UNT Libraries Assistive Technology Report 2021 (open access)

UNT Libraries Assistive Technology Report 2021

This report summarizes the results of a survey given to UNT Library employees on assistive technology practices. In fall 2021, the Library Accessibility Committee conducted an online survey about assistive technologies in the Libraries. The purpose of this survey was 1) to learn more about the assistive technology in the Libraries (e.g., types of technology, employee knowledge, etc.) and 2) to learn more about employee training preferences. The survey included 13 questions divided among three sections: assistive technology, training preferences, and suggestions. Sixty-seven (67) library employees responded to the survey. Results are provided in the Assistive Technology Survey Report.

Beyond Traits and States: Interpersonal Decentering Is Also Activated Social Information Processing

Article drawing on a process-focused model of interpersonal decentering's causal validity, the authors manipulated activation experimentally, comparing decentering scores from expressive writing essays under standard instructions (activation condition) versus control instructions, then correlated decentering scores with use of activated language. With condition controlled, both decentering scores correlated significantly with greater proportions of present-tense verbs, positive emotion words, and cognitive words, showing trait effects.

Effect of Laser Shock Peening Parameters on Residual Stresses and Corrosion Fatigue of AA5083 (open access)

Effect of Laser Shock Peening Parameters on Residual Stresses and Corrosion Fatigue of AA5083

Article examining Aluminium alloy 5083 subjected to Laser Shock Peening both with (LSP) and without protective coating (LPwC) at multiple pulse densities. A second LPwC treatment was conducted fully submersed under water, in addition to the standard laminar water flow condition. Results show that compressive residual stresses were generated in all cases, although their character varied depending on the peening strategy and method of confinement.

The hygroscopicity of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) with a gradient fiber structure (open access)

The hygroscopicity of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) with a gradient fiber structure

This article studies the hygroscopicity of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) with a gradient fiber structure assessed by a dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) apparatus and fitted with a Haillwood–Horrobin (H–H) model. The effects of the chemical composition, gradient fiber structure, and mesopore structure of the bamboo were also investigated. The results demonstrate that the hygroscopicity of bamboo gradually increases from the outer to the inner layer along the thickness of the culm wall, which is related to the gradient distribution of the fibers. The structure–function relationships between the chemical composition, multi-scale structure, and hygroscopicity identified in this study provide a theoretical basis for bamboo drying and storage technology, as well as the processing and application of bamboo fiber-based composites.

Organic Collaborative Research Partnership Building: Researchers, Needle and Syringe Program Providers, and People Who Inject Drugs

Article reporting on the use of an organic community research partnership-building approach between researchers, needle and syringe program (NSP) providers, and people who inject drugs (PWID) in Canberra ACT, Australia. Results found engaging in relationship building around partner priority activities created mutual understanding and trust premised in authenticity of the evolving partnership. The organic approach, which included a partner audit of the research tools for relevance, resulted in high acceptance and enrollment into the research by NSP providers and PWID. The results of this study provide evidence for the benefits of organic collaborative research partnership building with NSP providers and PWID for authentic service program implementation.

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Forensic Typologies: Getting Specific about Trauma among Institutionalized Youth

Article on Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Utilizing data from 3382 institutionalized delinquents in Texas, logistic regression models indicated multiple associations between ACEs and forensic typologies in both adjusted and unadjusted models, with sexual abuse and physical abuse emerging as the most consistent and robust predictors. Supplemental sensitivity models confirmed the associations between sexual abuse and physical abuse among youth who fit multiple forensic typologies. Models fared poorly at identifying youth who are engaged in fire setting. Implications for total and singular ACEs are discussed, along with how those relate to more clinically meaningful, forensic forms of juvenile delinquency.
