Oral History Interview with Louis Justin, November 22, 2015

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Louis Justin. Justin volunteered for service in the Army Air Forces in March, 1943 and took the photography course in Denver. He went overseas to Tinian in November, 1944 where he worked in the photo lab developing images. On Tinian, he developed the film from the Enola Gay. After the war, Young returned to the US in January and received his discharge in February. Justin has some help during the interview from his daughter.

Oral History Interview with Robert Rackerby, November 16, 2015

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Robert Rackerby. Rackerby joined the Marine Corps in February 1943 and trained in San Diego, then went to radio school at Texas A&M. He went overseas to Green Island and was attached to Marine Aircraft Group 14 (MAG-14). Rackerby served in the photography section and processed film. He remained there for a year before moving to the Philippines. Rackerby returned to the US in May, 1945 to prepare for the invasion of Japan with Marine Aircraft Group 51, but the war ended. Rackerby was discharged in November 1945. He used the GI Bill to attend university.

Oral History Interview with Bill Feltner, November 2, 2015

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Bill Feltner. Feltner was born in Combs, Kentucky in 1921. He joined the Army in 1940 and completed basic training, then entered radio school. After a stint as a battalion communications chief, he was sent to Fort Drum, New York to set up a communications school followed by Officer Candidate School at Fort Hood, Texas. Commissioned in 1943, he was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia as a battalion communications officer. In 1944 he was sent to Mindanao as an infantry platoon leader with the 124th Infantry. Later, he was sent to Korea as a military advisor and was wounded. Feltner retired in 1961 as a lieutenant colonel.

Oral History Interview with Mack Roberson, November 9, 2015

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Mack Roberson. Roberson was born in Three Rivers, Texas in 1926. After attending Schreiner Institute in Kerrville, Texas for several semesters, he joined the US Marine Corps and received boot training as San Diego. Upon completion, he accepted an assignment to train for honor guard duties. In 1944, he was aboard a troop ship bound for Okinawa and he tells of some of his experience aboard ship. He recalls observing kamikazes hitting US ships in Buckner Bay. He also comments on the Baka bomb. Recalling the destruction he observed at Hiroshima, he questions the decision to drop the atomic bomb. He also describes his interaction with the Japanese people. He fondly remembers his personal experience with Admiral Nimitz and expresses his admiration.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Robert Archer. Archer entered the Navy in September 1943. He completed basic in Farragut, Idaho and Bremerton, Washington. From Washington he made two trips to Hawaii and the Marshall Islands. He was aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard CV-31, serving as a fireman. He was aboard during the Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns. He was discharged December 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with James Reynolds. Reynolds has some assistance from his daughter during the interview. Reynolds joined the Navy in September 1943 and was in a construction battalion working at Manus in the Admiralty Islands. Reynolds was discharged in December 1945.

Oral History Interview with Clifford Kantz, November 10, 2015

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Clifford Kantz. Mrs. Marion Kantz assists with the interview. Kantz entered the US Army Air Forces October 1941. He received training at Sheppard Field, Texas and served as a flight officer flying B-24s. He went on to Fort Benning and served as a C-47 pilot. Kantz became an aircraft commander in the 100th Troop Carrier Squadron, towing and dropping gliders and paratroopers. They were stationed in Nottingham, England. When the war was over they brought many French POWs out of Germany back to France. They also took supplies to the front for the American troops, and brought out the wounded. He came back to the States in October 1945, and remained on active duty until 1963 when he retired. After the military he became a teacher.

Oral History Interview with William Osteen, November 17, 2015

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with William Osteen. Osteen was drafted into the Army April 29, 1942. He was in Company D, 182nd Infantry Regiment of the 23rd Infantry (Americal) Division. He completed basic training in California. He worked some with machine guns, though primarily as a mechanic in D Company. His company shipped out of Fort Ord on a Norwegian freighter to Guadalcanal, and helped with clean up after the main battle was over. From there they spent a year in Bougainville, arriving in November 1943. They held the perimeter and participated in the Battle for Hill 260. From there they took an LST to Leyte, Philippines, carrying tanks and trucks to secure the island. And, then on to Yokohama, Japan continuing with clean up. He was discharged in Seattle Washington in 1945. He used his G.I. Bill to go to school, learning auto mechanics and welding, and took a job as a blacksmith.
