243Am + 48Ca: A Second Look at the Rf/Db Data Set (open access)

243Am + 48Ca: A Second Look at the Rf/Db Data Set

In December of 2005 a series of experiments were performed at the U400 Cyclotron at the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions in Dubna, Russia, using the reaction {sup 243}Am ({sup 48}Ca,3n) {sup 288}115 which, after a sequence of five alpha decays, produces a long-lived ({approx}1d) fission activity that had been detected previously in experiments using the Dubna Gas Filled Recoil Separator (DGFRS). These experiments were attempts to establish the elemental identity of the fissioning species as dubnium (element 105), which in turn confirms the identity of the original parent nucleus as element 115 through genetic correlation of the subsequent alpha decays. A series of approximately 24-hour bombardments were followed by chemical separations designed to isolate the Group Four and Five chemical fractions, and then separate the Nb and Ta fractions, which are Group Five homologues of dubnium and should therefore behave chemically similar. The samples were prepared for alpha and fission measurement and counted for an extended period of time. Fission events were detected in the Ta-like fractions only, which correspond to the fission coming from either the {sup 268}Db isotope directly or long-lived electron-capture decay in {sup 268}Db followed by a short half-life fission of {sup 268}Rf. In May …

Absolute bunch length measurements by incoherent radiation fluctuation analysis (open access)

Absolute bunch length measurements by incoherent radiation fluctuation analysis

By analyzing the pulse to pulse intensity fluctuations of the radiation emitted by a charge particle in the incoherent part of the spectrum, it is possible to extract information about the spatial distribution of the beam. At the Advanced Light Source (ALS) of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, we have developed and successfully tested a simple scheme based on this principle that allows for the absolute measurement of the rms bunch length. A description of the method and the experimental results are presented.

Analysis of Capillary Guided Laser Plasma Accelerator Experiments at LBNL (open access)

Analysis of Capillary Guided Laser Plasma Accelerator Experiments at LBNL

Laser wakefield acceleration experiments were carried out by using a hydrogen-filledcapillary discharge waveguide. For a 15 mm long, 200 mu m diameter capillary, quasi-monoenergetic e-beams up to 300 MeV were observed. By de-tuning discharge delay from optimum guiding performance, self-trapping was found to be stabilized. For a 33 mm long, 300 mu m capillary, a parameter regime with high energy electron beams, up to 1 GeV, was found. In this regime, the electron beam peak energy was correlated with the amount of trapped electrons.

Annual Hanford Seismic Report for Fiscal Year 2008 (open access)

Annual Hanford Seismic Report for Fiscal Year 2008

The Hanford Seismic Assessment Program (HSAP) provides an uninterrupted collection of high-quality raw and processed seismic data from the Hanford Seismic Network for the U.S. Department of Energy and its contractors. The HSAP is responsible for locating and identifying sources of seismic activity and monitoring changes in the historical pattern of seismic activity at the Hanford Site. The data are compiled, archived, and published for use by the Hanford Site for waste management, natural phenomena hazards assessments, and engineering design and construction. In addition, the HSAP works with the Hanford Site Emergency Services Organization to provide assistance in the event of a significant earthquake on the Hanford Site. The Hanford Seismic Network and the Eastern Washington Regional Network consist of 44 individual sensor sites and 15 radio relay sites maintained by the Hanford Seismic Assessment Team. During fiscal year 2008, the Hanford Seismic Network recorded 1431 triggers on the seismometer system, which included 112 seismic events in the southeast Washington area and an additional 422 regional and teleseismic events. There were 74 events determined to be local earthquakes relevant to the Hanford Site. The highest-magnitude event (3.7 Mc) occurred on May 18, 2008, and was located approximately 17 km east …

Annual Report for the TDMAA LDRD, FY08 (open access)

Annual Report for the TDMAA LDRD, FY08

TDMAA provides a framework for cooperative cyber defense for groups of interdependent enclaves via a society of humans and autonomous adaptive software agents. The enclaves in an infrastructure share common overarching operational goals and may share physical equipment, but generally they do not share policies, etc. Examples of this type of infrastructure include the computers and networks supporting our national electric power grid, the distributed, heterogeneous computing collaboratories used in open science, or the computer equipment used to support partner countries in coalition warfare. We seek to discover ways that humans can exert supervisory influence on the system while retaining the rapid, adaptive response of the system.
