Periodic boundary conditions for dislocation dynamics simulations in three dimensions (open access)

Periodic boundary conditions for dislocation dynamics simulations in three dimensions

This article presents an implementation of periodic boundary conditions (PBC) for Dislocation Dynamics (DD) simulations in three dimensions (3D). We discuss fundamental aspects of PBC development, including preservation of translational invariance and line connectivity, the choice of initial configurations compatible with PBC and a consistent treatment of image stress. On the practical side, our approach reduces to manageable proportions the computational burden of updating the long-range elastic interactions among dislocation segments. The timing data confirms feasibility and practicality of PBC for large-scale DD simulations in 3D.

Final report for''FOSPACK'' (open access)

Final report for''FOSPACK''

The goal of this subcontract was to modify the FOSPACK code, developed by John Ruge, to call the BoomerAMG solver developed at LLNL through the HYPRE interface. FOSPACK is a package developed for the automatic discretization and solution of First-Order System Least-Squares (FOSLS) formulations of 2D partial differential equations (c.f [3-9]). FOSPACK takes a user-specified mesh (which can be an unstructured combination of triangular and quadrilateral elements) and specification of the first-order system, and produces the discretizations needed for solution. Generally, all specifications are contained in data files, so no re-compilation is necessary when changing domains, mesh sizes, problems, etc. Much of the work in FOSPACK has gone into an interpreter that allows for simple, intuitive specification of the equations. The interpreter reads the equations, processes them, and stores them as instruction lists needed to apply the operators involved to finite element basis functions, allowing assembly of the discrete system. Quite complex equations may be specified, including variable coefficients, user defined functions, and vector notation. The first-order systems may be nonlinear, with linearizations either performed automatically, or specified in a convenient way by the user. The program also includes global/local refinement capability. FOSLS formulations are very well suited for solution …

Oral History Interview with Karl Everitt, November 20, 2000 transcript

Oral History Interview with Karl Everitt, November 20, 2000

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Karl Everitt. Everitt joined the Navy in June of 1942. He served aboard the USS Electra (AKA-4), and worked on a salvage boat. They participated in the invasion landings on North Africa. He was transferred to shore in England, and assigned to the USS LST-48. Everitt participated in the Normandy landings. He was then assigned to join the 3rd Army, and participated with them through the Battle of the Bulge. He returned to the US in the spring of 1945, and was discharged in November.

Plutonium/High-Level Vitrified Waste BDBE Dose Calculation (open access)

Plutonium/High-Level Vitrified Waste BDBE Dose Calculation

The purpose of this calculation is to provide a dose consequence analysis of high-level waste (HLW) consisting of plutonium immobilized in vitrified HLW to be handled at the proposed Monitored Geologic Repository at Yucca Mountain for a beyond design basis event (BDBE) under expected conditions using best estimate values for each calculation parameter. In addition to the dose calculation, a plutonium respirable particle size for dose calculation use is derived. The current concept for this waste form is plutonium disks enclosed in cans immobilized in canisters of vitrified HLW (i.e., glass). The plutonium inventory at risk used for this calculation is selected from Plutonium Immobilization Project Input for Yucca Mountain Total Systems Performance Assessment (Shaw 1999). The BDBE examined in this calculation is a nonmechanistic initiating event and the sequence of events that follow to cause a radiological release. This analysis will provide the radiological releases and dose consequences for a postulated BDBE. Results may be considered in other analyses to determine or modify the safety classification and quality assurance level of repository structures, systems, and components. This calculation uses best available technical information because the BDBE frequency is very low (i.e., less than 1.0E-6 events/year) and is not required …
