Characterization of Russian ballistic furnace shells (open access)

Characterization of Russian ballistic furnace shells

The authors received another batch of polystyrene ballistic furnace shells on December 4, 1998. Assigned the batch number of LSC012, it consisted of three cassettes containing 36 shells in each cassette. A group of 27 of the shells were selected for characterization that ranged in diameter from 1880 to 1780 {micro}m. There were two shells with a diameter above 1900 {micro}m, but they were too fragile and did not survive initial handling. For characterization, they examined the shells through a stereo microscope, measured diameter and sphericity on RACI, and weighed a subset of the 27 shells that did not have large particles or polymer shards adhered to the outside in order to calculate wall thickness. They then selected the cleanest and most spherical shells for Sphere Mapping. This batch of shells has about the same physical appearance as the one they documented August 26, 1998. There were some shells with polymer shards adhered to the outside, a few large vacuoles or large particle embedded in the polymer wall, and some with a scattering of small black particles on the outside. There were no swirls in the shell walls. As mentioned in the previous report, each shell is measured with the …

Compound Semiconductor Devices for Low-Power High-Efficiency Radio Frequency Electronics (open access)

Compound Semiconductor Devices for Low-Power High-Efficiency Radio Frequency Electronics

The power consumption of Radio Frequency (RF) electronics is a significant issue for Wireless systems. Since most wireless systems are portable and thus battery operated, reductions in DC power consumption can significantly reduce the weight and/or increase the battery lifetime of the system. As transmission consumes significantly more power than reception for most Wireless applications, previous efforts have been focused on increasing the efficiency of RF power amplification. These efforts have resulted in large increases in transmit efficiencies with research-grade amplifier efficiencies approaching 100%. In this paper, they describe their efforts on reducing power consumption of reception and other small signal RF functions. Additionally, recent power efficiency measurements on InP HEMT devices for transmission are presented. This work focuses on the needs of today's typical portable Wireless systems, which operate at frequencies up to several GHz.

Desalination R and D: The New Federal Program

The purpose of the program is to determine the most technologically efficient and cost- effective means by which useable water can be produced from saline water or water otherwise impaired or contaminated. Currently, the cost of desalting seawater is 3 to 5 times the comparable cost of desalting brackish water, which is up to twice as expensive as the treatment and delivery of other municipal water supplies (not counting sewage-related costs). Funding for the new Desalination R&D Program is provided through Bureau of Reclamation's Office of Research in the Department of the Interior

Evaluation of COBRA for Use in Distributed Control Systems (open access)

Evaluation of COBRA for Use in Distributed Control Systems

The Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA)-based Simulator was a Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project that applied simulation techniques to explore critical questions about advanced distributed control system architectures. A three-prong approach comprised of a study of object-oriented distribution tools, computer network modeling, and simulation of key control system scenarios was used in the LDRD project. This input report describes the first of the three approaches Ñ the study of object-oriented distribution tools together with measurements, and predictions of use within the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and some aspects of CORBA which remain to be resolved. For the ICCS, the completeness of suitable functionality, the speed of performance and utilization of machine and network resources, and the developing nature of the commercial CORBA products themselves, presented a certain risk. This LDRD thus evaluated CORBA in general, and a particular implementation, to determine its features, performance, and scaling properties, and to optimize its use within the ICCS. Both UNIX and real-time operating systems were studied.

Hybrid Ray/Wave Optics for Laser-Plasma Interaction (open access)

Hybrid Ray/Wave Optics for Laser-Plasma Interaction

This aim of this FY 1998 LDRD project was to create a computational tool which bridges the gap between wave and ray optical regimes, important for application areas such as laser propagation in plasma and multimode photonics. We used phase space methods, where a set of rays distributed in a particular way in position and angle retain many essential features of wave optics. To characterize and enhance our understanding of the method, we developed a GUI-based photonics tool which can analyze light propagation in systems with a variety of axial and transverse refractive index distributions.

LDRD final report: photonic analog-to-digital converter (ADC) technology (open access)

LDRD final report: photonic analog-to-digital converter (ADC) technology

We report on an LDRD seed program of novel technology development (started by an FY98 Engineering Tech-base project) that will enable extremely high-fidelity analog-to-digital converters for a variety of national security missions. High speed (l0+ GS/s ), high precision (l0+ bits) ADC technology requires extremely short aperture times ({approx}1ps ) with very low jitter requirements (sub 10fs ). These fundamental requirements, along with other technological barriers, are difficult to realize with electronics: However, we outline here, a way to achieve these timing apertures using a novel multi-wavelength optoelectronic short-pulse optical source. Our approach uses an optoelectronic feedback scheme with high optical Q to produce an optical pulse train with ultra-low jitter ( sub 5fs) and high amplitude stability (<10{sup 10}). This approach requires low power and can be integrated into an optoelectronic integrated circuit to minimize the size. Under this seed program we have demonstrated that the optical feedback mechanism can be used to generate a high Q resonator. This has reduced the technical risk for further development, making it an attractive candidate for outside funding.
