17 USC 109: The First Sale Doctrine (open access)

17 USC 109: The First Sale Doctrine

This document is part of a series of white papers on various copyright issues. One statute, 17 USC § 109, provides a number of exceptions specifically for libraries. In addition to fair use, there are a variety of other exceptions built into the copyright law that don’t get as much attention. This paper argues that as there is no digital first sale, libraries can continue to use 17 USC § 109 for physical collections and are safe to lend the books they own without worrying about copyright problems.

3D Atom Probe Tomography Study on Segregation of Yttrium in Modified Aluminum-Silicon Alloys (open access)

3D Atom Probe Tomography Study on Segregation of Yttrium in Modified Aluminum-Silicon Alloys

In this article, yttrium segregation behavior in Al-Si alloys has been studied using the three-dimensional atom probe tomography technique. Al-Si alloys were prepared by casting method, and yttrium was added to modify the eutectic silicon morphology in these alloys. The results indicated that yttrium is preferentially located within the Si phase, with the highest concentration at the interface between eutectic Al and eutectic Si.

Aircraft-Assisted Pilot Suicides in the General Aviation Increased for One-Year Period after 11 September 2001 Attack in the United States

The article describes a study that evaluated the possible effect the 11 September 2001, terrorist attacks had on pilot AASs in the U.S. Fatal aviation accidents in the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) database were searched using the following search words: “suicide”, “murder-suicide” and “homicide-suicide”. The timeline between 11 September 1996, and 11 September 2004, was analyzed. This study showed an association, albeit not determinate causal effect, of a very specific series of simultaneous terrorist murder-suicides with subsequent pilot AASs.

Artificially structured boundary for confinement of effectively unmagnetized cryogenic antimatter plasmas (open access)

Artificially structured boundary for confinement of effectively unmagnetized cryogenic antimatter plasmas

The article is from conference proceedings that discuss an artificially structured boundary (ABS) considered to consist of a spatially periodic arrangement of electrostatically plugged magnetic cusps. As envisioned, a non-neutral positron plasma could be confined by an ASB along its edge, and the space charge of the positron plasma would serve to confine an antiproton plasma. If the conditions of the two-species plasma are suitable, production of antihydrogen via three-body recombination for antimatter gravity studies may be possible.
