Emotion Regulation in Bipolar Disorder: A Meta-Analytic Review

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a serious mental illness characterized by dramatically differing mood states and marked costs for the individual and society, making it important to find factors associated with the condition. Deficits in emotion regulation have been found across a wide range of mental health disorders and may represent an important risk factor for BD. Literature in this area has large methodological inconsistencies and many conclusions are mixed. Therefore, the current study sought to conduct a meta-analytic review of literature related to emotion regulation in BD. Results suggest that people with BD broadly report more frequent use of maladaptive emotion regulation strategies and less frequent use of adaptive emotion regulation strategies than healthy controls. Of these strategies, the largest effect sizes were found for risk-taking, rumination, impulsivity, catastrophizing, and self-blame. Comparisons to other clinical groups suggest that emotion regulation in BD is largely similar to major depressive disorder and less severely impaired than borderline personality disorder. Moderator analyses of BD samples in different mood states suggest mood state plays a limited role in emotion regulation strategy usage, although some maladaptive strategies may be more common in samples with depressive symptoms. An Extension of a Peer-Mentoring Training Program for College-Aged Students

An important predictor of the success of a peer-mentoring program is the quality of the relationship between the peer mentor and the mentee. A previous study identified target outcomes, operationally defined target behaviors, and developed a computer-based instruction (CBI) training module to teach peer mentors relationship skills. The previous study suggested that the CBI training module increased target behaviors in pre-and post-tests that were typed. The current study replicated and extended the previous study with additional participants and analyzed responding during a video-chat generalization assessment. We observed an increase in target behaviors during the CBI post-test for 7 out of 8 modules across two participants and an increase in target behaviors for 5 out of 12 target behaviors across three participants for the generalization assessment. Results suggest that the CBI training modules may be an effective way to teach behaviors that contribute to a high-quality relationship when participants engage in typed responses. However, the extent to which these behaviors generalize to a video-chat generalization assessment may need further research.

Factors Impacting Physician Patient Interaction Time: Knowledge Transfer and Use of Technology

In this study we explore the factors impacting physician patient interaction time and how these factors can be used to improve health knowledge transfer from physicians to patients. We also investigate how technology tools can be used to improve this interaction time. Physician patient interaction time is important because this is the time when both sides engage with each other, exchange information so that physicians understand their patients' health issues. Given the increasing health care costs and demand for physician time, over the years, this interaction time has been distracted due to many factors. It is important to explore these factors and provide some possible solutions, such as advanced knowledge management systems, such as knowledge portals. To identify the factors impacting this interaction time and the role of technology, we first identified the variables and then developed hypotheses. We used data from the surveys administered by the AHRQ and NCHS to test these hypotheses. We conducted correlation analyses to determine the factors that can be used to improve health knowledge transfer from physicians to patients and how technology tools can be used to improve physician patient interaction time. Factors Influencing User Experience and Consumer Behavioral Intention to Use Visual Analytics Technology

The purpose of this study was to assess visual analytics technology acceptance and user experience among in vitro fertilization (IVF) consumers. The research aimed to show how visual analytics tools and technologies can be applied in the consumer space to enhance how users interpret healthcare success rate data. This exploratory user evaluation study utilized a quantitative dominant, mixed-methods approach with a convergent parallel design based on the data-validation variant. Survey data were collected from consumers who were currently seeking information about IVF treatment in the United States. The study findings indicated that the extended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2) constructs of performance expectancy and hedonic motivation influenced consumer behavioral intention to use visual analytics technology, while effort expectancy did not. Further, the findings from the user experience and qualitative analyses indicated that there is strong support for consumer adoption of visual analytics technology for personal healthcare decision-making. These findings may help in the design and development of modern, interactive visualization tools that could be used to visualize public or private healthcare data for analysis by consumers. Gender Differences, Age Differences, and the Relationship between Time Spent Playing Video Games and Cognitive, Affective, and Behavioral Engagement

This study quantitatively and qualitatively measured gender and age differences in cognitive, affective, and behavioral engagement while playing video games among the University of North Texas (UNT) undergraduate students. Also, it examined the relationship between time spent playing video games and the three engagement states. For the quantitative method, the data of this study was collected via an online survey, the Consumer Video Game Engagement Scale (CVGES), distributed at UNT (N = 140). The qualitative method involved asking open-ended questions at the end of the survey. The CVGES uses a 5-point Likert scale that encompasses three subscales: (a) Cognitive Engagement, (b) Affective Engagement, and (c) Behavioral Engagement. A series of analyses were conducted to analyze the quantitative data via SPSS. Also, the open-ended questions' responses were analyzed by using an inductive analysis approach. The main findings of this study were: (a) there were significant differences between males and females in cognitive, affective, and behavioral engagement, (b) there were no significant differences between age groups in the three engagement states, and (c) there is a positive relationship between the time spent playing a video game and the three engagement states. Graduate enrollment management (GEM) is an area of enrollment management that focuses on graduate and professional education. GEM's responsibilities can include various functions such as strategic planning, marketing, recruitment and admissions, academic advising, financial aid, student services, retention, and alumni relations. The comprehensive structure of GEM puts a significant amount of pressure on enrollment managers as its unique interdependence model creates an environment where professionals must be cross-trained in several areas, manage through grey areas, cultivate relationships with personnel across the campus, accomplish department goals, support their student population, and all while staying in alignment with the institutional mission. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore GEM from an enrollment managers perspective. Housing Recovery, Reinvestment Decisions, and Neighborhood Institutions

This research investigates the association between neighborhood institutions and the reinvestment decision of households after a disaster. The research employs GIS techniques and data containing appraised housing values, the neighborhood coalition boundaries, the HOA boundaries, building damage data, and building permit data from August 2017 to August 2018. This dissertation performed various methods of analysis. For the first, a literature review was conducted. Possible predictors of institutional, physical/geographical, demographic, and economic factors were discussed. A broad literature review of housing recovery, local government, and emergency recovery studies were investigated. Second, hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) was performed to determine the interaction effect of neighborhood institution type on the relationship between appraised housing value, disaster damage, and building permit. Given the data's nested structure, the submissions of building permit by households were affected by neighborhood characteristics (i.e., the type of neighborhood institution and degree of statutory control) at the jurisdictional level. For this study, Level 1 represented the household level, and Level 2 represented the jurisdictional level. Third, a chi-square analysis was performed to examine households' perceptions of neighborhood institutions and local government incentive programs. Identification and Characterization of Two Putative Sulfate Transporters Essential for Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation in Medicago truncatula

The process of symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF) in legume root nodules requires the channeling and exchange of nutrients within and between the host plant cells and between the plant cells and their resident rhizobia. Using a forward genetics approach in the Medicago truncatula Tnt1 mutant population followed by whole genome sequencing, two putative sulfate transporter genes, MtSULTR3;5 and MtSULTR3;4b, were identified. To support the hypothesis that the defective putative sulfate transporter genes were the causative mutation for the mutants' phenotypes, the M. truncatula Tnt1 population was successfully reverse screened to find other mutant alleles of the genes. The F2 progeny of mutants backcrossed with wildtype R108 demonstrated co-segregation of mutant phenotypes with the mutant alleles confirming that the mutated mtsultr3;5 and mtsultr3;4b genes were the cause of defective SNF in the mutant lines mutated in the respective genes. This finding was further established for mtsultr3;4b by successful functional complementation of a mutant line defective in the gene with the wildtype copy of MtSULTR3;4b. A MtSULTR3;4b promoter-GUS expression experiment indicated MtSULTR3;4b expression in the vasculature and infected and uninfected plant cells of root nodules. MtSULTR3;4b was found to localize to the autophagosome membrane when expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana. A transcriptomics study …

III Corps during the Surge Campaign: Operational Art and Counterinsurgency Myths

The role of Odierno's III Corps as MNC-I has failed to receive sufficient attention from studies of the 2007-2008 surge of U.S. forces in Iraq. However, was Odierno's employment of military force in time, space, and purpose based on the logic of conventional military operations that laid the groundwork for the successes gained in 2007 and 2008. III Corps's achievements as an operational headquarters were rooted in the successful application of operational art. Operational art is a way to conceptualize how to fight wars using campaigns of multiple, simultaneous, and successive operations across a theater of operations to achieve a unifying goal. While neither downplaying nor minimizing the importance of Army COIN principles, a study of MNC-I's December 2006-February 2008 campaign in Iraq through the neglected prism of operational art suggests that the campaign's success was due to the successful application of already established operational principles rather than from a revolution in the profession of arms.

The Impact of the Introduction of Value-Added Tax on Saudi Arabia's Economy, Budget, and Governance

Saudi Arabia introduced the VAT in 2018 in response to the nation's structural budget deficit caused, in large measure, by its dependence on revenue from oil and natural gas production. Initially the tax rate was 5 percent, but in July 2020 the rate was tripled to 15 percent. This dissertation examine the effect of the introduction of a value-added tax (VAT) on governance in Saudi Arabia. Specifically, we explore how the VAT's introduction has altered the Saudi bureaucracy, both its responsiveness and representativeness, and what is VAT effect on growth in GDP, public unemployment, and changes in national budget. The data used to analyze these research questions are collected from several sources including the Saudi General Authority for Statistics, Saudi Ministry of Finance, and World Bank. Different methods of analysis were used such as ordinary least squares, difference in differences, and least squares dummy variables to answer the research questions. The study found that VAT is associated with an increase in GDP per capita, and VAT was negatively associated with total debt per capita, deficit per capita, and non-Saudi unemployment. Public education in America became a target of reform since the passage of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. Some reforms come from court cases, some from presidents wanting to enact change, and others from political events from as far away as Russia. Yet, one concept remains the same: the improvement of educators is needed for supporting student growth and achievement. Getting both special education and general education teachers together to work collaboratively is critical to the growth of teachers and students. A gap in education research exists in the area of including special education teachers in high functioning profession learning communities (PLCs). The purpose of this study was to examine the impact that special education teachers have on students and other teachers when special education teachers are included in content-area PLCs. Using a mixed method case study design, quantitative data from an electronic survey and qualitative data from face-to-face interviews and PLC documents were collected and analyzed to answer two research questions. The survey findings revealed that the studied district operates high functioning PLC teams. Influence of Externally Applied Magnetic Field on the Mechanical Behavior of Paramagnetic Materials

Current ways to alter the microstructure of materials are usually through heat treatments, alloying, and other physical metallurgical methods. Recent efforts in the 21st century are focused on altering the microstructure of a material without physical contact which can be achieved through exposure to a magnetic field (MF). The motivation of this research is to study the quantum effects by subjecting solid-state metals to exposure of MFs. Many of the popular metals currently used in industry are paramagnetic. The ability to alter the microstructure and thus properties of these paramagnetic materials through a magnetic field would open new avenues to the field of research, including, potentially, a pollution-free, non-contact route. The effects of a magnetic field on the mechanical properties of paramagnetic materials were observed through compression testing of the pure paramagnetic material samples induced in a magnetic field. XRD and PPMS were used to relate flow stress to dislocation density and magnetic property of the samples when exposed to the presence of a static magnetic field. The effects of a magnetic field relative to alloyed paramagnetic materials were observed through the same procedure as pure paramagnetic elements. Integrating Body and Mind Awareness into the Pedagogy of Expiratory Breathing, Large Intervallic Leaps, and Altissimo Production when Performing the Alto Saxophone

Specific movements within the pelvic floor, abdomen, diaphragm, ribs, and spine are show to be associated with either inspiration or expiration when playing the alto saxophone. These movements support tone production during the performance of large intervallic leaps and altissimo register notes. During expiratory breath, specific vocal-tract formations and movements are show to be adaptive with either the higher and lower registers. Anatomical areas studied include the glottis, larynx, pharynx, velum and soft palate, tongue arch, and tongue proximity to the reed. Flouroscopy and endoscopic research by Watkins, Pattnoede, and Jordheim challenge common pedagogical advice for palm-key and altissimo register notes such as using a high tongue arch, fast air and the "ee" vowel. Literature by historical and even current pedagogues do not clarify their use of the terms "larynx" or "throat." In the context of their writing those terms could ambiguously mean oropharynx, laryngopharynx, glottis, neck muscles or vertical position of larynx. Mental tension, fear, and negative inner dialogue are shown to cause reflexive and tension-based movement. These issues negatively impact the formation and direction of adaptive vocal-tract movements for large ascending intervallic leaps and altissimo-register note production. Integrating Multiple Deep Learning Models for Disaster Description in Low-Altitude Videos

Computer vision technologies are rapidly improving and becoming more important in disaster response. The majority of disaster description techniques now focus either on identify objects or categorize disasters. In this study, we trained multiple deep neural networks on low-altitude imagery with highly imbalanced and noisy labels. We utilize labeled images from the LADI dataset to formulate a solution for general problem in disaster classification and object detection. Our research integrated and developed multiple deep learning models that does the object detection task as well as the disaster scene classification task. Our solution is competitive in the TRECVID Disaster Scene Description and Indexing (DSDI) task, demonstrating that it is comparable to other suggested approaches in retrieving disaster-related video clips.

Intelligent ECG Acquisition and Processing System for Improved Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Prediction

The survival rate for a suddent cardiac arrest (SCA) is incredibly low, with less than one in ten surviving; most SCAs occur outside of a hospital setting. There is a need to develop an effective and efficient system that can sense, communicate and remediate potential SCA situations on a near real-time basis. This research presents a novel Zeolite-PDMS-based optically unobtrusive flexible dry electrodes for biosignal acquisition from various subjects while at rest and in motion. Two zeolite crystals (4A and 13X) are used to fabricate the electrodes. Three different sizes and two different filler concentrations are compared to identify the better performing electrode suited for electrocardiogram (ECG) data acquisition. A low-power, low-noise amplifier with chopper modulation is designed and implemented using the standard 180nm CMOS process. A commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) based wireless system is designed for transmitting ECG signals. Further, this dissertation provides a framework for Machine Learning Classification algorithms on large, open-source Arrhythmia and SCA datasets. Supervised models with features as the input data and deep learning models with raw ECG as input are compared using different methods.
