefer expresses his appreciation for the letter from Carswell knowing that some of his efforts as Chairman of the Board have been appreciated. He advises of his recent effort to obtain an armed services setup on the campus, the resignation of Dr. White as president of HSU and touches on a past discussion regarding allowing the Executive Committee to frame the policies stating, again, that his chairmanship was not perfect but that he did his best. Sandefer advises that Carswell was asked after by everyone at the Easter Service and offers his sympathy regarding Truett's death [E. Truett Compere].

A letter addressed to Mr. Thomas N. Carswell, Clerical Audit Supervisor, Breckenridge, Texas from L. M. Fellbaum, Major, Q. M. C., Policy Supervisor, State Headquarters for Selective Service, Austin 17, Texas dated August 6, 1943. Fellbaum commands Carswell to instruct Mr. Kenneth L. Walter on the duties of Clerical Audit Supervisor.

A letter addressed to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from J. D. Sandefer, Jr., Breckenridge, Texas dated November 10, 1944. Sandefer announces an upcoming meeting of the trustees of Hardin-Simmons University listing the matters to be discussed including the type of building to be erected as the Sandefer Memorial noting that it has been twenty-five years since a major building has been built on campus. Sandefer handwrites a postscript stressing his hope that Carswell will be present.

Sandefer expresses his appreciation for the letter from Carswell and for his thoughts. He expresses his regret that Carswell was not at the meeting and requests his suggestions for the campaign.

Sandefer announces a meeting of the Board of Trustees of Hardin-Simmons University to be held on March 29 advising of a report to be made by Raymond Foy regarding the search for a president and a report by O. D. Dillingham regarding a campus plot on the future development of the University. Sandefer advises that due to travel restrictions this meeting might take the place of the annual meeting held each year in June. Sandefer requests that Carswell reply by mail stating that he will be present.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Hamilton, Texas from J. D. Sandefer, Jr., Breckenridge, Texas dated April 9, 1945. Sandefer advises that he sent a copy of Carswell's letter to Dr. Richardson. Sandefer advises that he will not be carrying on as Chairman of the Board stating, "Frankly, I have butted my head against concrete long enough and have grown tired doing so."

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from C. C. Beene, First Baptist Church, Breckenridge, Texas, dated January 7, 1946. Beene informs Carswell that Mr. J. W. Wash and he were in Abilene to see if he could help them "get an under-cover man to catch some of the boot-leggers in their town".

A request that Carswell compile his resolutions concerning The Good Citizenship Leaque and mail them to Rev. L. V. Reazin, secretary for the organization.

Sandefer expresses his appreciation for the work done by Carswell on the invitation and program. He makes two suggestions regarding the program. One suggestion is to include the names of Boyd, Porter, Becker and Perini on the program which will increase attendance at the memorial service. Sandefer then confides that he has arranged for the Railroad Commission to have their October statewide hearing in Abilene on the morning of the 13th which will assure them of an outstanding group of operators to be present for the memorial service.

Sandefer replies to a letter from Carswell regarding the proposed Planning Commission in which he suggests the need for an active ex-students association and a good public relations department. In regards to this suggestion Sandefer advises that he has received letters concerning funding for the Hunter Memorial from contacts that should be followed up.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas from J. D. Sandefer, Jr., Breckenridge, Texas dated August 15, 1949. Sandefer makes a request that Carswell give some thought to the wording for a plaque to be placed in his Dad's building [Sandefer Memorial Library]. He advises Carswell that he will be in Colorado for a week as the guest of Gene Holman and would appreciate having something from Carswell when he returns.
