Switchyard Enclosure Bolted Connection Calculations (open access)

Switchyard Enclosure Bolted Connection Calculations

The maximum deflection and the maximum stress were calculated for the bolted connection of the flanges. The stress is a result from both the air pressure inside the beam enclosures as well as the force from the compressed p-gasket. The results of the calculations are shown for each of the four beam enclosure types. The Safety Factor was calculated using a yield strength of 41 ksi. Calculations were also performed on the M8 bolts that are used to connect the flanges. Both the internal air pressure and the force of the compressed p-gasket induce the normal stress. The shear stress is from the weight of the unsupported beam enclosure. The calculated maximum stresses and the resulting safety factors are given. The safety factors were calculated using the maximum shear stress hypothesis and a yield strength of 30 ksi.

OHVT Technology Roadmap (open access)

OHVT Technology Roadmap

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Heavy Vehicle Technologies (OHVT) was created in March 1996 to address the public-interest transportation-energy aspects of a set of customers who at that time had been largely unrecognized, namely, the manufacturers, suppliers, and users of heavy transport vehicles (trucks, buses, rail, and inland marine). Previously, the DOE had focused its attention on meeting the needs of the personal-transport-vehicle customer (automobile manufacturers, suppliers, and users). Those of us who were of driving age at the time of the 1973 oil embargo and the 1979 oil price escalation vividly recall the inconvenience and irritation of having to wait in long lines for gasoline to fuel our cars. However, most of us, other than professional truck owners or drivers, were unaware of the impacts that these disruptions in the fuel supply had on those whose livelihoods depend upon the transport of goods. Recognizing the importance of heavy vehicles to the national economic health, the DOE created OHVT with a mission to conduct, in collaboration with its industry partners and their suppliers, a customer-focused national program to research and develop technologies that will enable trucks and other heavy vehicles to be more energy-efficient and able to …

Transient Transport Experiments in the CDX-U Spherical Torus (open access)

Transient Transport Experiments in the CDX-U Spherical Torus

Electron transport has been measured in the Current Drive Experiment-Upgrade (CDX-U) using two separate perturbative techniques. Gas modulation at the plasma edge was used to introduce cold-pulses which propagate towards the plasma center, providing time-of-flight information leading to a determination of chi(subscript e) as a function of radius. Sawteeth at the q=1 radius (r/a {approx} 0.15) induced heat-pulses which propagated outward towards the plasma edge, providing a complementary time-of-flight based chi(subscript e) profile measurement. This work represents the first localized measurement of chi(subscript e) in a spherical torus. It is found that chi(subscript e) = 1-2 meters squared per second in the plasma core (r/a < 1/3), increasing by an order of magnitude or more outside of this region. Furthermore, the chi(subscript e) profile exhibits a sharp transition near r/a = 1/3. Spectral and profile analyses of the soft X-rays, scanning interferometer, and edge probe data show no evidence of a significant magnetic island causing the high chi(subscript e) region.

Use of microPCM fluids as enhanced liquid coolants in automotive EV and HEV vehicles. Final report (open access)

Use of microPCM fluids as enhanced liquid coolants in automotive EV and HEV vehicles. Final report

Proof-of-concept experiments using a specific microPCM fluid that potentially can have an impact on the thermal management of automotive EV and HEV systems have been conducted. Samples of nominally 20-micron diameter microencapsulated octacosane and glycol/water coolant were prepared for testing. The melting/freezing characteristics of the fluid, as well as the viscosity, were determined. A bench scale pumped-loop thermal system was used to determine heat transfer coefficients and wall temperatures in the source heat exchanged. Comparisons were made which illustrate the enhancements of thermal performance, reductions of pumping power, and increases of heat transfer which occur with the microPCM fluid.

Pine Gene Discovery Project - Final Report - 08/31/1997 - 02/28/2001 (open access)

Pine Gene Discovery Project - Final Report - 08/31/1997 - 02/28/2001

Integration of pines into the large scope of plant biology research depends on study of pines in parallel with study of annual plants, and on availability of research materials from pine to plant biologists interested in comparing pine with annual plant systems. The objectives of the Pine Gene Discovery Project were to obtain 10,000 partial DNA sequences of genes expressed in loblolly pine, to determine which of those pine genes were similar to known genes from other organisms, and to make the DNA sequences and isolated pine genes available to plant researchers to stimulate integration of pines into the wider scope of plant biology research. Those objectives have been completed, and the results are available to the public. Requests for pine genes have been received from a number of laboratories that would otherwise not have included pine in their research, indicating that progress is being made toward the goal of integrating pine research into the larger molecular biology research community.
