Oral History Interview with John Rue, March 2, 2017

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with John Rue. Rue’s son-in-law Scott Gremillion assists with the interview. Upon high school graduation in 1941 Rue enlisted in the Coast Guard. He completed training at the Naval Station in Algiers, Louisiana, and then went to Miami, Florida where he was stationed on a light ship. From there he went to Fort Lauderdale where he guarded a German ship that was in port. From there he went on to Maryland to be trained as an electrician. His job on the ships was an assistant to both the electrician and the cook. His rank was Electrician 1st Class. For almost a year he escorted ships going to Russia and later escorted troops and supplies to the Panama Canal and throughout the North Pacific. He helped make the airfield at Guadalcanal and would escort troops from Iwo Jima to Guadalcanal. His ship made the invasion at Iwo Jima. He returned from the Pacific and was discharged in 1946. He carried on with his work and family.

Interview with George Holcombe, a Methodist pastor and civil rights activist from Houston, Texas, and his wife and associate Wanda, from Sims, Texas. The Holcombes discuss their family origins, initial exposure to racial problems and civil rights, their respective educations, pastoral work in Baton Rouge and Chicago, the Ku Klux Klan and dangers encountered, work with the Ecumenical Institute of Chicago and empowering black communities, the 1968 Chicago riots, Fifth City, and similar work in Australia and the Philippines.

A group of seven men are seen performing in a carpeted room, with the men holding binders open in front of them and all of them wearing a black shirt and pants. Most of the men wear ties, one wears red suspenders and another an orange hat. A projector screen can be seen behind them. An organization that was notably affected by the AIDS crisis, is the Turtle Creek Chorale, a Dallas based men’s chorus. The group was formed in 1980 with 30 members and Harry E. Scher in the role of artistic director and conductor. The group sang together at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, taking on the name Turtle Creek Chorale as an allusion to the small tributary that passes through Oak Lawn. Today, the Chorale has over 200 dues paying members, consisting mostly of gay men, and is the most recorded men’s chorus in the world, with thirty-eight recordings and two feature-length documentaries.
