It is resting on one side of the casing and has the bellows extended. There is a little platform with a kickstand beneath it to support the weight and hold the lens level. There is also a handle on the top side of the casing.

Two photographs of a surveying transit tool from the Byrd Williams Family Photography Collection, held by UNT Special Collections. The first image is of the tool alone, pointing to the distance at an angle so that a majority of the parts are visible. It is made out of a bronze material with glass parts and it is attached to a wooden base. The second image is of the tool and the box that it is stored it. The box has leather on the outside and straps and buckles with metal attachments. It is clearly old and has aged and fraying spots.
