Design review report for the SY-101 RAPID mitigation system (open access)

Design review report for the SY-101 RAPID mitigation system

This report documents design reviews conducted of the SY-101 Respond And Pump In Days (RAPID) Mitigation System. As part of the SY-101 Surface-Level-Rise Remediation Project, the SY-101 WID Mitigation System will reduce the potential unacceptable consequences of crust growth in Tank 241-SY-101 (SY-101). Projections of the crust growth rate indicate that the waste level in the tank may reach the juncture of the primary and secondary confinement structures of the tank late in 1999. Because of this time constraint, many design activities are being conducted in parallel and design reviews were conducted for system adequacy as well as design implementation throughout the process. Design implementation, as used in this design review report, is the final component selection (e.g., which circuit breaker, valve, or thermocouple) that meets the approved design requirements, system design, and design and procurement specifications. Design implementation includes the necessary analysis, testing, verification, and qualification to demonstrate compliance with the system design and design requirements. Design implementation is outside the scope of this design review. The design activities performed prior to detailed design implementation (i.e., system mission requirements, functional design requirements, technical criteria, system conceptual design, and where design and build contracts were placed, the procurement specification) have …

Determination of worst case projected source term in tank 241-SY-102 (open access)

Determination of worst case projected source term in tank 241-SY-102

This document describes the methodology used to determine the worst case projected source term that could be in double-shell tank 241-SY-102 for the upcoming cross-site waste transfer. The worst case projected source term is given in Table 4-1 is the weighted average of the tank waste sources with the addition of sufficient waste from a defined worst source tank to fill the tank to 416 inches. The projected source term in this document is not intended to represent what will be in tank 241-SY-102. Rather, it is a conservative bounding composition considering that the volume of waste that will be added from each current source is unknown.

Diffusive Barrier and Getter Under Waste Packages VA Reference Design Feature Evaluations (open access)

Diffusive Barrier and Getter Under Waste Packages VA Reference Design Feature Evaluations

This technical document evaluates those aspects of the diffusive barrier and getter features which have the potential for enhancing the performance of the Viability Assessment Reference Design and are also directly related to the key attributes for the repository safety strategy of that design. The effects of advection, hydrodynamic dispersion, and diffusion on the radionuclide migration rates through the diffusive barrier were determined through the application of the one-dimensional, advection/dispersion/diffusion equation. The results showed that because advective flow described by the advection-dispersion equation dominates, the diffusive barrier feature alone would not be effective in retarding migration of radiocuclides. However, if the diffusive barrier were combined with one or more features that reduced the potential for advection, then transport of radionuclides would be dominated by diffusion and their migration from the EBS would be impeded. Apatite was chosen as the getter material used for this report. Two getter configurations were developed, Case 1 and Case 2. As in the evaluation of the diffusive barrier, the effects of advection, hydrodynamic dispersion, and diffusion on the migration of radionuclides through the getter are evaluated. However, in addition to these mechanisms, the one-dimensional advection/dispersion/diffusion model is modified to include the effect of sorption on …

Directional Ordering and Dynamics in Dusty Plasmas (open access)

Directional Ordering and Dynamics in Dusty Plasmas

We use molecular dynamics (MD) simulation methods to investigate dusty plasma crystal structure, with the grains subject to a spherically symmetric Debye-Hueckel potential, a uni-directional external potential and an asymmetric wake potential. The structure is studied as a function of Mach number and magnitude of the wake as well as the strength of the rf input power, using parameters from a self-consistent dust-sheath model.

Discontinuous Galerkin for Hyperbolic Systems with Stiff Relaxation (open access)

Discontinuous Galerkin for Hyperbolic Systems with Stiff Relaxation

A Discontinuous Galerkin method is applied to hyperbolic systems that contain stiff relaxation terms. We demonstrate that when the relaxation time is unresolved, the method is accurate in the sense that it accurately represents the system's Chapman-Enskog approximation. Results are presented for the hyperbolic heat equation and coupled radiation-hydrodynamics.

Drawing evaluation report for sampling equipment drawings (open access)

Drawing evaluation report for sampling equipment drawings

This document presents the results of a task to evaluate Tank Waste Remediation System (TWRS) sampling equipment drawings and identifies drawings category as either essential, support, or general drawings. This report completes the drawing evaluation task as outlined in Engineering Task Plan For Truck 3 and 4 Drawing Compliance and Evaluation (Wilson, 1997). The scope of this report is limited to an evaluation and identification of drawing category for drawings of certain tank waste sampling equipment for which the TRWS Characterization Project has been assigned custody, including: vapor sampling, grab sampling, auger sampling, and all core sampling equipment (see LMHC Task Order 304). This report does not address drawings for other waste tank deployed equipment systems having similar assigned custody, such as, Light Duty Utility Arm (LDUA), Cone Penetrometer system, or Long Length Contaminated Equipment (LLCE). The LDUA drawings are addressed in the Characterization Equipment Essential Drawings (HNF 1998). The Cone Penetrometer system drawings which are vendor drawings (not H- series) is not currently turned over to operations for deployment. The LLCE equipment was just recently assigned to Characterization Project and were not included in the original scope for this evaluation and will be addressed in the evaluation update scheduled …

Engineering report for project W-314 S/RID phase 1 assessment (open access)

Engineering report for project W-314 S/RID phase 1 assessment

This report provides the results of an assessment of project W-314 compliance with project-specific SIRIDs. This Phase 1 assessment has been subdivided into the following tasks. Task 1 collected reference materials needed to complete the SIRID assessment. The documents include reports from the TWRS procedure compliance system (ERMI) that list the SIRID requirements for TWRS in each functional area and the documents that TWRS identified as implementing each SIRID (Phase 1 of the TWRS assessment). Also included are documents that were identified during this assessment as implementing project W-314 SIRIDs. Task 2 evaluated the 16 TWRS program SIRID functional areas to identify areas that applied specifically to project W-314. The SIRIDs applicable to project W-314 were determined by evaluating each individual SIRID in each functional area against the scope of project W-314 from inception to the point at which it begins operation. The following project W-314 functional areas were then prioritized into three groups to allocate resources to the most critical items. Priority 1 SIRID functional areas contain requirements that pertain to activities done completely within the scope of project W-314 (engineering, quality assurance, and construction). Task 3 consisted of an assessment of each functional area, in priority sequence, to …
