Application Software Structure Enables NIF Operations (open access)

Application Software Structure Enables NIF Operations

The NIF Integrated Computer Control System (ICCS) application software uses a set of service frameworks that assures uniform behavior spanning the front-end processors (FEPs) and supervisor programs. This uniformity is visible both in the way each program employs shared services and in the flexibility it affords for attaching graphical user interfaces (GUIs). Uniformity of structure across applications is desired for the benefit of programmers who will be maintaining the many programs that constitute the ICCS. In this paper, the framework components that have the greatest impact on the application structure are discussed.

An approach for dealing with large errors. (open access)

An approach for dealing with large errors.

Numerical functions or equivalent algorithms are commonly used to derive estimates for physical quantities that can be expressed in terms of more fundamental physical parameters. It is shown that in situations where large uncertainties (errors) are involved in these parameters, or where error amplification occurs through severe non-linearity of the functions, conventional deterministic techniques for calculating the derived quantities and estimating their errors can lead to erroneous results. Instead, it is necessary to resort to a probabilistic approach and thereby obtain estimates for mean values and variances of the derived quantities through Monte Carlo simulation in order to preserve the essential information without distortion. The correct choice for a probability distribution is suggested by the inherent nature of the random variable in question. Examples are given from the analysis of radioactivity decay, the shielding of penetrating radiation, and the derivation of nuclear reaction rates that are used in astrophysical calculations to model nucleosynthesis of the elements in stellar explosions. Subsequent analyses that use these derived quantities must also be carried out in a probabilistic manner to insure that the obtained results will reflect the underlying information properly.

Coast Guard: Update on Marine Information for Safety and Law Enforcement System

A letter report issued by the General Accounting Office with an abstract that begins "The Marine Information for Safety and Law Enforcement system is an information system to track marine safety and law-enforcement activities involving commercial and recreational vessels. In 1999, after spending about four years and $26 million, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) terminated a contract to acquire the system and will instead develop the system at its operation systems center. USCG has made progress in developing the system and was ready to deploy a minimum level of functionality in November 2001. However, USCG faces significant challenges and risks in several areas, including managing system requirements and user expectations, testing the system, moving to an operational system, and managing program risks."

Combating Terrorism: Considerations for Investing Resources in Chemical and Biological Preparedness (open access)

Combating Terrorism: Considerations for Investing Resources in Chemical and Biological Preparedness

Testimony issued by the General Accounting Office with an abstract that begins "Since the attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the terrorist threat has risen to the top of the national agenda. Preparing for all possible contingencies is impractical, so a risk management approach should be used. This would include a threat assessment to determine which chemical or biological agents are of greatest concern. The federal government has various programs to prepare for and respond to chemical and biological terrorism, including response teams, support laboratories, training and equipment programs, and research efforts. Evaluations of chemical and biological preparedness have identified several problems and their solutions. Congress faces competing demands for spending as it seeks to invest resources to better prepare our nation for chemical and biological terrorism. Given the uncertainty of the chemical and biological threat, Congress may want to initially invest resources in efforts with broad applicability rather than in those that are applicable to a specific type of chemical or biological attack."

Decontamination of Dissolved Salt Solution from Tank 19F Using Duolite CS-100 and Amberlite IRC-718 Resins (open access)

Decontamination of Dissolved Salt Solution from Tank 19F Using Duolite CS-100 and Amberlite IRC-718 Resins

In this study actual Savannah River Plant liquid supernate solutions were processed to refine and verify these synthetic solution studies. The main objectives were: (1) confirm high decontamination factors (DFs) for cesium-137 and strontium-90 using Duolite CS-100 and Amberlite IRC-718 ion exchange resins, (2) obtain DFs for other minor radioactive isotopes such as plutonium, technetium and ruthenium, (3) provide ion exchange elutriant containing cesium-137, strontium-90 and other radioactive isotopes for ''hot'' melter studies, (4) determine the quality of the decontaminated salt solution, and (5) provide actual decontaminated salt solution for saltcrete development programs.

Determination of BWR Spent Nuclear Fuel Assembly Effective Thermal Conductivity (open access)

Determination of BWR Spent Nuclear Fuel Assembly Effective Thermal Conductivity

The purpose of this calculation is to provide an effective thermal conductivity for use in predicting peak cladding temperatures in boiling water reactor (BWR) fuel assemblies with 7x7,8x8, and 9x9 rod arrays. The first objective of this calculation is to describe the development and application of a finite element representation that predicts peak spent nuclear fuel temperatures for BWR assemblies. The second objective is to use the discrete representation to develop a basis for determining an effective thermal conductivity (described later) for a BWR assembly with srneared/homogeneous properties and to investigate the thermal behavior of a spent fuel assembly. The scope of this calculation is limited to a steady-state two-dimensional representation of the waste package interior region. This calculation is subject to procedure AP-3.124, Calculations (Ref. 27) and guided by the applicable technical work plan (Ref. 14). While these evaluations were originally developed for the thermal analysis of conceptual waste package designs emplaced in the potential repository at Yucca Mountain, the methodology applies to storage and transportation thermal analyses as well. Note that the waste package sketch in Attachment V depicts a preliminary design, and should not be interpreted otherwise.
