Egress Shielding Studies for the SNS Accelerator System (open access)

Egress Shielding Studies for the SNS Accelerator System

The radiation transport and dose levels at four egresses located in the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accelerator system were analyzed based on controlled and uncontrolled beam losses in the accelerator system. A six-step hybrid Monte Carlo/Discrete Ordinates approach was employed to solve these problems using the Monte Carlo code MCNPX and the discrete ordinates code DORT along with the coupling tools MTD and DTD. MCNPX served to characterize the generation and leakage of secondary radiation from the accelerator and beam line structures, whereas DORT performed the analyses of the radiation fields (neutrons and gammas) in the accelerator tunnels and walkways of the egress. The coupling tools facilitated generation of the boundary sources from one transport step to the next step. In this effort, large detailed accelerator models were built for MCNPX to properly describe the different types of linac structures, the beam transport and focusing elements (dipoles, quadrupoles, sextupoles) , and the beam collimators. The studies confirmed that the present egress designs were adequate to attenuate the dose in the linac tunnel of up to 100 rem/hr to a level of about 0.5 mrem/hr at the egress exit during normal operation. The egress in the accumulator ring is located at …

NewtonPlus: Approximating Relativistic Effects in Supernova Simulations (open access)

NewtonPlus: Approximating Relativistic Effects in Supernova Simulations

We propose an approximation to full relativity that captures the main gravitational effects of dynamical importance in supernovae. The conceptual link between this formalism and the Newtonian limit is such that it could likely be implemented relatively easily in existing multidimensional Newtonian gravitational hydrodynamics codes employing a Poisson solver. As a test of the formalism's utility, we display results for rapidly rotating (and therefore highly deformed) neutron stars.

Theory of Neutrino Flavor Mixing (open access)

Theory of Neutrino Flavor Mixing

The depth of the authors theoretical understanding of neutrino flavor mixing should match the importance of this phenomenon as a herald of long-awaited empirical challenges to the standard model of particle physics. After reviewing the familiar, simplified quantum mechanical model and its flaws, the author sketches the deeper understanding of both vacuum and matter-enhanced flavor mixing that is found in the framework of scattering theory. While the model simplified gives the correct answer for atmospheric, solar, and accelerator/reactor neutrino phenomena, he argues that a key insight from the deeper picture will simplify the treatment of neutrino transport in astrophysical environments--supernovae, for example--in which neutrinos play a dynamically important role.

Urban Wood/Coal Co-Firing in the Bellefield Boilerplant (open access)

Urban Wood/Coal Co-Firing in the Bellefield Boilerplant

During the third quarter, important preparatory work was continued so that the experimental activities can begin early in the fourth quarter. Authorization was awaited in response to the letter that was submitted to the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) seeking an R&D variance for the air permit at the Bellefield Boiler Plant (BBP). Verbal authorizations were received from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) for R&D variances for solid waste permits at the J. A. Rutter Company (JARC), and Emery Tree Service (ETS). Construction wood was acquired from Thompson Properties and Seven D Corporation. Forty tons of pallet and construction wood were ground to produce BioGrind Wood Chips at JARC and delivered to Mon Valley Transportation Company (MVTC). Five tons of construction wood were milled at ETS and half of the product delivered to MVTC. Discussions were held with BBP and Energy Systems Associates (ESA) about the test program. Material and energy balances on Boiler No.1 and a plan for data collection were prepared. Presentations describing the University of Pittsburgh Wood/Coal Co-Firing Program were provided to the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, and the Upgraded Coal Interest Group and the Biomass Interest Group (BIG) of …

Cermet Transport, Storage, and Disposal Packages Using Depleted Uranium Dioxide and Steel (open access)

Cermet Transport, Storage, and Disposal Packages Using Depleted Uranium Dioxide and Steel

It is proposed that the steel components of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) storage casks, transport casks, and repository waste packages (WPs) be replaced with a depleted uranium dioxide (DUO{sub 2})-steel cermet consisting of DUO{sub 2} particulates embedded in a continuous-steel phase. Typical cermets use a sandwich-type construction with clean uncontaminated steel layers on both sides of the cermet. Cermets have several potential advantages over other materials of construction: (1) better gamma and neutron shielding than steel; (2) ability to withstand extreme conditions (fire, accident, sabotage); (3) potential to improve repository performance when used in WPs; and (4) use of excess DUO{sub 2} and recycled steel from nuclear facilities, thereby avoiding disposal costs for these materials. New methods of manufacture and other factors may provide economic incentives for cermet packages when large numbers of casks are manufactured.

Oral History Interview with J. S. Gray, August 21, 2001

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral history with J S Gray. Gray was born in Catahoula Parrish, Louisiana on 14 July 1920. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1937 and after various assignments was shipped to Manila, Philippine Islands, serving in the 27th Bomb Group, 454th Ordnance. Gray tells of the Japanese attack on Clark Field and ultimate surrender of United States forces by General King. He describes conditions encountered during several forced marches, including the Bataan Death March. Gray also discusses internment in Camp O’Donnell and Cabanatuan and the horrific conditions encountered on POW “Hell” ship to Japan. He worked in a copper smelting plant in Yokkaichi. He mentions the sabotage methods used while working in a steel casting plant, kindness extended by two individual Japanese guards, his near death experience from treatment by a guard, and the saving and concealment of the stars cut from an American flag. He details the making of an American flag out of scraps and the retained stars prior to release from the POW camp [the handmade flag is now on display in the museum’s gallery]. When he returned to the United States, he was hospitalized, and then …

Optical Extinction of Sapphire Shock Loaded to 250-260 GPa (open access)

Optical Extinction of Sapphire Shock Loaded to 250-260 GPa

Sapphire, a common optical window material used in shock-compression studies, displays significant shock-induced optical emission and extinction. It is desirable to quantify such non-ideal window behavior to enhance the usefulness of sapphire in optical studies of opaque shock-compressed samples, such as metals. At the highest stresses we can achieve with a two-stage gas gun it is technically very difficult to study the optical properties of sapphire without the aid of some opaque backing material, hence one is invariably compelled to deconvolve the optical effects of the opaque surface and the sapphire. In an effort to optimize this deconvolution process, we have constructed sapphire/thin-film/sapphire samples using two basic types of thin films: one optimized to emit copious optical radiation (the hot-film sample), the other designed to yield minimal emission (the cold-film sample). This sample geometry makes it easy to maintain the same steady shock-stress in the sapphire window (255 GPa in our case) while varying the window/film interface temperature. A six-channel time-resolved optical pyrometer is used to measure the emission from the sample assemblies. Two different sapphire crystal orientations were evaluated. We also comment on finite thermal conductivity effects of the thin-film geometry on the interpretation of our data.

Observation of Dislocation Dynamics in the Electron Microscope (open access)

Observation of Dislocation Dynamics in the Electron Microscope

Deformation experiments performed in-situ in the transmission electron microscope have led to an increased understanding of dislocation dynamics. To illustrate the capability of this technique two examples will be presented. In the first example, the processes of work hardening in Mo at room temperature will be presented. These studies have improved our understanding of dislocation mobility, dislocation generation, and dislocation-obstacle interactions. In the second example, the interaction of matrix dislocations with grain boundaries will be described. From such studies predictive criteria for slip transfer through grain boundaries have been developed.
