Visualization and quantification of evolving datasets. Final report: 8-1-93 - 4-30-97

The material below is the final technical/progress report of the Laboratory for Visiometrics and Modeling (Vizlab) in visiometrics for the grant entitled Visualization and Quantification of Evolving Phenomena. This includes coordination with DOE supported scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), and with theoretical and computational physicists at the National Institute of Fusion Science (NIFS) in Nagoya, Japan and the Institute of Laser Engineering (ILE) in Osaka, Japan. The authors research areas included: Enhancement and distribution of the DAVID environment, this is a 2D visualization environment incorporating many advanced quantifications and diagnostics useful for prediction, understanding, and reduced model formation; Feature extraction, tracking and quantification of 3D time-dependent datasets of non-linear and turbulent simulations both compressible and incompressible. This work is applicable to all 3D time-varying simulations; Visiometrics in shock-interface interactions and mixing for the Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) environment. This work highlights reduced models for nonlinear evolutions and the role of density stratified interfaces (contact discontinuities) and has application to supernova physics, laser fusion and supersonic combustion. The collaborative projects included areas of (1) Feature extraction, tracking and quantification in 3D turbulence: compressible and incompressible; (2) Numerical Tokamak Project (NTP); (3) Data projection and reduced …

Water Pollution: Proposed Pretreatment Standards for Industrial Laundries

Correspondence issued by the General Accounting Office with an abstract that begins "Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the dispute between the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the industrial laundry industry regarding EPA's cost benefit analyses of its proposed pretreatment standards, focusing on: (1) EPA's implementation of the Unfunded Mandates Reform Act of 1995 (UMRA); (2) the significant differences between EPA's and the industry's cost estimates of this proposed regulation; (3) ascertaining how EPA estimated the benefits of the proposed rule and disclosed the uncertainties associated with the accuracy of its estimates; and (4) how EPA's analysis supports its belief that the agency has chosen the least costly, most cost-effective, or least burdensome regulatory alternative."

Wedge Prism for Direction Resolved Speckle Correlation Interferometry (open access)

Wedge Prism for Direction Resolved Speckle Correlation Interferometry

The role of a wedge prism for strain sign determination and enhancing the sensitivity for sub-fringe changes is emphasized. The design and incorporation aspects for in-plane sensitive interferometers have been described in detail. Some experimental results dealing with stress determination by laser annealing and speckle corelation interferometry are presented. The prism can also be applied to produce standardized carrier fringes in spatial phase shifting interferometry.

Well Installation and Sampling Report for Monitoring Wells TCM6 TCM7, and TNX 28D - 40D and GeoSiphon Cell TGSC-2 (open access)

Well Installation and Sampling Report for Monitoring Wells TCM6 TCM7, and TNX 28D - 40D and GeoSiphon Cell TGSC-2

The shallow groundwater and sediments beneath the TNX Area are contaminated with both dissolved and residual chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) such as trichloroethylene (TCE), carbon tetrachloride and perchloroethylene (PCE). The Savannah River Technology Center (SRTC) is studying a new technology for remediating CVOCs known as GeoSiphon.

Wind-Diesel Hybrid Systems for Russia's Northern Territories (open access)

Wind-Diesel Hybrid Systems for Russia's Northern Territories

This paper will summarize the DOE/Russian Ministry of Fuel and Energy (MF and E) activities in Russia's Northern Territories in the field of hybrid wind-diesel power systems over the last three years (1997-1999). The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) supplied technical assistance to the project, including resource assessment, system design, site identification, training and system monitoring. As a result, several wind-diesel systems have been installed and are operating in the Arkhangelsk/Murmansk regions and in Chukotka. NREL designed and provided sets of data acquisition equipment to monitor several of the first pilot wind-diesel systems. NREL's computer simulation models are being used for performance data analysis and optimizing of future system configurations.
