Evaluation of a Chicken 600K SNP genotyping array in non-model species of grouse (open access)

Evaluation of a Chicken 600K SNP genotyping array in non-model species of grouse

This article tested the cross-species application of the Affymetrix 600K Chicken SNP array in five species of North American prairie grouse (Centrocercus and Tympanuchus genera). This study study provided evidence for successful cross-species application of the chicken SNP array in grouse which diverged ca. 37 mya from the chicken lineage. As far as the authors are concerned, this is the first reported application of a SNP array in non-passerine birds, and it demonstrates the feasibility of using commercial SNP arrays in research on non-model bird species.

Influence of ordered L1₂ precipitation on strain-rate dependent mechanical behavior in a eutectic high entropy alloy (open access)

Influence of ordered L1₂ precipitation on strain-rate dependent mechanical behavior in a eutectic high entropy alloy

This article focuses on Al0.7CoCrFeNi, a lamellar dual-phase (fcc + B2) precipitation-strengthenable eutectic high entropy alloy. The back-stresses from the coherent L12 precipitate were insufficient to cause improvement in twin nucleation, owing to elevated twinning stress under quasi-static testing. However, under dynamic testing high density of twins were observed.

Atomic layer deposition of BN as a novel capping barrier for B2O3 (open access)

Atomic layer deposition of BN as a novel capping barrier for B2O3

Article demonstrating in situ deposition of BN by sequential BCl₃/NH₃ reactions at 600 K on two different oxidized boron substrates: (a) B₂O₃ deposited using BCl₃/H₂O ALD on Si at 300 K (“B₂O₃/Si”) and (b) a boron-silicon oxide formed by sequential BCl₃/O₂ reactions at 650 K on SiO₂ followed by annealing to 1000 K (“B-Si-oxide”). The data presented demonstrates that ultrathin BN films deposited by BCl₃/NH₃ ALD are promising candidates for passivation of boron oxide used in shallow doping applications.

Mechanical property enhancement of self-bonded natural fiber material via controlling cell wall plasticity and structure (open access)

Mechanical property enhancement of self-bonded natural fiber material via controlling cell wall plasticity and structure

This article explores self-bonded natural fiber material (SNFM) as a promising alternative for plastic and wood owing to its abundant raw material resources and low environmental impact. In this study, a high-performance SNFM was developed by the comprehensive treatments for the plasticity and structure of fiber cell walls. The self-bonded mechanism for natural fiber materials was also discussed. The SNFM products showed excellent mechanical performance, which was superior to that of natural wood and plastic.

The Arabidopsis PAD4 Lipase-Like Domain Is Sufficient for Resistance to Green Peach Aphid (open access)

The Arabidopsis PAD4 Lipase-Like Domain Is Sufficient for Resistance to Green Peach Aphid

Article exploring PAD4 functions in plant defense by expressing the N-terminal PAD4 lipase-like domain (PAD4ᴸᴸᴰ) without its C-terminal EDS1-PAD4 (EP) domain. The authors show that transgenic expression of PAD4ᴸᴸᴰ in Arabidopsis is sufficient for limiting GPA infestation but not for conferring basal and effector-triggered pathogen immunity. This suggests that the C-terminal PAD4 EP domain is necessary for EDS1-dependent immune functions but is dispensable for aphid resistance. Moreover, PAD4ᴸᴸᴰ is not sufficient to interact with EDS1, indicating the PAD4-EP domain is required for stable heterodimerization. These data provide molecular evidence that PAD4 has domain-specific functions.
