DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNOLOGIES AND ANALYTICAL CAPABILITIES FOR VISION 21 ENERGY PLANTS

DOE Vision 21 project requirements for the support of Global CAPE-OPEN Reaction Kinetics interfaces in Aspen Plus 12 was written (Task 2.4). The software design document was written and posted on the project web site. Intergraph started work on a proof of concept demo of the physical domain software (Task 2.6). The COM-side (Aspen Plus) and CORBA-side (Fluent) pieces of the Vision 21 controller code were written and independently verified. The two pieces of the code were then combined. Debugging of the combined code is underway (Task 2.7). Papers on fuel cell processes were read in preparation for developing an example based on a fuel cell process (Task 2.8). The INDVU code has been used to replace the boiler component in the Aspen Plus flowsheet of the RP&L power plant. The INDVU code receives information from Aspen Plus and iterates on the split backpass LTSH bypass and excess air quantities until the stipulated superheat outlet temperature is satisfied. The combined INDVU-Aspen Plus model has been run for several load conditions (Task 2.14). Work on identifying a second demonstration case involving an advanced power cycle has been started (Task 3.2). Plans for the second Advisory Board meeting in November were made …

MAPPING INDUCED POLARIZATION WITH NATURAL ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS FOR EXPLORATION AND RESOURCES CHARACTERIZATION BY THE MINING INDUSTRY (open access)

MAPPING INDUCED POLARIZATION WITH NATURAL ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS FOR EXPLORATION AND RESOURCES CHARACTERIZATION BY THE MINING INDUSTRY

In this quarter we completed the field test of the first two prototypes of the MT-24/LF. Two prototypes were deployed in Japan as land remote reference systems during a marine MT survey. The two systems acquired data continuously for about two weeks. Data processing is in progress. The IP Target Test Area has been selected. The complete survey will be conducted in Arizona Safford-Sol prospect owned by Kennecott. This is a large porphyry copper with a significant IP response. Finally the Acquisition software has been completed.

X-Ray Spectropolarimetry Studies at the Nevada Terawatt Facility and LLNL EBIT (open access)

X-Ray Spectropolarimetry Studies at the Nevada Terawatt Facility and LLNL EBIT

Recent results from x-pinches at the NTF provide experimental evidence for the existence of strong electron beams in x-pinch plasmas and motivate the development of a new diagnostic, x-ray spectropolarimetry, for investigating the anisotropy of such plasmas. This diagnostic is based on theoretical modeling of polarization-dependent spectra measured simultaneously by spectrometers with different sensitivity to polarization. Results of the first polarization-sensitive experiments at the NTF are presented. K-shell emission from Ti x-pinches is recorded simultaneously by two identical spectrometers with the dispersion plane perpendicular and parallel to the discharge axis. The spectroscopic analysis of more than eight Ti x-pinch shots show how spectropolarimetry complements the usual diagnostics of a z-pinch plasma. The polarization-sensitive spectra, generated by a Maxwellian electron beam at LLNL EBIT have been collected and analyzed. These data make an important contribution to the plasma polarization spectroscopy program at the NTF. In particular, the study of multiply-charged Ti ion spectra help in the interpretation of the polarization-sensitive spectra from Ti x-pinches at the NTF.
