The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with William Lozano. Lozano joined the Navy in January 1944 and trained at San Diego. From there he also attended radar school at Point Loma before reporting aboard the USS Washington (BB-56). He shares several anecdotes and provides much detail of his life aboard ship during WWII. He was discharged in May 1946.

Oral History Interview with Robert Pratt, August 17, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Robert Pratt. Pratt joined the Navy while in college and was finally called to active duty in July 1943. Then he went to midshipman school at Northwestern University, finishing in May 1944 with a commission. His first assignment was to USS LST-781, being assembled in Pittsburgh. Pratt tells several stories about being aboard USS LST-781 and going down the Mississippi River, through the Panama Canal and through several islands in the Pacific. Pratt was discharged in August, 1946.

Oral History Interview with Floyd Schexnayder, December 17, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Floyd John Schexnayder. Schexnayder was born in 1928. At the age of 16, he changed his birth certificate in order to join the Navy in mid-1944. He completed boot camp in San Diego, California. Beginning around February of 1945, he served as Seaman Second-Class in the gunnery department aboard the USS Terror (CM-5), loading 40mm quadruple antiaircraft guns. They transferred battle casualties to an Army hospital at Saipan, then traveled to Ulithi, where they serviced and supplied minecraft staging for the assault on Okinawa. In March, they arrived at Kerama Retto, serving as a flagship and tender for minecraft. Schexnayder worked hard protecting Terror and other U.S. ships from Japanese kamikaze planes. He describes their ship getting hit by one of these planes, and his participation in the events that unfolded. After the war ended, he was transferred to the USS Steady (AM-118), where they swept mines in the East China Sea. They returned to the U.S. in early 1946, and he received his discharge in August.

Oral History Interview with David L. Houston, May 17, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with David Lipscomb Houston. Houston graduated from high school around 1938. He enrolled in Pre-Med at Hardin Junior College, Wichita Falls, Texas in September of 1941. He enlisted in the US Army on 30 June 1942 and served with the 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. His unit landed at Fedala, Morocco on 8 November 1942 for the Invasion of North Africa. In September of 1943, they invaded Italy. Houston returned to the US in mid-1944, and was assigned as a surgical assistant in the New York Point of Embarkation Station Hospital. In July of 1945, Houston graduated from Officer Candidate School in Louisiana. He was discharged in late 1945, and remained in the Army Reserve for 28 years.

Oral History Interview with James Ulbrich, June 17, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with James Jennings Ulbrich. Ulbrich joined the Navy in February of 1945. He was transferred to Brown Field Airport, San Diego. He worked in ships service, selling merchandise, food, maintaining Coke machines. Ulbrich made the rank of Third-Class Petty Officer. After the base was decommissioned, he was transferred to El Centro and performed shore patrol duty and guarded prisoners. He was there when the war ended. Ulbrich continued his service until his discharge in August of 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Green Day. Day shares his memories of growing up during the Great Depression. He completed trade school to be a machinist. He joined the Navy around 1944. In May 1945 he was assigned to USS Halford DD-480, and they traveled to Pearl Harbor. They provided escort duty to Borneo, and Day served with the deck department helping to maintain the ship. In late 1945 Day experienced a typhoon aboard the ship. He was discharged in July of 1946.

Oral History Interview with Albert Machaud, June 17, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Albert Machaud. Machaud joined the Army Air Forces on 27 June 1946. He served as a control tower operator with the 128th Army Airways Communication System Squadron. He traveled throughout the Pacific, including Johnston Island, Wake Island, Kwajalein, Okinawa and into Tokyo by January of 1947, directing aircraft on new airstrips that had hastily been built during the war. He speaks of his experiences during his 2 years in occupied Japan. Machaud was discharged on 26 June 1949.

Oral History Interview with Elizabeth P. Vieau, May 17, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Elizabeth Penn Hammond Vieau. Vieau was born on 11 May 1919 in Atlanta, Georgia. After high school graduation in 1936, she attended Agnes Scott College in Decatur as a math major. Vieau joined the Navy WAVES around December of 1942, completed Supply Corps officer training at Harvard in Cambridge. She served as a paymaster for Naval ROTC students at Georgia Tech, and describes her financial responsibilities in that role. She was later transferred to Naval Air Station Pensacola, and then to Boston. Vieau met and married her husband, Vee, who was a Navy flight instructor. She was discharged after the war ended.

Oral History Interview with Archie Roberts, March 17, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Archie Roberts. Roberts joined the Army in 1943. He was trained on the 240mm howitzer, and worked in the command center of the artillery operation in the 270th Field Artillery Battalion. They deployed to England, and participated in the pre-invasion of Normandy in June of 1944. They advanced into Belgium, participating in the Battle of the Bulge. Roberts returned to the US and was discharged in late 1945.
