Continuous, Automated Manufacturing of String Ribbon Si PV Modules: Second Annual Report, 21 May 1999-20 May 2000 (open access)

Continuous, Automated Manufacturing of String Ribbon Si PV Modules: Second Annual Report, 21 May 1999-20 May 2000

This report describes the activities in manufacturing technology and in silicon ribbon characterization that were completed in the second year of a three-year PVMaT subcontract. The focus in this second year has been on capital cost reduction and automation in silicon ribbon growth, automation and process simplification in the cell area, and some automation in the module area. Evergreen has used the capabilities of the Fraunhofer USA Center for Manufacturing Innovation at Boston University for help in factory layout, process flow, and efficient materials flow. Evergreen will be utilizing this as it prepares to move to a multi-megawatt factory in the latter part of 2000. Silicon ribbon characterization work has been provided for us by researchers at NREL. A patent has already been filed on this work, and two more are in preparation. Four papers on different aspects of the work have been or will be presented at various conferences here and abroad. In general, as this report shows, the project is on schedule and the overall goals are being met.

Control and Elimination of Cracking of AlGaN Using Low-Temperature AlGaN Interlayers (open access)

Control and Elimination of Cracking of AlGaN Using Low-Temperature AlGaN Interlayers

We demonstrate that the insertion of low-temperature (LT) AlGaN interlayers is effective in reducing mismatch-induced tensile stress and suppressing the formation of cracks during growth of AlGaN directly upon GaN epilayers., Stress evolution and relaxation is monitored using an in-situ optical stress sensor. The combination of in-situ and ex-situ. characterization techniques enables us to determine the degree of pseudomorphism in the interlayers. It is observed that the elastic tensile mismatch between AlGaN and GaN is mediated by the relaxation of interlayers; the use of interlayers offers tunability in the in-plane lattice parameters.

Design and Simulation Results of Waveguide Bends Used in Debuncher Cooling System (open access)

Design and Simulation Results of Waveguide Bends Used in Debuncher Cooling System

This note is a document about design and simulation results of waveguide bends installed with the arrays in debuncher cooling upgrade. The main feature of these bends is that they are not traditional mitered bends or round bends. Instead, a cylinder is placed in the corner area of the bend. The reason for this design is purely to overcome some practical problems: (1) since these bends are very close to the slotted foil which serves as part of the waveguide array, it is very difficult to make good joint and contact if mitered bends are used, (2) assembly difficulty due to the location of these bends, and (3) limited space requires a compact design. Shown in Figure 1 is a schematic drawing of a bend. Dimensions of bends for each frequency band are listed in Table 1. Shown in Figure 2-5 are the simulation results using HFSS. One of the bends was fabricated with flanges on both ends and measured using a Network Analyzer. The HFSS result was confirmed by the measured data.

Dimensions and Measurements of Debuncher Band 3 and 4 Waveguide-Coax Launchers (open access)

Dimensions and Measurements of Debuncher Band 3 and 4 Waveguide-Coax Launchers

This note is a document about dimensions and measurement results of waveguide-coax launchers (Band 3 and 4) installed on the arrays in debuncher cooling upgrade. Shown in Figure 1 and 5 are schematic drawings of launchers (pick-up) in the cross section along the longitudinal direction (beam direction) of the arrays. The unit in these drawings is inch. Note: although there are upper band and lower band for pickup arrays, the launchers are the same to avoid possible confusion during installation. Launchers for band 3 and 4 kickers were made by Penn-engineering Inc., therefor no schematic drawings are presented in this note. RF Measurements were made on all launchers (port) and printed in hard copies for future reference. Since the measurement results are similar to each other, only a few plots for each type of launcher/band are presented in this document. There are two types of measured S11 parameters. One is the measurement made at the end of design/tuning stage using a launcher and a straight section of band 3 or 4 waveguide terminated with a cone of absorber. I use 'Original' to denote this kind of measurement. As shown in Figure 2, 6, 9 and 12, the original S11 of …

The Hydrograph Analyst, an Arcview GIS Extension That Integrates Point, Spatial, and Temporal Data Provides A Graphical User Interface for Hydrograph Analysis

The Hydrograph Analyst (HA) is an ArcView GIS 3.2 extension developed by the authors to analyze hydrographs from a network of ground-water wells and springs in a regional ground-water flow model. ArcView GIS integrates geographic, hydrologic, and descriptive information and provides the base functionality needed for hydrograph analysis. The HA extends ArcView's base functionality by automating data integration procedures and by adding capabilities to visualize and analyze hydrologic data. Data integration procedures were automated by adding functionality to the View document's Document Graphical User Interface (DocGUI). A menu allows the user to query a relational database and select sites which are displayed as a point theme in a View document. An ''Identify One to Many'' tool is provided within the View DocGUI to retrieve all hydrologic information for a selected site and display it in a simple and concise tabular format. For example, the display could contain various records from many tables storing data for one site. Another HA menu allows the user to generate a hydrograph for sites selected from the point theme. Hydrographs generated by the HA are added as hydrograph documents and accessed by the user with the Hydrograph DocGUI, which contains tools and buttons for hydrograph …

Impact of Degraded RA-3 Fuel Condition on Transportation to and Storage in SRS Basins

Aluminum-clad, aluminum-based spent nuclear fuel from the RA-3 Research and Test Reactor at the CNEA Ezeiza Atomic Center near Buenos Aires, Argentina, presently in wet storage at the Central Storage Facility, contains extensive corrosion and mechanical damage. Plans are being developed to return the fuel to the Savannah River Site in Fall 2000. The condition of the fuel and its impact on shipping, handling, and Basin storage when the fuel is returned to SRS, is discussed in this report.

A Market Assessment of Residential Grid-Tied PV Systems in Colorado: Executive Summary (open access)

A Market Assessment of Residential Grid-Tied PV Systems in Colorado: Executive Summary

This is the Executive Summary of a report that presents research done in response to a decision by the Colorado Governor's Office of Energy Conservation and Management (OEC) and Colorado utility companies to consider making residential grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) systems available in Colorado. The idea was to locate homeowners willing to pay the costs of grid-tied PV (GPV) systems without batteries--$8,000 or $12,000 for a 2- or 3-kilowatt (kW) system, respectively, in 1996. These costs represented two-thirds of the actual installed cost of $6 per watt at that time and assumed the remainder would be subsidized. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and OEC partnered to conduct a market assessment for GPV technology in Colorado. The study encompassed both qualitative and quantitative phases. The market assessment concluded that a market for residential GPV systems exists in Colorado today. That market is substantial enough for companies to successfully market PV systems to Colorado homeowners. These homeowners appear ready to learn more, inform themselves, and actively purchase GPV systems. The present situation is highly advantageous to Colorado's institutions--primarily its state government and its utility companies, and also its homebuilders--if they are ready to move forward on GPV technology.
