The Crucial Role of Solvation Forces in the Steric Stabilization of Nanoplatelets (open access)

The Crucial Role of Solvation Forces in the Steric Stabilization of Nanoplatelets

Article says that the steric stability of inorganic colloidal particles in an apolar solvent is usually described in terms of the balance between three contributions: the van der Waals attraction, the free energy of mixing, and the ligand compression. The authors demonstrate that for sufficiently large nanoplatelets, solvation forces are proportional to the interacting facet area, and their strength is intrinsically tied to the softness of the ligand shell.

Developmental changes in lignin composition are driven by both monolignol supply and laccase specificity (open access)

Developmental changes in lignin composition are driven by both monolignol supply and laccase specificity

Article proposes a model in which, during C-lignin biosynthesis, caffeyl alcohol noncompetitively inhibits oxidation of coniferyl alcohol by cell wall laccases, a process that might limit movement of coniferyl alcohol to the apoplast.

Discussion about Zangskari royal legacy and societal shifts

In this insightful discussion, Gyafo (King) Phuntsok Dawa, the King of Padum, answers the questions raised on Zangskar and its history by Dr. Tadeusz Slupski, a regular visitor to Zangskar since 1977. Gyafo Dawa delves into the rich heritage of his lineage and the Zangskari royal family. He recounts the pivotal moment in June 1948 when Zangskar faced invasion from Pakistani forces, prompting his father and the entire family, accompanied by Kushok Bakula Rimpoche, to seek refuge in Himachal Pradesh. Dr. Slupski further inquires about the demographics of Zangskar, leading the discussion towards the significant societal and cultural changes Zangskar has experienced over the past four and a half decades, since he first visited. Recorded in Old Padum village, Ladakh Union Territory, India.

Electroencephalogram Signals for Detecting Confused Students in Online Education Platforms with Probability-Based Features

Article discusses how despite the advantages of online education, it lacks face-to-face settings, which makes it very difficult to analyze the students’ level of interaction, understanding, and confusion. This study proposes a novel engineering approach that uses probability-based features (PBF) for increasing the efficacy of machine learning models.

An experimental and chemical kinetic modeling study of the role of potassium in the moist oxidation of CO

Article investigates the effect of KCl on moist CO oxidation in a laminar flow quartz reactor. Experiments were conducted in the absence of O2 (gasification), as well as under reducing and fuel-lean conditions, in the temperature range 873–1573 K, and the results were interpreted in terms of a chemical kinetic model.

Inhaled diesel exhaust particles result in microbiome‑related systemic inflammation and altered cardiovascular disease biomarkers in C57Bl/6 male mice

Article discusses the authors' investigation the hypothesis that exposure to inhaled diesel exhaust particles alters the gut microbiome and promotes microbial-related inflammation and cardiovascular disease biomarkers. To determine whether probiotics could prevent diet or DEP exposure mediated alterations in the gut microbiome or systemic outcomes, a subset of animals on the HF diet were treated orally with 0.3 g/day (~ 7.5 × 108 CFU/day) of Winclove Ecologic® Barrier probiotics throughout the study.

A lipidomics platform to analyze the fatty acid compositions of non-polar and polar lipid molecular species from plant tissues: Examples from developing seeds and seedlings of pennycress (Thlaspi arvense)

Article describes a stepwise targeted lipidomics approach to characterize the polar and non-polar lipid classes using complementary LC-MS methods. This lipidomics workflow was applied to developing, mature, and germinated pennycress seeds/seedlings and found unexpected changes among several lipid molecular species.
