Chemicals: UV-curable coating for aluminum can production (open access)

Chemicals: UV-curable coating for aluminum can production

Fact sheet on curing aluminum can coatings written for the NICE3 Program. Coors Brewing Company has been using ultraviolet (UV) light curing technology on its aluminum beverage cans for 25 years. The company is now looking to share its cost-saving technology with other aluminum can producers. Traditional curing methods for creating external decorations on cans rely on convective-heat ovens to cure ink and over-varnish coatings. These thermal-curing methods require large amounts of energy and money, and can have unintended environmental impacts. Coors' technique uses coating materials that cure when exposed to UV light, thereby eliminating the expensive heat treatments used by conventional coating methods. Additionally, the UV-coating process creates much lower emissions and a smaller pollution waste stream than rival thermal processes because it requires much less solvent than thermal processes. This technology can be used not only in the aluminum can industry, but in the automotive, airline, wood, paper, and plastics industries, as well.

The Circular RFQ Storage Ring. (open access)

The Circular RFQ Storage Ring.

This paper presents a novel idea of storage ring for the accumulation of intense beams of light and heavy ions at low energy. The new concept is a natural development of the combined features of conventional storage rings and ion traps, and is basically a linear RFQ bent on itself. The advantages are: smaller beam dimensions, higher beam intensity, and a more compact storage device.

Class 3 Tracking and Monitoring System Report (open access)

Class 3 Tracking and Monitoring System Report

The objective of Class 3 tracking system are to assist DOE in tracking and performance and progress of these projects and to capture the technical and financial information collected during the projects' monitoring phase. The captured information was used by DOE project managers and BDM-Oklahoma staff for project monitoring and evaluation, and technology transfer activities. The proposed tracking system used the Class Evaluation Executive Report (CLEVER), a relation database for storing and disseminating class project data; GeoGraphix, a geological and technical analysis and mapping software system; the Tertiary Oil Recovery Information System (TORIS) database; and MS-Project, a project management software system.

Coherent Coupling Criterion for Three-Dimensional Halo Formation (open access)

Coherent Coupling Criterion for Three-Dimensional Halo Formation

In this paper we study coupling between the transverse and longitudinal degrees-of-freedom in intense, rms mis-matched charged particle beams. We find that a coherent (2:1, i.e., parametric) resonance between the transverse and longitudinal mismatch eigenmodes has the effect that a transverse ''breathing mode'' mismatch can excite a longitudinal mismatch and halo. If the resonance condition is not satisfied we find practically no coupling. We compare results obtained with the 3D rms envelope equations in a uniform focusing channel with those obtained using large scale, 3D parallel Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations.

Collimator Systems for the SNS Ring. (open access)

Collimator Systems for the SNS Ring.

The requirements and performance goals for the collimators are to reduce the uncontrolled beam loss by 2 x 10{sup -4} absorb 2 kW of deposited heat, and minimize production and leakage of secondary radiation. In order to meet these requirements a self-shielding collimator configuration consisting of a layered structure was designed. The front layers (in the direction of the proton beam) are relatively transparent to the protons, and become progressively less transparent (blacker) with depth into the collimator. In addition, a high density (iron) shield is added around the outside. The protons will be stopped in the center of the collimator, and thus the bulk of the secondary particles are generated at this location. The conceptual design described, the method of analysis discussed, and preliminary performance parameters outlined.

The Commissioning Status of RHIC. (open access)

The Commissioning Status of RHIC.

The construction and commissioning status of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, RHIC. is discussed. Those novel features of a heavy ion Collider that are distinct from conventional hadron Colliders in general arc noted. These features are derived from the experimental requirements of operation with a variety of ion species over a wide energy range including collisions between ions of unequal energies. The paper notes other challenging issues for the Collider including intrabeam scattering, interaction-region error compensation, magnet alignments, and matched transition-energy jump. The project is in the final few months of a seven-year construction cycle and is entering the commissioning phase. A review of the superconducting magnet program is given together with the status of the machine construction and commissioning.
