REFLECTIONS ON THE TWO-STATE ELECTRON TRANSFER MODEL. (open access)

REFLECTIONS ON THE TWO-STATE ELECTRON TRANSFER MODEL.

There is general agreement that the two most important factors determining electron transfer rates in solution are the degree of electronic interaction between the donor and acceptor sites, and the changes in the nuclear configurations of the donor, acceptor, and surrounding medium that occur upon the gain or loss of an electron Ll-51. The electronic interaction of the sites will be very weak, and the electron transfer slow, when the sites are far apart or their interaction is symmetry or spin forbidden. Since electron motion is much faster than nuclear motion, energy conservation requires that, prior to the actual electron transfer, the nuclear configurations of the reactants and the surrounding medium adjust from their equilibrium values to a configuration (generally) intermediate between that of the reactants and products. In the case of electron transfer between , two metal complexes in a polar solvent, the nuclear configuration changes involve adjustments in the metal-ligand and intraligand bond lengths and angles, and changes in the orientations of the surrounding solvent molecules. In common with ordinary chemical reactions, an electron transfer reaction can then be described in terms of the motion of the system on an energy surface from the reactant equilibrium configuration (initial …

CARBON DIOXIDE FIXATION. (open access)

CARBON DIOXIDE FIXATION.

Solar carbon dioxide fixation offers the possibility of a renewable source of chemicals and fuels in the future. Its realization rests on future advances in the efficiency of solar energy collection and development of suitable catalysts for CO{sub 2} conversion. Recent achievements in the efficiency of solar energy conversion and in catalysis suggest that this approach holds a great deal of promise for contributing to future needs for fuels and chemicals.

Prototype house provides test case for energy-efficient systems: Mitchell Homes, Pensacola, Florida; Building America Project summary fact sheet

The Carbelle prototype house is a new design produced under the U.S. Department of Energy's Building America program. Working with other members of the Consortium for Advanced Residential Buildings, Mitchell Homes developed the Carbelle as an energy-efficient upgrade to one of their standard models. By treating all design aspects of the house as a system and involving all stakeholders in the process, Mitchell expects to decrease on-site energy use for space heating and cooling by as much as 40% compared to their typical construction.

Superconductivity and structure in La{sub 2{minus}x}M{sub x}CuO{sub 4}, M=Ba, Sr, and (Nd,Sr) (open access)

Superconductivity and structure in La{sub 2{minus}x}M{sub x}CuO{sub 4}, M=Ba, Sr, and (Nd,Sr)

The identification of charge stripes in La{sub 2{minus}x{minus}y}Nd{sub y}Sr{sub x}CuO{sub 4} (Nd-214) has reenergized research on the original high transition temperature {Tc} superconductor, La{sub 2{minus}x}Ba{sub x}CuO{sub 4} (Ba-214), and related compounds. Early in the study of Ba-214, a low temperature phase transition was associated with changes in electrical properties. An apparent suppression of {Tc} near Ba x=0.125, was initially associated with a first order low temperature phase transformation. However, it was later shown that only very near Ba x=0.125 was {Tc} reduced markedly, and that the relationship between crystal structure and {Tc} is more complicated. This review well describe the low temperature crystal structures and microstructures, as well as the superconducting properties as determined from low field (1-100G) dc magnetometer measurements for Ba-214, Nd-214, and La{sub 2{minus}x}Sr{sub x}CuO{sub 4} (Sr-214). The authors will also describe some work in the related La{sub 2{minus}x}Ca{sub x}CuO{sub 4} (Ca-214). A basic knowledge of the interactions among superconductivity and low temperature phases will allow one to better understand the significance of the underlying charge stripe phases.

Alternative Fuel News: Vol. 3, No. 4

This final issue of the Alternative Fuel News (AFN) for the 20th century provides updates on specific Clean Cities Program progress and provide a glimpse of what is in store for the future. A national nonprofit organization has been part of the Clean Cities vision for some time, and now it is a reality as National Clean Cities, Inc. (NCC). While Clean Cities coalitions have had some success in securing local private foundation funds for alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) projects in their regions, now with the help of NCC, they can tap into the dollars available from large, national foundations. The Clean Cities Game Plan 2000, which is the highlight of the cover story, outlines the strategy for the next year.
