This video contains the social justice keynote address for the 2018 University of North Texas Equity and Diversity Conference featuring Dr. Dafina-Lazarus (D-L) Stewart (PGPs: ze, zim, and zir). Dr. Stewart is professor in the School of Education and Tri-Chair of the Student Affairs in Higher Education program at Colorado State University. Over the course of zir 17-year faculty career, ze has focused most intently on issues of race and ethnicity, sexuality, and gender, as well as religion, faith, and spirituality in their research, teaching, and service to professional organizations and institutions across the nation. In this session, Dr. Stewart speaks on navigating privilege and marginalization in building social justice competence.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Race is the culmination of a year-long discussion and production process that took place between African-American and White students and professors in the Department of Communication Studies. What began as a set of informal dinners, in which they slowly, haltingly, and gradually told stories about themselves, their families, and their histories with race, has resulted in a devised production that includes personal narrative and adaptations of literature that reveal what they learned on their journey from conversations to a performance that has been collaboratively conceived, written, and directed. Among their performances, the play served as the finale for this year’s 2018 Equity and Diversity Conference. The conference cut of this performance also features Shawn Brewer of Peterbilt, the conference’s production sponsor.

This video contains the keynote speech for the 2018 University of North Texas Equity and Diversity Conference featuring Rosa Clemente, 2008 Green Party Vice Presidential candidate, community organizer, and journalist. From Harvard to prisons, Rosa has spent her life dedicated to scholar activism. She is the president and founder of Know Thy Self Productions, which has produced four major community activism tours and consults on issues such as Hip-Hope activism, media justice, voter engagement among youth of color, third party politics, intercultural relations between Black and Latinx, immigrants’ rights as an extension of human rights, and universal healthcare. During her keynote session, Clemente addresses identity intersectionality as a bridge to inclusion.

Bal Raj Negi describes his occupations and experience in horticulture in Rakchham village and his own life before that. It was recorded at the Uma Guest House in Rakchham village, which Bal owns. Since Bal spent most of his time working outside of Rakchham village, he is actually not fluent in Chhitkul-Rakchham. Interestingly, he uses exclusively Hindi in the second half of the recording. From then on, he speaks faster, it is then very clear he is more conversant with Hindi.

Balbir Singh Negi describes his job as farmer and what he does during winter time to prepare for the next season's crops. The recording was made very close to Balbir's house, in front of one of the main temple's storage place. The door behind Balbir is typical of the temple doors all over Kinnaur district: wooden and beautifully carved.
