Oral History Interview with Bill Marten, February 4, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Bill Marten. Marten joined the Merchant Marine in November 1943. He started as a fireman working as a water tender in the engine room. Marten describes some of his service on tankers crossing the Atlantic. He details an incident where he witnesses another tanker in his convoy explode after it was hit by a torpedo. Marten took part in 12 voyages and eventually left the Merchant Marine in 1948.

Oral History Interview with Barbara Burton, March 4, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Barbara Burton. Upon graduation from high school, Burton completed nursing school in 1947 at the University of California. Burton gives detail of civilian life during World War II. She talks about being in Los Angeles on August 15th and the celebration in the streets. After college she became a civilian Navy employee and took a position in the Aleutian Islands in 1947, working for the dispersing officer in the supply department. She provides details of her experiences there. Burton completed her work in 1950. Towards the end of her interview she gives much information about her husband’s experiences in World War II and 32 years in the Navy, James Fred Imlay.

Oral History Interview with P. A. Penley, April 4, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with P.A. Penley. Penley joined the Army in 1942. He studied mechanical engineering at several universities before becoming an infantryman. Penley joined the 66th Infantry Division and was sent to Europe. He mentions a submarine attack on the convoy during the voyage to France that resulted in the loss of over 700 of his fellow soldiers. Penley served as a jeep driver in a weapons company and describes the bitter cold he encountered. He details coming under attack by German artillery. Penley discusses the celebration that occurred when news of the German surrender spread. He participated in the Occupation and was discharged in March of 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Edward Campbell. Campbell joined the Army Air Forces in late 1943. He completed gunnery school. He served as a B-24 turret gunner with the 394th Bomb Squadron. He completed 50 combat missions, over Tarawa, Borneo, bombing oil fields, refineries and ports. He returned to the US and received his discharge in 1945.

Oral History Interview with Walter Wier, November 4, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Walter Wier. Wier joined the Navy in June, 1942 and trained at San Diego. With training complete, Wier was assigned to the Armed Guard and board the SS Day Star (1939) in San Francisco. Wier’s son provides a chronology of Wier’s first cruise in the Pacific starting in early 1943. After one voyage aboard the Day Star, he was transferred to the Young America. His third voyage was aboard the William H Moody. Wier sailed in the Pacific and the Atlantic facing Japanese and Germans. He also served aboard the Alexander Hamilton, the Joshua Tree and the Thaddeus S C Lowe. He returned to the US and was discharged in October, 1945.
