Traditional story about Raapa

Recording of the Raapa Story by Stephon Sankhil. A tiger, angry at being duped by Koreng, eats him. Koreng's sisters vow to marry whoever kills the tiger, and the only one able to do it is Raapa. Jealous, the other men conspire to kill Raapa, but he survives two attempts and tricks them so that they drown. In the end Koreng's sisters kill Raapa.

Oral History Interview with Paul Morabith, February 2, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Paul Morabith. Morabith was working as a machinist when he was drafted in July, 1942. He could have been deferred, but went into the Army Air Forces when he was called. He trained as a mechanic on B-26s. Eventually, he switched to aerial gunnery and went to England in April, 1944. He flew 32 combat missions, starting in France prior to D-Day. Morabith recalls returning to base on two engines and the crew contemplating whether to try for Sweden or home. He provides many details about his experiences flying combat missions as a tail gunner in a B-17 over Europe. He finished his tour in August, 1944 and returned to the US. After some rest, Morabith was scheduled to go to the Pacific and join a B-29 outfit, but the war ended. He was discharged early in September.

Oral History Interview with Charles Mazoch, February 5, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Charles Mazoch. Mazoch was drafted into the Army in August, 1942 and was attached to the 127th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division. He joined the unit on New Guinea after the Battle of Buna. He also participated in the invasion of the Philippines. Mazoch has considerable help relating his story from his daughter.

Oral History Interview with Bruce Greig, February 1, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Bruce Greig. Greig enlisted in the reserves and was called to active duty with the Army Air Forces in February 1943. He was sent to radio school and then radar school. Greig served stateside before being sent to Saipan as a part of a service group for the 73rd Bomb Wing. He describes the conditions on Saipan and how the airbase grew. Greig describes how he worked in a shop and specialized in a black box that was a part of early airplane radar units. He was then sent to Guam and eventually back to the US where he was discharged in February 1946.

Oral History Interview with Bill Marten, February 4, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Bill Marten. Marten joined the Merchant Marine in November 1943. He started as a fireman working as a water tender in the engine room. Marten describes some of his service on tankers crossing the Atlantic. He details an incident where he witnesses another tanker in his convoy explode after it was hit by a torpedo. Marten took part in 12 voyages and eventually left the Merchant Marine in 1948.
