[A Matter of Time]

Photographs of the 2017-2018 artist's book competition winner "A Matter of Time" created by Samuel C. Cowan. Media: Leather, etched copper, screen print and watercolor on paper. A Matter of Time is the study of the effects of light and time on space. It is a celebration of repetition through subtle, predictable change. The first image is a triangular book, the middle of it a light brown triangle with subtle lines that make it resemble an eye. Image 2, the triangular book is opened up to show several panels in an accordion-like manner, containing illustrations of a house with bare trees by it and bright blue sky. The house is the same, but the shadow on it varies. Image 3, a closeup of three of the book panels, the houses on the illustration go from big shadow to small shadow from left to right.

The book is worn and brown, with the title printed in brown ink on a label, the wording framed by brown lines. Image 2, with page 20 titled "How To Die" on the left and page 21 on the right titled "The Effect." This copy of Siegfried Sassoon’s collection of poems, Counter-Attack and Other Poems, is a 1919 reprinting of the original 1918 edition, published by E.P. Dutton and Company in New York. The binding is made of brown paper over boards, parts of which have begun to chip away. As a decorated officer known for his heroic, often perilous, actions on the battlefield, Sassoon wrote poems that vividly depict his experience in the trenches.
