Final Technical Report

This is a collaborative proposal that aims to establish theoretical foundations and computational tools that enable uncertainty quantification (UQ) in tightly coupled atomistic-to-continuum multiscale simulations. The program emphasizes the following three research thrusts: 1. UQ and its propagation in atomistic simulations, whether through intrusive or nonintrusive approaches; 2. Extraction of macroscale observables from atomistic simulations and propagation across scales; and 3. Uncertainty quantification and propagation in continuum simulations for macroscale properties tightly coupled with instantaneous states of the atomistic systems. Thus, the project offers to enable the use of multiscale multiphysics simulations as predictive design tools for complex systems.

Housing for Persons Living with HIV/AIDS (open access)

Housing for Persons Living with HIV/AIDS

This report describes recent research that shows how housing and health status are related and the effects of stable housing on patient health. It also describes the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program, the only federal program that provides housing and services specifically for persons who are HIV positive or who have AIDS, together with their families. In addition, the report describes how a small portion of funds appropriated through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS program may be used by states and local jurisdictions to provide short-term housing assistance for persons living with HIV/AIDS.

Troubled Asset Relief Program: Treasury Sees Some Returns as It Exits Programs and Continues to Fund Mortgage Programs

A letter report issued by the Government Accountability Office with an abstract that begins "As of September 30, 2012, the Department of the Treasury (Treasury) was managing assets totaling $63.2 billion in nonmortgage-related Troubled Asset Relief Programs (TARP). As of this date, Treasury had exited 4 of the 10 nonmortgage-related programs, and in December 2012 Treasury announced the exit from a fifth program--the American International Group (AIG) Investment Program. Exactly when Treasury will exit the remaining five programs remains uncertain. Treasury has identified several factors that will affect its decisions. For example,"

Assessing the Importance and Impact of Glycomics and Glycosciences Phase II (open access)

Assessing the Importance and Impact of Glycomics and Glycosciences Phase II

Glycans form one of the four basic classes of macromolecules in living systems, along with nucleic acids, proteins, and lipids. They are composed of individual sugar units that can be linked to one another in multiple ways, enabling them to form complex three-dimensional structures. In living systems, glycans are involved in myriad processes that are part of normal cellular physiology, development, and signaling, as well as in the development of both chronic and infectious diseases. Because of their ubiquity on cell surfaces, they are key components of biological interfaces and are involved in molecular recognition and signaling. They are also important molecules in cell adhesion and cell movement. Meanwhile, glycans on proteins inside cells participate in the cell’s responses to incoming signals, for example by helping to modulate gene expression and protein functions. Glycan polymers such as cellulose are important components of plant cell walls. Understanding how such walls are assembled and how they can be deconstructed is fundamental to basic plant biology, but also in the development of applications such as efficient conversion of biomass into fuels. Glycan polymers derived from plants and other organisms can also serve as sources of new materials with wide-ranging applications from tissue engineering …
