Report of the mass mortality of fish and invertebrates resulting from the 1998 El Nino in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. Mortality was linked to a condition of near anoxia caused by a confluence of unusual oceanographic stratification associated with coastal upwelling, algal proliferation, and climatic conditions.
