Plasma Wakefield Experiments at FACET (open access)

Plasma Wakefield Experiments at FACET

FACET, the Facility for Advanced Accelerator and Experimental Tests, is a new facility being constructed in sector 20 of the SLAC linac primarily to study beam driven plasma wakefield acceleration beginning in summer 2011. The nominal FACET parameters are 23GeV, 3nC electron bunches compressed to {approx}20{micro}m long and focused to {approx}10{micro}m wide. The intense fields of the FACET bunches will be used to field ionize neutral lithium or cesium vapor produced in a heat pipe oven. Previous experiments at the SLAC FFTB facility demonstrated 50GeV/m gradients in an 85cm field ionized lithium plasma where the interaction distance was limited by head erosion. Simulations indicate the lower ionization potential of cesium will decrease the rate of head erosion and increase single stage performance. The initial experimental program will compare the performance of lithium and cesium plasma sources with single and double bunches. Later experiments will investigate improved performance with a pre-ionized cesium plasma. The status of the experiments and expected performance are reviewed. The FACET Facility is being constructed in sector 20 of the SLAC linac primarily to study beam driven plasma wakefield acceleration. The facility will begin commissioning in summer 2011 and conduct an experimental program over the coming five …

Cross Sections for the Reactions e+e to K+ K- pi+pi-, K+ K- pi0pi0, and K+ K- K+ K- Measured Using Initial-State Radiation (open access)

Cross Sections for the Reactions e+e to K+ K- pi+pi-, K+ K- pi0pi0, and K+ K- K+ K- Measured Using Initial-State Radiation

We study the processes e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}-{gamma}, K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{gamma}, and K{sup +}K{sup -}K{sup +}K{sup -}{gamma}, where the photon is radiated from the initial state. About 84000, 8000, and 4200 fully reconstructed events, respectively, are selected from 454 fb{sup -1} of BABAR data. The invariant mass of the hadronic final state defines the e{sup +}e{sup -} center-of-mass energy, so that the K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{gamma} data can be compared with direct measurements of the e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} reaction. No direct measurements exist for the e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} or e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}K{sup +}K{sup -} reactions, and we present an update of our previous result with doubled statistics. Studying the structure of these events, we find contributions from a number of intermediate states, and extract their cross sections. In particular, we perform a more detailed study of the e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} {phi}(1020){pi}{pi}{gamma} reaction, and confirm the presence of the Y (2175) resonance in the {phi}(1020)f{sub 0}(980) and K{sup +}K{sup -} f{sub 0}(980) modes. In the charmonium region, we observe the J/{psi} in all three final states and …

Measurement of the Mass and Width of the Ds1(2536)+ Meson (open access)

Measurement of the Mass and Width of the Ds1(2536)+ Meson

The decay width and mass of the D{sub s1}(2536){sup +} meson are measured via the decay channel D{sub s1}{sup +} {yields} D*{sup +} K{sub S}{sup 0} using 385 fb{sup -1} of data recorded with the BABAR detector in the vicinity of the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The result for the decay width is {Gamma}(D{sub s1}{sup +}) = 0.92 {+-} 0.03 (stat.) {+-} 0.04 (syst.)MeV. For the mass, a value of m(D{sub s1}{sup +}) = 2535.08 {+-} 0.01 (stat.) {+-} 0.15 (syst.)MeV/c{sup 2} is obtained. The mass difference between the D{sub s1}{sup +} and the D*{sup +} is measured to be m(D{sub s1}{sup +})-m(D*{sup +}) = 524.83 {+-} 0.01 (stat.) {+-} 0.04 (syst.)MeV/c{sup 2}, representing a significant improvement compared to the current world average. The unnatural spin-parity assignment for the D{sub s1}{sup +} meson is confirmed.

Measurement of $D^0-overline{D}^0$ mixing parameters using $D^0 \to K_S^0 \pi^ \pi^-$ and $D^0 \to K_S^0 K^ K^-$ decays (open access)

Measurement of $D^0-overline{D}^0$ mixing parameters using $D^0 \to K_S^0 \pi^ \pi^-$ and $D^0 \to K_S^0 K^ K^-$ decays

We report a direct measurement of D{sup 0}-{bar D}{sup 0} mixing parameters through a time-dependent amplitude analysis of the Dalitz plots of D{sup 0} {yields} K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} and, for the first time, D{sup 0} {yields} K{sub S}{sup 0}K{sup +}K{sup -} decays. The low-momentum pion {pi}{sub s}{sup +} in the decay D*{sup +} {yields} D{sup 0}{pi}{sub s}{sup +} identifies the flavor of the neutral D meson at its production. Using 468.5 fb{sup -1} of e{sup +}e{sup -} colliding-beam data recorded near {radical}s = 10.6 GeV by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy collider at SLAC, we measure the mixing parameters x = [1.6 {+-} 2.3 (stat.) {+-} 1.2 (syst.) {+-} 0.8 (model)] x 10{sup -3}, and y = [5.7 {+-} 2.0 (stat.) {+-} 1.3 (syst.) {+-} 0.7 (model)] x 10{sup -3}. These results provide the best measurement to date of x and y. The knowledge of the value of x, in particular, is crucial for understanding the origin of mixing.

Search for CP Violation using $T$-odd Correlations in $D^0 \to K^+ K^- \pi^+ \pi^-$ Decays (open access)

Search for CP Violation using $T$-odd Correlations in $D^0 \to K^+ K^- \pi^+ \pi^-$ Decays

We search for CP violation in a sample of 4.7 x 10{sup 4} Cabibbo suppressed D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} decays. We use 470 fb{sup -1} of data recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} storage rings running at center-of-mass energies near 10.6 GeV. CP violation is searched for in the difference between the T-odd asymmetries, obtained using triple product correlations, measured for D{sup 0} and {bar D}{sup 0} decays. The measured CP violation parameter is A{sub T} = (1.0 {+-} 5.1{sub stat} {+-} 4.4{sub syst}) x 10{sup -3}.

Evidence for Direct CP Violation in the Measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa Angle gamma with B-+ to D(*) K(*)-+ Decays (open access)

Evidence for Direct CP Violation in the Measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa Angle gamma with B-+ to D(*) K(*)-+ Decays

We report the measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa CP-violating angle {gamma} through a Dalitz plot analysis of neutral D meson decays to K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} and K{sub S}{sup 0} K{sup +}K{sup -} produced in the processes B{sup {-+}} {yields} DK{sup {-+}}, B{sup {-+}} {yields} D* K{sup {-+}} with D* {yields} D{pi}{sup 0}, D{gamma}, and B{sup {-+}} {yields} DK*{sup {-+}} with K*{sup {-+}} {yields} K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup {-+}}, using 468 million B{bar B} pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} collider at SLAC. We measure {gamma} = (68 {+-} 14 {+-} 4 {+-} 3){sup o} (modulo 180{sup o}), where the first error is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third reflects the uncertainty in the description of the neutral D decay amplitudes. This result is inconsistent with {gamma} = 0 (no direct CP violation) with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations.
