Housing Recovery, Reinvestment Decisions, and Neighborhood Institutions

This research investigates the association between neighborhood institutions and the reinvestment decision of households after a disaster. The research employs GIS techniques and data containing appraised housing values, the neighborhood coalition boundaries, the HOA boundaries, building damage data, and building permit data from August 2017 to August 2018. This dissertation performed various methods of analysis. For the first, a literature review was conducted. Possible predictors of institutional, physical/geographical, demographic, and economic factors were discussed. A broad literature review of housing recovery, local government, and emergency recovery studies were investigated. Second, hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) was performed to determine the interaction effect of neighborhood institution type on the relationship between appraised housing value, disaster damage, and building permit. Given the data's nested structure, the submissions of building permit by households were affected by neighborhood characteristics (i.e., the type of neighborhood institution and degree of statutory control) at the jurisdictional level. For this study, Level 1 represented the household level, and Level 2 represented the jurisdictional level. Third, a chi-square analysis was performed to examine households' perceptions of neighborhood institutions and local government incentive programs. Data Mining Using Direct Injection Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry, Infrared Spectroscopy, Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy, and Polymerase Chain Reaction for the Rapid Identification of Nutraceuticals and Contaminants

There has been a rapid surge toward "organic" products devoid of GMOs, MSGs, and other common compounds found in processed foods that continue to indicate an association with an increased risk for disease. These consumers seek nutrients and vitamins that are lacking in their diet and lifestyle in the form of nutraceuticals for disease prevention and treatment as well as overall lifestyle enhancement. However, these products generally lack clinical evidence as well as legal definition. Due to this ambiguity, nutraceuticals are neither considered a food product nor a pharmaceutical product. Furthermore, due to their alleged natural properties allowing for safe, therapeutic effects, nutraceuticals are being eagerly sought after by consumers in the place of pharmaceuticals. Additionally, since nutraceutical substances are "naturally" derived, there is a general lack of regulation regarding the manufacturing and distribution process. This mismanagement leads to lack of quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) protocols strictly implemented to define appropriate production and storage parameters. Without these critical measures, consumers are subjected to contamination of their products resulting from improper storage conditions and unmanaged production. "The Opposite of Addiction is Connection": Next-of-Kin Narratives in Overdose Fatality Reviews

This study used ethnographic and qualitative research methods to provide data-driven support for the use of next-of-kin interviews to enhance overdose fatality review (OFR) datasets. This study's community of practice is a group of substance-use professionals that use OFRs to share confidential data and monitor Lucas County, Ohio substance use trends. To analyze OFR data collection, un-silo information, and understand how to include next-of-kin (NOK) interviews in the dataset, this study used rapid analysis, semi-structured interviews, and virtual participant observation methods. Rapid analysis showed current methods sufficiently collected demographic, vital statistics, and postmortem data from coroner reports; however, NOK interviews supplied narrative-derived information often missing or inconsistent in the dataset. Interviews with the community of practice and decedents' NOK showed dissonance between the two's perceptions of overdoses in Lucas County. Participants discussed themes, e.g., stigma, burnout, strained resources, and increasing fentanyl contamination-related overdoses. NOK needed accessible web-based resource options, linkages to current programs or services, stigma-free harm reduction education, and opportunities to form connections. Professionals explained the impact of widespread mental health problems, extreme social isolation, and economic pressures on overdose prevention during COVID-19. Modern Chinese Opera: A Performance Guide to Six Tenor and Baritone Arias from Selected Operas by Lei Lei and Guangnan Shi

With the emergence and development of Chinese opera market, a large number of excellent composers and original Chinese operas have emerged. Responding to the market demand for opera singers, many jobs came into being. The dissertation is used for western male singer who wants to get job opportunities to perform in China. The dissertation discusses three original Chinese operas, each of which features one tenor aria and one baritone aria. The research results in a performance guide for these six Chinese opera arias, in addition to providing detailed pronunciation rules of the Chinese alphabet along with an IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) guide, a word-for-word translation of each aria, an analysis of vocal skills and difficulties, and some of the physical requirements of the staging.

Counselors' Experiences: Training and Use of Standardized Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Tests in Play Therapy Practice

Assessment is a core component of the counseling identity. While previous literature has explored child clinicians' attitudes and use of standardized assessment instruments, less is known about the assessment practices of counselors providing play therapy to young children. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the subjective experiences of counselors who regularly use standardized social, emotional, and behavioral tests in their play therapy practice. Eleven professional counselors in the United States who regularly used standardized tests in play therapy participated in this study. The primary researcher utilized a transcendental phenomenological approach within a social, constructivist paradigm, along with an adapted phenomenological data analysis method. Six major themes were identified: professional development journey, use of standardized tests to enhance play therapy process, considerations for implementation in play therapy, counselor theoretical orientation and standardized tests, challenges in using standardized tests in play therapy, and advocacy and social justice issues. Implications for counselor education, clinical practice, and social justice advocacy are provided, along with recommendations for future research.

Using Gottman's Sound Relationship House Scales to Assess the Impact of Safe Conversations Workshops

This study replicated components from Babcock et al. (2013) by examining an Imago-based Safe Conversations (SC) workshop using Gottman's psychometrically established instruments for couple functioning. Participants were 28 married heterosexual couples (N = 56) with a mean age of 27.30 years (SD = 10.16), 89.3% non-Hispanic, 78.6% Black or African-American, 85.7% first time married, 75% with at least a bachelor's degree, and a median household income in the $100,000-150,000 range. Couples independently completed the online SC workshop, The Toolbox for Couples, within a 2-week timespan. For each of three variables regarding marital quality assessed at pre- and post-workshop—(a) marital friendship, (b) conflict management, and (c) marital adjustment—multilevel dyadic analysis was conducted for four outcomes: (a) overall Time*Gender interaction effect, (b) effect for women, (c) effect for men, and (d) interclass correlation between men and women. From pre- to post-test, participants improved on all three variables: Out of the 12 analyses, 11 yielded statistically significant improvement with one very large, six large, and five medium effects. Did the COVID-19 Pandemic Make Better Parents? A Qualitative Exploration of Parents' Experiences during an Historic Period

Predicated on the literature, parenting practices are subject to change following high-impact events. This understandably applies to the COVID-19 pandemic, a calamity of sheer magnitude. Despite the presence of maladaptive parenting behaviors in the pandemic, upsides (e.g., compassionate parenting practices, strengthened child-parent bond) did transpire as well. The present study is focused on whether and how parental betterment occurred and unfolded during the pandemic. The explicit research goal is to elucidate what positive parental responses and changes were and what drove those responses and changes. The study employed the phenomenological study to make a fine-grained inquiry into the researched phenomenon. Fourteen parents of varying demographic characteristics constituted the sample. One-on-one semi-structured interviews were conducted over Zoom for data collection. Thematic analysis was performed to code the data. I eventually constructed four themes: (1) targeted parental responses and changes, (2) refined parenting skills and practices, (3) heightened understanding of children and parenting, and (4) unsettled parenting styles. Each theme reflects a critical facet of the parenting experiences during the pandemic. TikTok Made Me Buy It! Consumer Motivations and Purchasing Behavior during COVID-19

Using Mehrabian and Russell's stimulus (S) - organism (O) - response (R) model, this study examined consumer motivations to consume user-generated content (UGC) and sponsored video content on social media during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study also investigated the impact of information consumption on purchasing behavior as the main constructs. The study used the consumption patterns of active and passive social media users to further understand the level of short-form video consumption related to purchasing behavior. Grounded upon the SOR theory, this study measured utilitarian and hedonic motivations as stimuli with user-generated content and sponsored content as organism and purchasing behavior as response. A quantitative snowball survey (n = 289) was used to collect data from TikTok users to examine the relationships between motivations, types of content, and purchasing behavior. Statistical analyses including descriptive statistics, reliability tests, factor analysis, and multiple regression analyses was used to profile the sample and to test hypothesized relationships. Vehicular communication not only supports safety services but also provides non-safety services like navigation support, toll collection, web browsing, media streaming, etc. The existing communication frameworks like Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) and Cellular V2X (C-V2X) might not meet the required capacity in the coming days. So, the vehicular community needs to adopt new technologies and upgrade the existing communication frameworks so that it can fulfill the desired expectations. Therefore, an increment in reliability and data rate is required. Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), 5G New Radio, Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) Code, and Massive MIMO signal detection and equalization algorithms are the latest addition to the 5G wireless communication domain. These technologies have the potential to make the existing V2X communication framework more robust. As a result, more reliability and throughput can be achieved. Distributed Source Coding with LDPC Codes: Algorithms and Applications

The syndrome source coding for lossless data compression with side information based on fixed-length linear block codes is the main emphasis of this work. We demonstrate that the source entropy rate can be achieved for syndrome source coding with side information when the sources are correlated. Next, we examine employing LDPC codes to apply the channel and syndrome concepts in order to satisfy the Slepian Wolf limit. Our findings indicate that irregular codes perform significantly better when the compression ratio is larger. Additionally, we looked at how well different applications performed when running on two different mobile networks. We have tested those applications which are used in our day-to-day life. Our main focus is to make wireless communication much easier. We know that nowadays data is increasing which led to increase in the transfer of data. There are a lot of errors while doing so like channel error, bit error rate, jitter, etc. To overcome such kind of problems compression and decompression should be done effectively without any complexity to achieve a high performance ratio.

The Relationship between Racial Colorblindness and the Self-Reported Implementation of Multicultural Teaching Practices among Teachers of Gifted Students

Culturally responsive instruction is recommended as a tool to help mitigate disparities in the recruitment and retention of culturally diverse students in gifted programs. However, the endorsement of colorblind racial ideology has been associated with lower multicultural teaching competency and the adoption of deficit perspectives among teachers. In addition to informing teachers' perceptions of students' abilities and potential, endorsing colorblind racial ideology may make it more difficult for teachers to recognize disparities that adversely impact students from traditionally minoritized and underrepresented groups. The current study examines the relationship between colorblind racial attitudes and multicultural teaching competency among teachers of students who have been identified as gifted and talented. In a large sample of Texas teachers, multiple regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between colorblind racial ideology, multicultural teaching knowledge, and the implementation of culturally responsive teaching practices when teaching gifted and talented students. Results indicate that racial colorblindness, sex, and multicultural teaching knowledge are all significant predictors of the self-reported implementation of culturally responsive instruction, while gifted-specific training and the proportion of students of color had no effects. Suicidality Among Service Members and Veterans: Moral Injury, Attachment, and Social Support

Since 2009, the suicide completion rate for military service members and veterans (SMVs) has exceeded rates in civilian populations, with risk highest among young, male veterans. Suicide risk factors include psychiatric illness, low social support, and repeated or prolonged exposure to traumatic events. Recent research further suggests that the experience of unresolved morally injurious events (MIEs) may create lasting feelings of guilt and shame that contribute to psychiatric illness. Additionally, adult attachment plays an important role in coping responses and relational strategies and may influence the degree to which SMVs experience helplessness and isolation that foster suicidal ideation. Protective factors such as social connectedness are important mitigating factors, substantially reducing the risk of suicidality. In the present sample of 206 combat SMVs, higher suicidal ideation was directly correlated with more MIEs, higher attachment avoidance and anxiety, and lower social support. Although neither social support nor attachment anxiety moderated the link between MIEs and suicidal ideation, a significant interaction between attachment avoidance and MIEs emerged, suggesting that higher attachment avoidance increases the risk for suicidal ideation among SMVs reporting more experiences of moral injury. Developing an Ontology for Examining Competencies for Higher Education Instructional Design Professionals

The purpose of this qualitative study was to develop an initial formal ontology of competencies needed by instructional design professionals in higher education. The ontology was constructed using the domain ontology design process. The initial ontology was then validated by eight expert instructional design professionals in higher education using an online survey. The quantitative responses were analyzed using descriptive statics to describe general trends in data while constant comparative coding method was used to identify themes in the data. Three themes emerged from the study: an expansion of instructional design competencies; the addition of a diversity, equity, and inclusion competency; and the removal of the programming competency. The findings are discussed and proposed changes to the ontology are provided.

Seeing in the Light: Using Expansion Microscopy to Achieve Super-Resolution in Transmitted Light

Light microscopy is inherently limited in resolution by properties of light such as diffraction and interference to 170-250 nm. Expansion microscopy is a quickly-developing method which achieves super-resolution by using a swellable hydrogel to physically expand biological samples themselves, rather than depending on the properties of fluorophores. This thesis demonstrates that expansion microscopy is a feasible means for achieving super-resolution in transmitted light microscopy modes. Though it has only been used for fluorescence imaging in the past, here I show that samples prepared for expansion microscopy—including liver tissue slices and myofibrillar bundles—are observable using transmitted light. While the majority of the original sample material is removed in the expansion process, the hydrogel retains visible evidence of these samples. These demonstrate increased detail under brightfield microscopy that is useful for characterization. Sarcomeric regions are identifiable by this method and are confirmed by fluorescence imaging. Thus, expansion microscopy is a means to bring super-resolution to transmitted light imaging and is entirely compatible with fluorescence for the localization of proteins of interest.

Big Game, Big Decisions, and Big Government: Understanding the Effects of Commodification on Deer and Feral Hog Hunting in Texas

My research examines how primary stakeholders interact with Texas' most harvested big game animals: white-tailed deer, which are increasingly impacted by chronic wasting disease (CWD), and feral hogs, which impact the landscape but effectively have no management strategy. Drawing on literature on wildlife governance in Texas, managing property and the commons, and disease landscapes, and broadly framed by themes of political and historical ecology, my research asks: (1) how do management goals for deer and feral hogs compare to hunting practices and hunting culture in Texas? (2) How are deer commodified by the Texas deer breeding industry? (3) How does the commodification of deer by breeders impact deer hunting practices in Texas? To examine how local stakeholders manage CWD and feral hogs, I conducted interviews among 21 stakeholders, including hunters, game wardens, game ranch managers, and deer breeders in Texas, as well as conducting participant observation at three deer conferences. Analysis shows that contrary to my expectations, not all participants viewed feral hogs negatively, with some viewing them as profit-making ventures. Inversely, how stakeholders contend with and understand CWD varies by a stakeholder's ability to generate profit from deer breeding. Medicago truncatula NPF1.7: Structure-Function Assessment and Potential as a Phytohormone Transporter

In Medicago truncatula, the MtNPF1.7 transporter has been shown to be essential for root morphology and nodulation development. The allelic MtNPF1.7 mutants, Mtnip-1 (A497V), Mtnip-3 (E171K), and Mtlatd (W341STOP), show altered lateral root growth and compromised legume-rhizobium symbiosis. To assess the role of a series of distinct amino acids in the transporter's function, in silico structural predictions were combined with in planta complementation of the severely defective Mtnip-1 mutant plants. The findings support hypotheses about the functional importance of the ExxE(R/K) motif including an essential role for the first glutamic acid of the motif in proton(s) and possibly substrate transport. The results also question the existence of a putative TMH4-TMH10 salt bridge, which may not form in MtNPF1.7. Results reveal that a motif conserved among MFS proteins, Motif A, is essential for function. Hypothetically, the Motif A participates in intradomain packing of transmembrane helices and stabilizing one conformation during transport. The mutated valine (A497V) in Mtnip-1 may interfere with the lateral helix. Mutating a residue (L253) on the lateral helix with reduced side chain restored Mtnip-1 function. The predicted residue (Q351) for substrate binding is not essential for protein function. To probe the possibility that MtNPF1.7 transports auxin, two heterologous …

In this thesis, I explore strategies used by the local timber industry to influence forest policy on the Black Hills National Forest. These strategies include leveraging political pressure, proposing alternative interpretations of existing laws, and first requesting and then rejecting scientific data. Discursive strategies used by the timber industry to influence US Forest Service policy are compared and contrasted with those used by the environmental movement. The paper explores when and why stakeholders use different discursive strategies to influence forest policy.

Electrophysiological Auditory Measures to Identify Potential Cortical Markers of Tinnitus

Tinnitus, or the perception of sound in the absence of external acoustic stimuli, is a common condition that impacts approximately 10-15% of the United States population, with similar prevalence rates reported in other countries. Current diagnosis of tinnitus relies on case history and audiometric testing, which depend on responses provided by the patient. To date, there is no objective test that can be used for tinnitus diagnosis, despite the high prevalence and significant financial impacts of this condition. Cortical auditory evoked potentials have shown promise in their ability to assess not only the integrity of the auditory system, but also higher level preattentional and cognitive processing. For this study, the pitch-matched tinnitus frequency was used to evoke an auditory late response. Double oddball paradigms with the tinnitus frequency as the deviant stimuli were also used to evoke a mismatch negativity and P300 to determine where along the auditory pathway biomarkers of tinnitus may exist. The results of this study suggest that when the tinnitus frequency is incorporated into paradigms designed to produce cortical auditory evoked potentials, differences exist between participants with tinnitus and matched controls without tinnitus. Elements of Formal Continuity in Robert Schumann's "Novelletten," op. 21 and Other Piano Works

This dissertation explores Robert Schumann's treatment of phrase boundaries in the Novelletten, Op. 21, and his other piano works from the late 1830s. It argues that in contrast to Classical-style works, which generally feature clearly delineates phrases and formal sections, Schumann's works of the 1830s undermine formal boundaries, making it difficult to discern exactly where phrases and sections begin and end. I examine three means through which Schumann promotes a sense of formal continuity in his music: (1) by beginning phrases with a cadential harmonic progression; (2) by ending phrases without a cadence; and (3) by weakening the boundary between the middle section and the recapitulation in small-ternary-form pieces. The dissertation culminates with a detailed analysis of Noveletten Op. 21, No. 5.

An Optimized Control System for the Independent Control of the Inputs of Doherty Power Amplifier

This thesis presents an optimized drive signal control system for a 2.5 GHz Doherty power amplifier (PA). The designed system enables independent control of the amplitudes and phases of the drive signals fed to the inputs of two parallel PAs. This control system is demonstrated here for Doherty PA architecture with a combiner network which is used as an impedance inversion between the path of two parallel connected PAs. Independent control of the inputs is achieved by incorporating a variable attenuator (VA) and a variable phase shifter (VPS) in each of the two parallel paths. Integrating VA and VPS allows driving varying power levels with an arbitrary phase difference between the individual parallel PAs. A Combiner network consists of a quarter-wave transmission line at the output of the main power amplifier, which is used to invert the impedance between the main and peaking transistor. Differences in Academic Capital in Students at a Two-Year versus a Four-Year Institution

Academic capital is composed of social processes that result in family knowledge of educational expectations, and strategies that result in a successful college experience. Often underrepresented and first-generation students lack a wealth of academic capital. This lack of knowledge may affect their college success. I used the Academic Capital Scale to research differences in academic capital in students attending a 2-year and a 4-year institution. To address differences in these two groups, I performed an independent samples t-test. The analysis was done with and without transformations (transformations were unsuccessful.) and both procedures yielded no statistical significance in mean academic capital scores. In addition, a Mann-Whitney U test was completed which also resulted in no statistically significant difference in mean rank of scores. I performed a logistic regression to determine whether academic capital could predict students' enrollment status (full time vs. part time). The model accounted for 2% of the variance in the enrollment status and the academic capital scores did not contribute significantly to the model, meaning they did not predict enrollment status. Finally, I ran a multiple regression to investigate if low socioeconomic status, gender identity, first-generation status, enrollment status, or race/ethnicity could predict students' academic capital score. Nanofluidic Membrane Based on Covalent Organic Framework: Design Strategies and Applications

Nanofluidic is an emerging field of applying fluid properties in nanochannels or nanostructures. The nanoporous channel with a pore size of less than 100 nm will strongly affect the motion of the fluid. Meanwhile, the pore environment, such as hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties, charge density, and host-guest recognition would be crucial for the transportation of molecules and ions in the pore. This thesis is focused on the synthesis, characterization of nanofluidic membranes and their applications to reverse electrodialysis. Chapter 1 focuses on the importance and objective of this work. Chapter 2 gives an overview of nanofluidic and classical nanofluidic structure–covalent organic frameworks (COFs). In Chapter 3, a series of COFs membranes with different surface charge densities were designed by employing a multivariate (MTV) strategy. A volcano-like relationship between the surface charge density and output power density was observed when the membranes were applied for osmotic energy harvesting. Chapter 4 integrates the temperature gradient to the covalent organic frameworks nanofluidic system to further explain the thermophoretic mobility of ions. The recorded osmotic energy production density was obtained while ion concentration polarization was alleviated with increasing hydrodynamic convection effects. Investigating Accretion Mechanisms and Host Galaxy Environments of z~4 Quasars

Observations of quasars at the highest accessible redshifts have revealed supermassive black holes (SMBHs) with masses much too massive to be accounted for by the growth mechanisms observed in the local universe. Masses up to 10 10 M ⊙ up to z~7 seem to suggest some type of secular evolution or external influence to feed the earliest SMBHs at extremely high rates. Observations at such redshifts come at expensive technical cost and require significant dedicated space-telescope observing time. However, in the z~4 regime, SMBHs are still relatively young, exhibit extreme growth rates, and are economically accessible for both frequent shallow snapshots as well as deep observations. In this dissertation, the accretion mechanisms of z~4 quasars and the structure of their host galaxies and nearby companions are investigated to search for evolution over cosmic time as well as outside influence on star formation rates (SFRs) and SMBH growth. Building the longest available X-ray light curves of four representative radio-quiet quasars, X-ray variability is evaluated at timescales from days to years in the rest frame, and robust simulations allow both qualitative and quantitate measurements of variability to compare with samples at lower redshifts.
