Oral History Interview with Seserino Calderon, November 10, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Seserino Calderon. Calderon was drafted into the Army in September, 1942 and trained in California. He was trained and assigned to the 161st Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division and sent to Guadalcanal in late 1942. He served as a 60mm mortar man. After a brief invasion of Munda to take an airfield, Calderon enjoyed some rest at New Zealand before the invasion of the Philippines. His unit landed at Lingayen Gulf on Luzon. Calderon returned to the US and was discharged in November, 1945.

Oral History Interview with Gus Cargile, March 10, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Gus Cargile. Cargile entered the Navy as an aviation cadet in May 1942. After graduation in August 1943 he took a Marine commission. Cargile trained in Georgia, Kansas, Texas and Florida before he became an instructor. He taught bombing, shooting and night flying in Florida and Texas. He flew the SNV in basic and a North American SNJ in advanced, and went on to fly the F4U Corsair, F6F, F7F, SBD. He made landings on the USS Guadalcanal (CVE-60). He was discharged as captain in September 1946 and went into the Reserves.

Oral History Interview with Ken Coonrod, June 10, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Ken Coonrod. Coonrod joined the Navy in the fall of 1944. He served as an Electrician’s Mate Third Class in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. In late 1944, Coonrod was assigned to the Philippines. In mid-1945, he traveled to Okinawa, in preparation for the invasion of Japan. He was assigned to an LCVP just before the war ended. Coorod was transferred to Nagoya, Japan, and served with occupation forces aboard USS Littlehales (AGS-7). He returned to the US and received his discharge in 1946.

Oral History Interview with Everett Dyer, December 10, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Everett Dyer. Dyer was born in Bristol, Vermont on 23 March 1918 into a family of six children. After receiving his diploma from high school he attended the University of Houston and graduated in 1941. Upon being drafted in 1941, he was sent to Camp Roberts, California for basic training. After completing infantry training he went to Fort Lewis, Washington to join the 41st Infantry Division Headquarters as an aide to General Horace Fuller. In April the division went aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth for a nineteen day voyage to Sydney, Australia. Upon his arrival he was assigned to the headquarters operations staff (G-3) responsible for preparing casualty reports. During January 1943 the division participated in the battle of Buna, Gona on New Guinea and Dyer comments on the high casualties suffered. He recalls making an amphibious landing at Hollandia by lifeboat in April 1944 and being strafed by Japanese planes while on the beach. He also witnessed attacks by Japanese kamikazes on ships in the bay. Dyer was a member of the retinue that greeted General McArthur as he came ashore. While on Biak, he developed typhus, resulting …

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with George Englebrecht. Englebrecht joined the Merchant Marine in 1944. He served in the engine room aboard tankers and was in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans during WWII. He shares several anecdotes about his merchant seaman experiences and illustrates several comparisons between the Merchant Marine and the Navy.

Oral History Interview with Milford Lee, October 10, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Milford Lee. After high school, Lee performed in a traveling big band. Once the war started, he became a draftsman at Boeing and took the aviation cadet exam. In January 1943 he began flight training, earning his wings that fall. He served as a P-38 fighter escort and group leader over Ploiesti. He details the protocol for conducting large raids, from briefing to debriefing, describing intense antiaircraft fire over the target. In Southern France, his plane was experimentally modified to carry 3,000 pounds' worth of bombs. In the fall of 1944, Lee was recruited for an Army big band that traveled to remote bases and emergency landing strips. While performing in the Balkans, he was captivated by a Partisan commander, later revealed to be Tito. After 56 missions, Lee was rotated to the States and in November 1945 was discharged. He went on to earn a doctorate in nuclear physics and joined a small research team that revolutionized fiber-optic communication.

Oral History Interview with Walter Neumann, October 10, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Walter Neumann. Neumann joined the Navy in April, 1944 and trained at Great Lakes. He attended radio school before reporting aboard YMS-231. They were just getting underway in the Pacific when the war ended. They shaped course for Japan to work minesweeping duties during the occupation. He was discharged I n1947 but stayed in the active reserves.

Oral History Interview with Philip Schneiderman, April 10, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Philip Schneiderman. Schneiderman joined the Coast Guard in 1944 when he was 15 years old because he was able to get the doctor to waive him as a result of procuring a set of tires for the doctor. He was shipped to New Guinea to catch his ship and was in the hospital with a tropical disease when his ship came in. He snuck out of the Navy hospital to join his ship. He shares several anecdotes about life aboard an LST in the Pacific during WWII. He recalls going to Luzon and Okinawa as well as other points around New Guinea landing supplies and equipment. He was discharged in May 1946.

Oral History Interview with Ralph Sparks, April 10, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Ralph Sparks. Sparks was drafted into the Army in 1943 and for part of basic training, they went to North Dakota to harvest a bumper wheat crop. He then trained in field artillery before heading for France in July, 1944. Sparks served as a forward observer around Metz. He also recalls moving into Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. Sparks recalls a story where his unit raided a wine cellar. When the war ended, Sparks made his way back to the US and was discharged in December, 1945.
