Modelling, measurement and construction of the stripline kickers for the Tevatron transverse dampers (open access)

Modelling, measurement and construction of the stripline kickers for the Tevatron transverse dampers

In this paper, we will describe the modelling, measurement and construction of the stripline kickers for the Tevatron transverse dampers. We will show that the odd/even impedances calculated using Poisson gave very good results when compared to the measured odd/even impedances of a stripline prototype. Using the prototype, we will show how we had adjusted the launch impedance so that the reflection coefficient s11 < -35 dB between 0 to 100 MHz. We will also show the final design of the kickers and point out the deficiencies of this design.

Quantitative Analysis of Backlit Shadowgraphy as a Diagnostic of Hydrogen Ice Surface Quality in ICF Capsules

This document presents the Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) Description for the Superblock non-reactor nuclear facilities-Tritium Facility (Building 331), Plutonium Facility (Building 332), and Building 334--at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Building 332 is a Nuclear Hazard Category 2 facility, while Buildings 331 and 334 are Category 3 facilities in accordance with DOE STD-1027, DOE STD-3009, and DOE Order 5480.23. In implementing the Superblock ISMS Description, a graded approach is used--the Category 2 nuclear facility description provides more detail than those for the Category 3 nuclear facilities.

Design package test weights for fuel retrieval system (OCRWM) (open access)

Design package test weights for fuel retrieval system (OCRWM)

This is a design package that documents the development of test weights used in the Spent Nuclear Fuels subproject Fuel Retrieval System. The K Basins Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) project consists of the safe retrieval, preparation, and repackaging of the spent fuel stored at the K East (KE) and K West (KW) Basins for interim safe storage in the Canister Storage Building (CSB). Multi-Canister Overpack (MCO) scrap baskets and fuel baskets will be loaded and weighed under water. The equipment used to weigh the loaded fuel baskets requires daily calibration checks, using test weights traceable to National Institute of Standards Testing (NIST) standards. The test weights have been designated as OCRWM related in accordance with HNF-SD-SNF-RF'T-007 (McCormack).

Plutonium Finishing Plant (PFP) HVAC System Component Index

This document identities the components, design media, procedures and defines the critical characteristics of Commercial Grade Items necessary to ensure the HVAC system provides these functions. This document lists safety class (SC) and safety significant (SS) components for the Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) and specifies the critical characteristics for Commercial Grade Items (CGI), as required by HNF-PRO-268 and HNF-PRO-1819. These are the minimum specifications that the equipment must meet in order to properly perform its safety function. There may be several manufacturers or models that meet the critical characteristics for any one item.

Theoretical Study of Si and N Adsorption on the Si-terminated SiC (001) Surface (open access)

Theoretical Study of Si and N Adsorption on the Si-terminated SiC (001) Surface

We report the results of first principles molecular dynamics simulations of the adsorption of Si and N atoms on a Si-terminated p(2 x 1) SiC(001) surface. In particular, we discuss different structural models for the Si-rich (3 x 2) surface, and the adsorption of 1/8, 1/2 and 1 monolayer nitrogen on the p(2 x 1) surface. Our simulations show that a SiC(001)-p(2 x 1) surface covered by a nitrogen monolayer is an inert substrate which inhibits growth.

Environmental Compliance for Oil and Gas Exploration and Production (open access)

Environmental Compliance for Oil and Gas Exploration and Production

The Appalachian/Illinois Basin Directors is a group devoted to increasing communication among the state oil and gas regulatory agencies within the Appalachian and Illinois Basin producing region. The group is comprised of representatives from the oil and gas regulatory agencies from states in the basin (Attachment A). The directors met to discuss regulatory issues common to the area, organize workshops and seminars to meet the training needs of agencies dealing with the uniqueness of their producing region and perform other business pertinent to this area of oil and gas producing states. The emphasis of the coordinated work was a wide range of topics related to environmental compliance for natural gas and oil exploration and production.

Minimum-Time Trajectory Tracking of an Under-Actuated System (open access)

Minimum-Time Trajectory Tracking of an Under-Actuated System

Minimum-time trajectory tracking of an under-actuated mechanical system called the Acrobot is presented. The success of the controller is demonstrated by the fact that the tracking error is reduced by more than an order of magnitude when compared to the open-loop system response. The control law is obtained by linearizing the system about the nominal trajectory and applying differential dynamic programming to the resulting linear time-varying system, while using a weighted sum of the state-deviation and input-deviation as the cost function.

Inclusive jet production and subjets at the Tevatron (open access)

Inclusive jet production and subjets at the Tevatron

The D0 and CDF proton-antiproton collider experiments at the Tevatron accumulated large samples of high energy jet production data during Run I (1992- 1996). Presented here are measurements of the central inclusive jet cross section at center-of-mass energies of 1800 and 630 GeV (by the D0 and CDF experiments) and a forward ( |{eta}| < 1.5) inclusive cross section measurement by the D0 experiment at 1800 GeV. Cross sections are compared to next-to-leading order QCD predictions with recent parton distribution functions. Also included is a measure of subjet multiplicity in jets produced at 1800 GeV using a successive combination type of jet algorithm.

Stress Analysis of Laminated Composite Cylinders Under Non-Axisymmetric Loading (open access)

Stress Analysis of Laminated Composite Cylinders Under Non-Axisymmetric Loading

The use of thick-walled composite cylinders in structural applications has seen tremendous growth over the last decade. Applications include pressure vessels, flywheels, drive shafts, spoolable tubing, and production risers. In these applications, the geometry of a composite cylinder is axisymmetric but in many cases the applied loads are non-axisymmetric and more rigorous analytical tools are required for an accurate stress analysis. A closed-form solution is presented for determining the layer-by-layer stresses, strains, and displacements and first-ply failure in laminated composite cylinders subjected to non-axisymmetric loads. The applied loads include internal and external pressure, axial force, torque, axial bending moment, uniform temperature change, rotational velocity, and interference fits. The formulation is based on the theory of anisotropic elasticity and a state of generalized plane deformation along the axis of the composite cylinder. Parametric design trade studies can be easily and quickly computed using this closed-form solution. A computer program that was developed for performing the numerical calculations is described and results from specific case studies are presented.

Structural Models of Amorphous Carbon and its Surfaces by Tight-Binding Molecular Dynamics (open access)

Structural Models of Amorphous Carbon and its Surfaces by Tight-Binding Molecular Dynamics

We use liner-scaling tight-binding molecular dynamics to generate three structural models of bulk amorphous carbon with different atomic density. Amorphous carbon surfaces are then obtained by imposing tensile strain on these computer generated networks until fracture occurs. Our results show that for a given density, the formation energy of surfaces obtained with different tensile strains differ by only a few 10{sup -1} eV/atom and their structural properties are qualitatively similar. The presence of sp sites at the surface is observed at all densities, but with different values of the concentration. The surface thicknesses obtained in our simulations agree with experimental data. Furthermore we find that surface roughness increases with the amount of graphitic component in the bulk sample. The same trends of the macroscopic properties are obtained when using a two-center tight-binding Hamiltonian, an environmental dependent one, and first principles calculations.
